New courses benefit Whitehall students

Whitehall High School students are now able to benefit from value added courses recently made available.

According to WHS Principal Hannah Nieskens, some of the options include dual credit courses with Highlands College of Montana Tech and Microsoft certification courses.

Nieskens said with the new additions to WHS coursework, college bound students have the opportunity to complete college credits while in high school.

"This can result in thousands of dollars in savings at the college level and a jump start at college for our students. For our career bound students, Microsoft certification could be the distinguishing factor that results in them being selected for hire over another candidate in the job market," she said.

The courses are already having a positive impact at the school.

"This fall was the first time we offered this course. We were able to take the official certification exam on January 11th at Highlands College in Butte. Six students passed the Microsoft Word portion of the test on the first try," WHS Business/Computer teacher Julie Kieckbusch said. "Passing this certification test is a big accomplishment and not many pass on the first try, so I am happy with how the students were able to focus and earn their certification."

Bryn Welker, Braden Shook, Iris Heimberg, Gage Bilbeisi, Andrew Simon and Sam Kraha were the six students who passed the test on the first attempt.

MICROSOFT CERTFICATION

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification validates mastery of Microsoft Office skills that are valuable demonstrating productivity in a wide range of jobs and other life pursuits. Earning MOS certification proves the ability to use Office applications for on the job needs and provides valuable distinction to help students enter higher education or the workforce. Earning an MTA certification is recommended but not required to pursue higher technology certifications. This will be a semester course.
