FROM SCRAP TO SCULPTURE: Chuck Reeves of Whitehall (left) and Mike Greening of Butte teamed up to create the sculpture "Draggin Steel," which won first place in the juried art show as part of the Whitehall Fall Arts & Crafts Festival. The sculpture weighs about 160 pounds and is made completely from scrap and salvaged steel. Reeves and Greening spent close to three months creating the sculpture. The two men have formed Greymour Frin, a business venture specializing in custom-made swords, arms, armor, and metal art.
COUNCIL STRUGGLES WITH SWIMMING POOL FIX: Pool repairs and costs mount, and no solution is in sight. A frustrated Whitehall Town Council, short of funds and ideas to repair the swimming pool, took no action and made no firm plans at the September 10 council meeting to move ahead with repairs to the community swimming pool.
The pool, closed all summer after leaks were discovered when it was filled earlier this summer, has seen fits and starts of work as town officials and community volunteers sought to get it up and running in a timely and affordable manner. As the summer wore on, the "timely" part of the fix-up goal was lost, and it appears the "affordable" portion of the repair goal is in jeopardy as well.
WHITEHALL ORGANIZATION OF THE WEEK: Chamber of Commerce. The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce receives special recognition this week for creating the first-ever Whitehall Fall Arts & Crafts Festival and for helping arrange the arrival of the "Special Livingston Excursion" passenger train. The Chamber, led by vice president Karen Mattern, helped showcase the town to hundreds of people on Sept. 8-9 and helped promote the Lewis & Clark murals (also a Chamber of Commerce project).
JEFFERSON VALLEY PRESENTS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: Eric Clements. Eric Clements, a WHS freshman, is our final JVP performer this year. Eric joined the JVP cast early, attended rehearsals regularly, portrayed Private Joseph Whitehouse, and delivered one of the play's more poignant narratives. Eric was also one of the JVP cast members who dressed in costume and delivered brief examples of play dialogue Sept. 8-9 when the tour train visited Whitehall.
WHITEHALL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Chad Housman. Chad Housman was the leading tackler for the Trojan football team against Absarokee with 15 tackles, and earns Athlete of the Week honors for his effort. Coach John Larsen said Chad "really stepped up" in the game, saved a touchdown, and played a strong, solid game. Chad, a junior, plays in the defensive secondary and as a wide receiver for the Trojans. He is the son of Dee Dee and Curt Housman.
