Not unlike others, Sandie Metcalf came into herself as an artist late in life, after she retired. It was then, painting on furniture in her Montana Cowgirl Ranchy style, that she attracted clients to her unique furniture pieces. After 40 years of not painting she discovered that she did have talent – quite a bit of it. Though she grew up thinking she'd like to be an artist, growing up on a ranch between two small towns in central Montana and attending a tiny school, left her unprepared for M...

Steakhouse fans eagerly anticipate digging into the savory cuts of sizzling beef waiters serve up. The precursor to that portion of the meal is often a wedge salad, which offers a crisp complement to the richness of the steak. Wedge salads are traditionally made with iceberg lettuce and drizzled with a flavorful dressing and often blue cheese. However, there are no set rules when it comes to wedge salads. With this recipe for Watermelon Wedge Steakhouse Salad, courtesy of the National...

This photo would have been a somewhat familiar scene in 1942 Kansas. However, this was not Kansas, though it was 1942. On the small New Jersey farmstead of Don and Lois Hottinger, the harvest was better than usual. The spring rains (not too much)and the summer heat (not too hot) had worked together to provide Lois and Don with the biggest and best harvest they’d seen with their own eyes. Lois had heard tell of her great-grandparents, the Oglethorpes, bringing in over 50 bushels per acre. That h...

All of the planets will be up in the night sky from the 16th of June at 4:35 AM through the 27th of June at 4:40 AM. When all the planets rise they will create an arc across the Eastern sky from 91 degrees on the 16th to 107 degrees on the 27th. The last time this happened was about 100 years ago and won’t happen again until 2041. On the 24th the planets will be visited by the waning crescent Moon halfway between Venus and Mars. The hardest planet to spot is Mercury because it stays low on the horizon and has a low magnitude. However, on the 2...

In 1896, just like today, people were looking forward to the official start of summer. Nationally, headlines included the fire that destroyed Hope, Idaho; the first session of the 53rd Congress concluded with only 50 members present and fighting between members from Texas and California; a building collapse in San Francisco kills five. Locally, flooding is a concern. The following are taken as written from the June 19 and 26, 1896 editions of the Jefferson Valley Zephyr. The accompanying photo...

The Task Force, created in 1995, was funded through a metal mines tax and was designed to find approaches to improve...

Babies are born every day. In fact, 249 were born in Butte at St. James Healthcare just last year. Over 200 births and over 200 different birth stories. Even twins have slight variances in their entrances. Every mother has a birth story to share, but before they ever begin the labor process, a lot of thought, planning, and preparations go into that very moment. Different women want different things and sometimes her baby, her body, and her circumstances can impact the way her birth story takes shape. Having options is important, and now, the...

While Jefferson County has thankfully not experienced the historic flooding that neighboring counties have, their struggles are a sobering reminder to act now to prepare for flooding. Jefferson County has many areas that are vulnerable to this threat. The first step is to purchase flood insurance. Federal assistance to private property owners due to flooding impacts is extremely rare, and even when it is provided, it usually is never enough to restore the property to its pre-flood condition. Next, purchase sandbags and sand and have a way to...
Hunters interested in signing up for licenses or permits left over from the special license and permit drawing can do so from June 20 through July 20. This new process for the sale of surplus licenses began in 2020 in response to issues in years past. The old process was vulnerable to long lag times, confusion and a perception of inequity for those unable to use the first-come, first-served online option starting at 5 AM. Hunters can sign up for leftover licenses and permits that were not distributed by the drawing through MyFWP on the FWP...

This is a three-meat soup that is sometimes a once and a lifetime event. When I was a kid, we were able to have it because there was a lion and tiger that escaped from the zoo. We should have stayed inside the house like the news said, but my grandpa used us as bait. He told us to go play outside as he was hanging out the window with his gun. The lion and tiger did not get shot by my grandpa, but by our buddy John down the street. John did not want the meat to go to waste, so he called my...

Ever wonder what porters did when they weren't working on the Underground Railroad, helping southern blacks migrate to safer climates in the North? In 1921, the Union persevered and slavery was officially a thing of the past. However, Ohio, as did many of the so-called "border-states," still ran an Underground Railroad of sorts; it had long since emerged into the open air of a newly reunited country. These porters, while their work was not as dangerous as that carried on by the likes of Harriet...
