Whitehall students excel at State Music Festival

Whitehall High School band and choir students proved they are among the best in Montana at last week's State Music Festival in Helena.

Whitehall had a total of three students finish with Superior ratings. Senior Alexys Mercer received a Superior rating for her tenor sax solo. Kendra Klapan and Ashlynn Ellison both received superior ratings for their flute solos.

"State Music was a lot of fun, not only did the students do well, we got to hear some incredible performances from schools around the state as well," musical director Janet Heilig said.

Whitehall also received six Excellent ratings at the festival. Those receiving the rating were Mercer (vocal solo), Hannah Tebay (vocal solo), Maggie Whitehurst (vocal solo, clarinet solo) and Austin Schwab (tuba solo). Maggie and Katie Whitehurst earned the excellent rating for their duet. The Women's Ensemble also received an excellent rating. Members of the ensemble are Issie Coleman, Bailee Hess, Anna Nelson, Hope Shockley, Tebay, Mercer, Maggie Whitehurst and Katie Whitehurst.

"So proud of these students' efforts and the way the represented our school at state," Heilig said.
