Roy Mulligan, representing the Jefferson Valley Museum, presented the WBA with a check for $250 to help fund the Whitehall promotional sign along I-90. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Headwaters Resource Area initiated an emergency closure to m...

Jefferson County Public Health is moving to automated COVID-19 contact tracing beginning Wednesday, June 1, 2022. We are moving away from universal contact tracing and will now send SMS text messages to positive COVID-19 individuals in our county. Automated contact tracing allows our staff to provide a quick, efficient, and more streamlined process of providing information to our residents. This system also empowers the public to act when they suspect a COVID-19 infection. These text messages...
What were some of the national headlines in late May 1896? Some are similar to today: Twisters in the mid-west, election irregularities in Alabama, the U.S. House delaying any decisions on immigration measures, people campaigning for seats in Washington, D.C. But here in the Jefferson Valley, people were busy building businesses and agriculture for the next generation. The following are taken as written from the May 22 and 29, 1896 editions of the Jefferson Valley Zephyr. The photo is an ad that appeared in the paper during that time....

After more than a decade with Whitehall Public Transportation (WPT) and Liberty Place, Paula Hippert will bid farewell to her career on June 30, 2022, and begin to focus on retirement. Kind of. "I'll still be here, just on the peripheral - I'll help out, but I'm not the boss anymore," Hippert said with a laugh. "Plus that's the end of our fiscal year, so Teresa [Oyama] is going to need some help!" Hippert is a much appreciated and vital part of Whitehall Public Transportation operations and...

Margaritas are wildly popular cocktails that can be enjoyed in standard and frozen varieties. Typically made with tequila and lime juice, margaritas lend a tropical flair to most any occasion and are the ideal accompaniment to Latin-inspired cuisine. Although margaritas commonly are consumed poolside or seen as warm-weather beverages, National Margarita Day falls during the month of February when the weather is chilly for many people. Perhaps sipping a margarita can evoke the coming days of...

On the morning of May 14, Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members of the Gallatin Composite Squadron traveled to Whitehall Montana to assist with traffic control during the town's first 5K Fun Run. During the run, eight cadets (members between the ages of 12 and 21) and three senior members (members 21 and older) used teamwork and radio communication to help direct runners, safely stop traffic if needed, and provide information to drivers on the activity. CAP set up an informational recruiting booth and...

Public Health is many things. It is clean air and water, safe schools, mental health, emergency preparedness, disease surveillance, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. The work of public health is achieved by preventing illness and injury and promoting wellness through healthy behaviors. Public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations can be as small as a neighborhood or as large as an entire region. It is our vision at Jefferson County Health...

The Clancy Days celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, 2022. Clancy will be celebrating this annual community event, with the theme this year of "Proving Up!" Each year, the Clancy community invites everyone to help celebrate the history of the area with food, music, contests, a parade, presentations, and vendors. Clancy, founded in 1864, was a mining, ranching, and agricultural area. Trains between Butte and Helena made stops in Clancy, as well as nearby Alhambra, to bring visitors...

One would think that things were a lot different back in 1896, and in many ways they were. But, some things were much like today. In May 1896, headlines included destructive tornadoes in Kansas, a fire in a Colorado town that left at least 2000 people homeless, high-profile murder trials, and trouble in the Middle East. Locally, the Jefferson Valley Zephyr stories reflect, to some extent, the happenings of the country. The following are taken as written (with some content excluded) from the Zephyr. WAS CRUEL MURDER: On Friday, probably, a...

Beginning in early May, Whitehall can expect to see Amy Martin at the corner of Legion and Division Streets, Thursday through Saturday, her SUV filled with spring veggies and garden plants, ready for planting. Early tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, asparagus, strawberries, and more, each small pot representing years of perfecting regenerative gardening at Covenant Gardens, a demonstration of what true local food and local farm health can look like. There, Tim and Amy Martin have created a place...

Wow! All I can think is just how incredibly powerful the We Are HER Community is. On May 5 and 6, We Are HER had our biggest fundraiser of the year - Give Big Gallatin Valley. During Give Big, we set the goal of raising $10,000 in 24 hours, which would be enough to cover 50 percent of our annual operating budget. At first, $10,000 seemed attainable. Last year, during Give Big, we had set out to raise $5,000 and ended up with just over $8,000. This year, we had four amazing local businesses...

