Persephone, Lilith, and Phantasia. Poor little girls! The first two names weren't so bad; they could be condensed to Percy and Lily (thought Percy sounded a bit boyish.) But Phantasia? What could possibly be done with that? Phanty? Fanny? Tase? Tasia? Not much better! The Houseman girls really didn't have any choice. Their mother was of Greek heritage, while their father was, of all things, an Askenazi Jew of Belarussian descent. The world into which these particular girls were born, 1840s New...

There’s a decent chance that you exist simply because your parent's friends started having kids and your parents didn’t want to feel left out. The fact that women’s sense of smell is significantly better than men’s is a troubling thought for any man trying to covertly sneak a fart out on a date... you can never be certain that you’ve won the gamble. Hollywood puts prosthetics on beautiful actors to make them look ugly because they refuse to make ugly actors famous. People who are trying to accomplish something, like eradicating Malaria,...

The Bill Baycroft & Bob Casagrande Memorial Rod Run, held Saturday, July 23 in Legion Park, brought in dozens of classic cars and trucks to Frontier Days. Al Johnson, the Rod Run coordinator, would like to thank all the participants for making the trip to the event, as well as the registration help from Jake Hart, Frank Padrotti, and Ed Curran. Thanks also go to the event sponsors: Al's Mobile Glass, Mountain West Car Quest, Whitehall Drug, Danny Johnson, Mike Tilleo Graphics, Veremier...

July 23, 1997 Whitehall’s biggest weekend of the year, the tandem events of Frontier Days and the Whitehall All-Class Reunion was planned for July 25-27. Close to 600 WHS alumni and hundreds more rodeo fans, parade lovers, craft shoppers, and interested residents and tourists were anticipated to make it one of the most memorable in Whitehall history. Lightning touched off two small fires west of Whitehall Sunday evening. One lightning strike set a single tree afire on land administered by the Bureau of Land Management, near Whiskey Gulch, n...

August is always the month we take off from programming after summer reading so the August calendar will be lighter than normal. There will still be Story Time and book discussion groups along with a few other programs. The staff will spend August planning the Fall Programming schedule, cleaning the stacks, and getting ready for our crazy September to start up. I will be attending the Montana Library Convention which will be a great time to learn new things about just about every aspect of the...

If you haven’t spent time considering what your healthcare needs will be in the years or even decades from now, you’re not alone. Recent research suggests that many aging Americans aren’t aware of the full range of options available to them. As we age, our healthcare needs intensify, and experts say that the U.S. healthcare system will need to embrace home healthcare options to meet the demand of an aging population. The new national survey, titled “Aging in Place: Assessing Senior’s Understanding of Home Healthcare Options,” conducted b...

TeleSystem Services (TSS) of Whitehall is starting to receive equipment for the expansion of the Fiber-to-the-Home project they installed along First Street in 2017. Jason is shown unloading the first of about five spools of underground conduit to bury along the second street in Whitehall and several cross streets intersecting the area. Fiber will be installed along North Jefferson and Division Streets and the length of Second Street from McKay to Noble Streets. The installation of the conduits...

Milltown State Park began as a river restoration superfund and has grown into so much more! Located just outside of Bonner, MT, this park offers over 3 miles of beautiful trails. Abundant outdoor opportunities and a rich cultural heritage converge at the newly restored confluence of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers at the heart of Milltown State Park. The former site of a Superfund river restoration project, Milltown State Park, features more than 500 acres of terrain, ranging from restored...
Annette Choszczyk lives in rural western Colorado these days, but when she was a kid, the Highline Canal in Denver was her summer paradise. “To us, it was river and a playground, complete with rope swings, swimming holes, crawdads and a trail alongside it that adults and kids could walk on to the foothills or far out into the prairie.” They always called it a ditch, this 71-mile-long canal that carried water all over Denver. Throughout the West, thousands of ditches that snake for miles through semi-arid country are nothing less than bel...
You're wondering what an Antbear is? It's an aardvark, an African animal that eats ants. I recently had Biniam an African buddy of mine visit. He was very shocked that we had a car, because he was told that everyone in Montana had a horse and no electricity. He was right that we still had an outhouse and no shower. Having no shower make him feel at home, because in Africa all they have is a river to-do most of everything. He was concerned that we did not need a safety person when doing whatever in the river, couldn't believe there was no...
Frederich Charles Blumenfeldt was born to Frederich and Florence Blumenfeldt, German immigrants who had settled on Makee Ridge in the area of what would become Waukon, Iowa. The town itself would not be incorporated as such for several decades. So Fred, as he was known, born in the fall of 1846, did not technically grow up in Waukon, though he probably knew its environs better than anyone! Along with the famous Shattuck family, the Blumenfeldts were among the first white settlers who dared venture into this region of the brand new state of...

July Part 2 July 1896 offered a lot of storms, locally and across the nation. There was dissent in the Democratic party on who to nominate for President, storms in South Dakota and Nebraska killed livestock and ruined crops, a war in Cuba with Spain was showing heavy losses for the Spanish, and gold reserves here in the U.S. were growing as banks made good on their treasury promises. The following news items are taken from the July 17, 24 and 31, 1896 editions of the Jefferson Valley Zephyr....

Bill Hildebrandt creates mosaic-like pictures from pieces of wood - a cardinal, hummingbird, elk, koala bears - using a process known as intarsia, but with Bill's individual twists. He uses imagination and artistry, but describes himself as more of a technologist, using skills from his past, and his passion for math, science, and god in his creations. Though most of his pieces have been given as gifts, Bill is rethinking his cottage industry business plan with a specific goal. Bill came to...

Marbella and Dinae Washington were, respectively, both the daughters of a mixed-race couple from Panora, Iowa, in what has now been designated a Guthrie County Historical Village. Just a hundred feet or so from the Middle Racoon River, the Washington girls were both born water babies, even though Dinae was adopted by the Washingtons just before her fifth birthday. Even though Marbella was a couple of years older, Dinae soon all but surpassed her sister with her readiness to the water! Grover...

July 16, 1997 The Whitehall Town Council approved spending an additional $9,300 on the water improvement project to replace two old water lines that broke on July 7 and July 9. The two old cast iron water lines, one behind the Town Hall and the other at Legion Avenue and Railroad Street, ruptured when the new water tank began to fill and increased pressure throughout the town’s water distribution system. The Bureau of Land Management was working on a habitat project in the Toll Mountain area about 13 miles west of Whitehall. Most of the s...

The Ruby Valley Medical Center welcomes Amy Braaksma, APRN, FNP-BC, to its team of healthcare providers. Amy is a Nurse Practitioner seeing patients in our Twin Bridges clinic Monday through Thursday. Preferring a smaller work environment and rural healthcare, Amy accepted the Nurse Practitioner position at Ruby Valley Medical Center after three years at the Bozeman Clinic. Although she commutes every day from Churchill, Amy feels she has a better quality of life working in a small, rural...
