Several local residents have reported a recent help wanted ad in the Whitehall Ledger turned out to be too good to be true. The ad in question had run in the two previous editions of the Whitehall Ledger Classified Section, and was seeking a caregiver for five hours a day, Monday through Friday. A recall election for five Town of Whitehall officials will not move forward. Last Friday, Seventh Judicial District Judge Katherine M. Bidegaray ruled in favor of an order granting second amended application for injunctive relief filed by Mayor Dale Davis, and Council Members Vincent Keogh, Gary Housman, Tom Jenkin and Joe Adams. The Whitehall Town Council approved a resolution Monday night to increase cemetery fees. The measure passed 5-0 to increase the fees to $125 for weekday cremation burials, and $150 for weekend and holidays. The fee for casket burials will now be $250 for weekdays, and $350 for weekend and holidays. Tabled from last months meeting, the Council discussed modifying charges for solid waste services. There are currently two drilling projects underway at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine near Whitehall. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee last week, Mine General Manager Dan Banghart said they have been active on the exploration front, with two drilling projects in the Apex area. There were some anxious moments last Friday morning for students, parents, and Whitehall School Officials. According to Whitehall Superintendent of Schools John Sullivan, the school was notified before the start of school that one of their busses had caught fire. Sullivan said they were informed of the fire by parents who had seen the bus, and also through being in communication with the bus radio. The Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department responded to three fires over the holiday weekend. According to Fire Chief Jeremy Ward, the first fire the department responded to was Thanksgiving night at La Casa Trailer Park No. 2 in Whitehall. Ward said they were paged at 6:20 p.m., and had seven fire fighters and five trucks at the fire. Last July, a herbicide was placed in the Jefferson Slough in an attempt to knockout Eurasian watermilfoil prior to a planned relocation of the Slough. This became necessary after the Department of Revenue reached a last minute deal with Northwestern Energy to resolve some assessment issues. We requested the DOR recertify all of our values for this year. We were able to absorb most of the change by reducing some of our cash reserves. The first case of influenza in a Jefferson County resident was confirmed last week. The adult was not hospitalized but did seek medical care for the illness. Influenza (“the flu”) is a highly contagious illness that is often recognized by its sudden onset of fever, cough, body aches, and fatigue.
