Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
The Whitehall Garden Club held its first official meeting of Fall this past Wednesday, October 2nd, in the Borden Conference Room located at 103 W. Legion. Our hostesses this month were Kathy Ross and Barbara Lien. With a theme of "Hayrides and Apple Harvest," attendees enjoyed a delicious repast of curry chicken salad croissant sandwiches, apple cobbler with whipped cream, link sausages, mulled cider, hot cocoa, and fresh fruit.
The business meeting was called to order at 10 AM by President Kathy Ross. Then, the Treasurer's report and a roll-call of committees followed.
Highlights included scheduling of the Garden Club's Fall Clean-up of the Blue and Gold Star Memorials and the Native Plant Gardens located at Silver Water Tower Park on Wednesday, October 9th, beginning at 10 AM. If you'd like to join us for what is forecasted to be a pleasant fall day and some fresh air, grab your garden snips and gloves, and join us.
The Garden Club also wrapped up its Pie-by-the-Slice and Pie Auction, which was held during the Fall Festival on September 21st. This is always a successful fund-raiser for the Club, but with the proceeds from the Pie Auction, we were also able to assist six other non-profit organizations within our community. Proceeds of $377 were distributed to the Whitehall Senior Center, 4 Paws Animal Rescue in Cardwell, Gold Junction, TOPS, Jefferson Valley EMS & the Whitehall Ambulance Barn, and Liberty Place.
Laura Horn presented our educational program on "Seed Exchanges," the fundamentals of organizing a seed exchange, and the benefits. Also discussed was the importance of Seed Libraries', where seeds are made available to "borrow" by community members. There was also a brief program on ground covers, as fall is the optimum time for plants to take advantage of warm soil temperatures, encouraging root growth and weed and erosion control benefits.
