    Dear Editor: In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote in The American Crisis, "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country." Paine was describing those who are eager to stand up when times are easy, but disappear when real sacrifice is required.
