Katlynn Griffin, 71

Katlynn Griffin passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after a brief but valiant battle with ovarian adenocarcinoma. She loved all living things, especially animals. Her presence will be deeply missed.

Katlynn was born May 5, 1955, at Warner-Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. Her father’s Navy career led the family to Pensacola, Florida, where she lived through her teenage years. Her aunt and uncle’s farm was her “second home,” where she befriended all the cows, pigs, and chickens. Her uncle told her she had to eat a cow patty if she wanted to become a farmer.

Seeking something different than coastal Florida, Katlynn moved to Moscow, Idaho, in her late teens. She later enrolled at the University of Montana after moving to Missoula, earning a degree in 1981 in Recreation Resource Management from the U of M School of Forestry. The mountains of Montana became a passion of her life. Seeking career opportunities, Katlynn landed in Bozeman and began working for the US Forest Service on a trail crew.

She met a guy who took a shine to her after finally asking her to go for a hike after work when the two of them had been hiking all day. They spent the next 35 years together.

Her Forest Service work took her to White Sulphur Springs, where she became a trail crew foreman. She loved the hard work and being in her beloved mountains. The aches and pains of the work eventually made her realize her braun might not be so strong forever, so she began working for the Bureau of Land Management as a Fire Aviation Dispatcher.

Working in eastern Montana and living in western Montana led Katlynn to seek work closer to home. The Whitehall USPS was looking for a part-time rural route carrier, which sounded right up her alley. She loved the work and all the people she met, but best of all, she got to be outside. She retired in 2022 to spend more time with her animals at home and travel.

Katlynn and her husband, Paul, moved to Whitehall in 2000 after he landed a job at Montana Tech in Butte. It was Katlynn’s dream place where she could have horses, dogs, cats, goats, and other critters. She never met an animal she didn’t adore. Many animals adopted Katlynn as their surrogate mom, a job and title she relished.

Katlynn was preceded in death by her father, James Griffin, and stepfather, Bill Corner.

She is survived by her mother, Audrey Corner; stepmother Polly Griffin; sister Pat Sharp (Albeon); stepbrothers Marty Griffin and Mike Griffin (Beth); niece Lynn Sharp; nephew Jim Sharp (Kat); and her husband, Paul. Also surviving are their dogs, Carwyn and Brady, and their cats, BC, Hobo, and Leilah.

At Katlynn’s request, no services are planned, and cremation has taken place. Her desire is to have her ashes spread where her horses are buried, along with the ashes of all of her animals that she loved so very much.
