  • Whitehall Indivisible: 20 Lessons on Tyranny

    SUE PULLMAN, Whitehall Indivisible|Sep 24, 2025

The Thursday, September 18th meeting of Whitehall Indivisible started out with a short video “Twenty Lessons on Tyranny” by Timothy Snyder, read by John Lithgow. Here is the link if you would like to watch it: https://bit.ly/46FCShJ. Never in my lifetime have these lessons been so prescient. The group discussed several other topics: • Another “Nicaraguan Drug Boat” was blown out of the water in the Caribbean by the US military killing three; no process, no evidence, in international waters, • more hoops to jump through for Land and Water Conse...

  • Whitehall Indivisible Denounces Political Violence

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehall Indivisible|Sep 17, 2025

The meetings of Whitehall Indivisible (WI) often have point and counterpoint conversations, where we don’t all agree or have not heard the same version of a news story. In those instances, we put the topic on hold for a week, do some research, and revisit the same topic the following week. WI had several holdovers in this category from the previous week: the cessation of the vaccine mandate in Florida, the debate over culling the herd versus achieving herd immunity, and Texas HB 7, which extends the reach of penalties beyond the Texas border f...

  • Whitehall Study Commission Final Report Finalizes Study Commission

    Whitehall Study Commission|Sep 17, 2025

On June 4, 2024, the citizens of Whitehall voted to conduct a study of the Whitehall government. The ballot stated that the purpose of this commission was to investigate the town’s government to identify areas for improvement. On November 5, 2024, Jim Buterbaugh was the only volunteer to place his name on the General Election ballot to join the study commission. Mayor Janacaro-Hensleigh then appointed two additional citizens (Rhea Armstrong and Tiffany McCue) to the group, as well as a town council member (Linda Jung - Ward 2) to serve as ex o...

  • Wortman Appointed to Powell Commission

LUKE ULATOWSKI and AUBREE BOHRER, Silver State Post|Sep 17, 2025

The Powell County Commission hired Leonard Wortman, a three-year Garrison resident and a former Jefferson County commissioner of 19 years, nearly on the spot, to the District 3 seat the day of Wortman’s interview on September 1. Former District 3 Commissioner Dwight Bacon, who was elected last year, resigned, effective July 18. Because no county election will take place this year, it was left up to the Powell County Republican Central Committee, helmed by Terry Jennings, to put forth three candidates for the commission to choose between. A...

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehall Indivisible|Sep 10, 2025

Whitehall Indivisible (WI) is now meeting on Thursdays for the months of September, October, and November, and we will arrange our speakers accordingly whenever possible. The group discussed the Raging Grannies, monthly ukulele lessons in Butte, and Coursera free online courses, specifically “Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Explained.” With winter fast approaching, maybe a free online course or ukulele lessons is a good idea. On September 10, Jeff Mangan and the Transparent Election Initiative will present at 6 PM in the Copper Lounge of the Stud...

  • Whitehall Indivisible: Scheduling Updates

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehall Indivisible|Aug 13, 2025

Just when we thought we had a calm August, two new Wednesday events appeared! On August 13 we will not hold our regular meeting so we can attend “The Real Yellowstone” at the Star Theater at 7 PM. On August 20 we will have a regular meeting at 6 PM, and then on August 27 we will be hosting The League of Women Voters (LWV), who will present their “Suffrage Timeline.” We hope parents and teachers will attend the August 27th presentation by the League of Women Voters. HB 591 went into effect in July, creating Freedom Week in public schools...

  • Jefferson County Resident Challenges Bertoglio's Appointment

    ANDRES HALADAY, Upper Seven Law|Aug 13, 2025

On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Jefferson County resident Jordan Williams challenged Governor Greg Gianforte’s appointment of Representative Marta Bertoglio as Director of the Montana Department of Commerce. At the time of her appointment, Bertoglio was a sitting member of the Montana legislature, representing Montana House District 75 (“HD 75”). The Montana State Constitution explicitly prohibits appointing sitting legislators to public office. Article V, Section 9 provides that “No member of the legislature shall, during the term for which h...

  • New Medicaid Federal Work Requirements Mean Less Leeway for States

KATHERYN HOUGHTON and BRIAN SABLE-SMITH, KFF Health News|Aug 13, 2025

When President Donald Trump signed a law adding work requirements for some Medicaid recipients, he may have undercut lawmakers in at least 14 states who were designing their own plans, according to health industry observers. Georgia is the only state with a work requirement in place for Medicaid, but several states have been pursuing such a policy for years, only to be blocked by courts or, most recently, the Biden administration. Some seek state-specific touches to the new rules. Others aim to implement work requirements before the federal...

  • Whitehall Indivisible: Three Montana Issues

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehall Indivisible|Aug 6, 2025

Whitehall Indivisible's final presentation in July was by the irrepressible retired attorney, Betsy Brandborg, of the nonprofit Friends of the Third Branch (friendsofthethirdbranch.org). Betsy's energy was the impetus of the nonprofit group, and the experience she gained during her 26 years as the first General and Ethics Counsel at the State Bar of Montana informs her work today. With an entertaining, irreverent, and enlightening firehose of a presentation, Betsy tried to bring us up to speed...

  • The Transparent Election Initiative: New Amendment Uses Corporate Law to Ban Political Spending

    JEFF MANGAN, Transparent Election Initiative|Aug 6, 2025

The Transparent Election Initiative, a Montana organization, released the public draft of a historic constitutional amendment that takes direct aim at Citizens United—and the corporate and dark money it unleashed into Montana’s politics. The amendment will be officially filed with the Montana Secretary of State’s office on Friday, August 1. The 1,000-word amendment takes an innovative new approach by using Montana’s corporate chartering authority to no longer grant its corporations and similar entities the power to use money to influence candid...

    DAVID LEPESKA, The Monitor|Aug 6, 2025

Former Whitehall School Board Trustee Mark Reinschmidt has been rather busy since the County Commission last week named him Montana's new representative for House District 75. "My life has already changed dramatically," the 60-year-old father of five told The Monitor in an email interview. "My schedule is filling up fast and I find myself answering phone calls and emails constantly." Setting aside his longstanding career as an artist, designer, and craftsman working in lighting, furniture, and...