I have spent nearly 20 years guiding anglers on Montana rivers and streams in Southwest Montana. After 10 years as a guide, I became an outfitter in 2015 and have been operating my small business ever since. Montana, and its waters, are treasures. My livelihood, like other fly fishing guides, is dependent on clean, cold, and plentiful water in our rivers to protect habitat. It’s also dependent on the access that Montana’s prized stream access law ensures that distinguishes our state from other states. I am concerned by a proposed ballot mea...
Last week a relative of mine was visiting from Australia. She is my grandfather's third cousin's adopted sister's friend's next-door mate, in Montana hunting jackalopes and snipe. She had pretty good luck with the first but got skunked before I loaned her a sniper rifle. And a bath in tomato juice and baking soda. But I digress. She brung us a recipe for a down-under treat, kangaroo barbecue stew, extra fun because it rhymes. I like rhymes. On the other hand, we ain't got none of them here, but we've all got barbies, as the Aussies say, so...

I used to adore hard edges and corners. My favorite things growing up were edgy. I played with wooden building blocks for hours. Oh sure, I had a frivolous fling with Play-Doh. But my true love was Legos. Art? Picasso’s The Three Musicians still seems to “jiggle” every molecule in the room. Craps is my favorite casino game. I love rolling them bones. And I find the tinkling sound ice cubes make when splashed with Wild Turkey enchanting. But then I grew long in the tooth. As my metabolic rate...

James Robert Bennet III was born into it, one might say! Making a grand entry into this world in late June of 1883, the 23rd, to be precise, Jim-Bob emerged into this life in the local physician's office in little Dorchester, an unincorporated town in Allamakee County, near the Minnesota border. Jim-Bob's parents, James II and Elisha Bennet were among about 50 other inhabitants of the small farming area. James the Second was a pensioner from the Mine, drawing a decent $16 a month. Because of the...
On those days when home cooks are searching the cupboards and refrigerator for some culinary inspiration, they need look no further than the egg carton. Often relegated to breakfast time, eggs can be the main ingredient or star of meals at any time of the day. In fact, they’re a common component of quiches, frittatas, and souffles. People may have mixed feelings about eggs because the nutritional debate surrounding eggs seems ever-changing. It was once thought that eggs had to be avoided due to concerns about cholesterol. But many experts now s...
This week the Friends of the Library will be meeting on Thursday, May 12, at 5 PM at the Library. This great group of people helps in a variety of different areas concerning the different library projects. Besides helping staff with the day-to-day tasks of processing books, shelving, working the desk, etc. they also fundraise by running the book sale, writing grants for special programs and projects, and overseeing special events such as the Christmas Stroll and Volunteer Tea. This is a wonderful way to meet new people if you have just moved to...

In the merry, merry month of May, the Whitehall Garden Club started their meeting with a delectable breakfast table including a deeply delicious deep dish sausage egg bake (say that 3 times) and fresh-baked date-raisin and pineapple bread. The table sprinkled with Butterfingers and black licorice was too irresistible to skip. Thanks to Janet Chapman and John Carlson for setting the mood for the upcoming meeting with well-fed WGC members and guests! The meeting was called to order by President...
We are very excited about this year’s performance, for a couple of reasons. First, though it was a fun experience playing outside on the green last year, we are looking forward to the energy and atmosphere of the theater again. Secondly, we are trying something completely different this year. Our shows are typically a music performance with a mix of original songs and some covers. But this year we are producing a live radio drama - somewhere between an old-time radio show and Garrison Keillor’s “Prairie Home Companion.” Everyone was a little...
May 1, 1997 Trojan Educator of the Week was Mike Welsh, a PE instructor at WHS. Mr. Welch, who has been with the district for three years, was nominated for his excellent PE and weights programs, as well as relating well with students. Mr. Welch enjoys weightlifting, hunting and fishing. He and his wife have two children, ages 16 and 12. Trojan Student of the Week was Candy Raisor, a freshman at WHS. She was nominated because of her caring, cooperative attitude and for doing more classroom work than necessary. Candy is the daughter of John Rais...
