  • Dear Editor: My View on Abortion

    BOB SIMS|Oct 19, 2022

Dear Editor, In last week’s Whitehall Ledger, I read that Ruth Lott respectfully disagreed with my position on a woman’s right to choose. I was shocked. I did not think this was possible since I have never articulated my position on this subject (see the previous Letter to the Editor). But since Ruth brought it up, I will try to outline my position here. I am conflicted about a woman’s right to choose an abortion. I do not think it is right to force a woman to give birth if she does not want to. I have seen enough births to conclude that givin...

  • Dear Editor: Attend the Candidate Forum

    BOB SIMS|Oct 12, 2022

Dear Editor, A government of, by, and for the people only works when the people put forth enough effort to select people that have the skills, ability, and desire to operate a government of, by, and for the people. We, the people, have not done a real good job of doing this in recent years. Ask yourself how many people in the elected office you would hire to run your business, sort cows, or even go to the store for you. However, the fact that your perfect candidate is not on the ballot does not relieve you of your duty to vote for the best...

  • Dear Editor: Animal Shelter

    BOB SIMS|Jun 15, 2022

Dear Editor, Now that the Animal Shelter mill levy has been voted down for the second time by a margin ten times larger than it was voted down the first time, it is time for the County Commissioners to take action. They should sit down with the Sheriff, people from ALL the animal shelters in the County, people from the Butte and Helena animal shelters, the local veterinarians, and anyone else who wants to help and figure out (1) what the County’s animal shelter needs really are and (2) how they can best be addressed in a reasonable fashion. T...

  • Dear Editor: Candidate Forum May 26

    BOB SIMS|May 18, 2022

Dear Editor, We citizens have not done a stellar job in selecting our elected “leaders” in recent years. Most of us vote but few of us make sufficient effort to gain enough knowledge that we can make a truly informed selection. Those that make an effort to develop adequate knowledge are handicapped by the lack of available information. What information is available is filtered by the media and often biased. Add to this the misinformation coming at us from many sources and making a truly informed decision is very difficult. We cannot tot...

  • Dear Editor: How many times do we need to say NO?

    BOB SIMS|Feb 9, 2022

Dear Editor, I am glad we have people in Jefferson County that are willing to spend their time and effort working with stray and unwanted animals. Many people donate funds to” not for profits” that do this work and I hope they continue. Based on what was reported in the Boulder Monitor on February 2, 2022, our County Commission is planning to place on the ballot a levy to fund a” not for profit” to the tune of $265,365 per year for the services the County is currently getting for almost no cost. This levy will pay $6634 dollars for each of...

  • Dear Editor: Jefferson County Needs to Rethink Stimulus

    Bob Sims|May 19, 2021

Dear Editor, Jefferson County expects to get $2.4 million as part of the Covid-19 federal government spending program. Our County Commission is developing a plan on how to spend these monies. Their efforts, to date, appear to require some serious, thoughtful input. It appears the folks planning how to spend (or is it invest?) this windfall have overlooked where this money is really coming from. It is being stolen from our kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. How anyone can justify spending this stolen money to improve our current standard of...

  • Letter to the Editor: Predator Conflicts???

    Bob Sims|Dec 14, 2016

The Missouri Headwaters Partnership, a group made up of the 9 watershed councils in the area, has been contacted by a group, the Blackfoot Challenge, wanting to “help” us reduce conflict with grizzly bears, wolves and other large predators. Most of this kind of “help” is really designed to get taxpayer funded grants for the individuals leading the effort with solving any problem with landowner or grass roots involvement being the bait to get the money. That may or may not be the case here. I have found over the years that it is better to have...
