Fisheries staff at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are seeking comments on a proposal to construct a fish barrier on Reservoir Creek near Dillon. This project would help protect a genetically pure population of westslope cutthroat trout from non-native trout. Reservoir creek is one of eight streams within the Beaverhead watershed that still supports an unaltered westslope cutthroat trout population. However, the population is only seasonally protected from non-native trout downstream. This proposal includes constructing a wooden barrier that wou...

On the heels of a December which brought exceptional moisture to the Treasure State, January largely lacked needed precipitation. Monthly Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) SNOTEL site totals across Montana show that January precipitation was below to near normal. “The first week of the month looked promising. The mountains received at least one to two feet of snow, but westerly flow brought high pressure during the last three weeks in January,” said NRCS Hydrologist Eric Larson. This made for clear skies, warmer than normal tem...

Before even getting the trout, you need to get your explosive license. It is hard to do, just like getting the cops off your back for the moonshine you have been making, but you need it to buy dynamite. First thing is going through background checks, which you know uncle Bob would not pass in a thousand years. Lying a lot will improve your chances. Then to take a class that anyone can pass with one eye closed. After all that, you need to find a provider of dynamite that will kill fish and not destroy the boat you are in. This detail may...

Established in 2009, this combination wildlife management area and state park feature wonderful and wild views. The site includes an undeveloped 14-mile stretch of the Marias River, as well as sagebrush grassland and short grass prairie habitats in the uplands. When FWP bought the land, officials believed an existing road on the east side of the WMA would provide access to the river and interior of the state park. However, an adjacent landowner disputed FWP plans and stated that the road was...

Last Thursday we had a truly extraordinary program as Cindy Buscarow shared her family's Holocaust history with a full audience. There was silence as she spoke of her family's attempt to rescue her grandparents and great-grandparents, followed by their realization that they could not escape. They were fully aware of what was happening to the German Jews in 1943 and what their fate would be. Cindy shared heart-breaking letters as they said goodbye to their children and wished them the best. It wa...
