GEORGIA, I have a question, It’s summer - hotter than ever - but I have to have a humidifier going in our living room for health reasons. I recently had a friend and her 11-year-old son over. He wanted to watch a movie, so we popped one on and his mom and I went to talk in the kitchen. About an hour later, we returned to the living room - it smelled really weird in there, and I have a very sensitive sense of smell. As it smelled a bit like urine, I wondered if my cats had peed in there, but they were all hiding because of my visitors. It really...
It is true “work” is a four-letter word; however, the nature and design of work is God orchestrated and valuable for life. Is it just me, or has our society begun to lose sight of the importance of a good work ethic? In part, yes! Could this be attributed to the “entitlement” generation that has slowly developed, where individuals demand support? Another factor could be that throughout history, affluent nations tend to create this type of scenario, abundance and luxury lend to comfortable excess. When this occurs, underwork becomes normati...

Dear Editor, Thank you for the cartoon on the "Readers Speak" page of the August 13th Ledger, the caption of which read "Exemptions for school vaccines are at an all-time high... I don't know who they are, but you sure can spot 'em." I, too, celebrate the rising number of people seeking and winning exemptions from school vaccinations. I see that as a very healthy trend. And I agree that it is easy to spot the children who are not getting vaccinations. Having been schooled as a scientist and...

The average Facebook user probably knows “Never Gonna Give You Up” for a different reason than other Internet users. Since dwarven women have beards, Gimli would have thought that Galadriel would be even hotter if she had a beard. There is a non-zero chance humans may have already gone back in time to keep humanity from suffering worse historical and current events than we already have, and this is actually the brightest timeline. You never see a traffic jam from behind you. All for-profit industries try to attract new customers, but the tob...
For generations, Montana voters have been famously averse to the notion of a statewide sales tax, repeatedly rebuffing efforts by political leaders to persuade them that one would be good medicine for the state’s public finances. But ask Todd O’Hair, the leader of the state’s most prominent business association, and he’ll tell you a changing economy means it’s time for thoughtful Montanans to take a deep breath and ponder swallowing that pill. O’Hair, the president and CEO of the Montana Chamber of Commerce, has made that case in a recent seri...
GEORGIA, I have a question, My husband (51 M) and I (53F) have been married for over 25 years. I started getting tattoos three years ago, and I currently have 7. They all hold sentimental meaning for me (one is my late mother’s birth flower, another is a lighthouse in honor of my grandmother, etc.). Most of the tattoos are on my arms, and all can be covered if/when needed. My husband has complained each time I’ve gotten a tattoo - to him, they are a waste of money (my money - not from our joint account), they're ugly, I have too many of the...
Living in rural communities all my life, and especially in Montana, I’ve grown to love the sky that is often breathtaking. There is something special about driving in the dark of night and noticing just beyond the horizon bright lights of one of the “larger” cities. In perfect weather conditions, there are many nights here in Whitehall where a person can see the glowing lights of Butte, mixed with the array of stars. Jesus used a familiar description, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasone...
ARIES Mar 21/Apr 20 You are likely to experience a week full of thoughtfulness and introspection, Aries. You are searching for a new source for self-fulfillment, and may be inspired by another’s ideas. TAURUS Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, now is the time to identify your priorities. Figure out what you want or would prefer to do before you start taking any steps forward. This is the only way to get satisfaction. GEMINI May 22/Jun 21 Prepare for a week that will pose some challenges, Gemini. A last-minute project at work may test your mettle. CANCER J...
In a recent article in the June 9th edition of The Montana Standard, Justin Allport, interim executive director of the Montana Democratic Party, claimed that ”under Republican leadership, prices continue to climb for just about everything.” That claim is blatantly false. The real problem is the relentless growth of government, out-of-control spending, programs with little oversight, and layers of regulation built on decades of government policy supported by both Democratic lawmakers and so-called Republicans who have chosen to side with tho...
If you were to skin yourself, it would be very easy to tell where your veins are. People are so eager to misunderstand each other these days that we can no longer simply say what we mean; we also have to say what we don’t mean if we don’t feel like overly clarifying ourselves after people are already offended. There is no standard depiction for what a phantom looks like. Batman and Superman should just swap cities for a week. They would take care of each other’s villains in no time. People imagine other people are thinking about them more...

Dear Editor, As the 2025 Montana Property Tax Rebate application period opens, Representative Ken Walsh (HD 69) is available to assist constituents with questions, eligibility, and the application process. "If you own and reside in your home here in House District 69, you may qualify for up to $400 back on your property taxes," said Walsh. "I want to ensure every eligible resident has the support they need to access this rebate." Residents are encouraged to reach out directly for help...

Dear Editor, I was under the belief that Whitehall Transportation was here to assist those who live in our small community; to take people shopping, get to appointments, etc. I believe when it originally started, that was the goal. When did all that change? When did charging elderly people $75 to go to a doctor's appointment in Butte happen? Most of the people who need this service are on a fixed income, so how is charging $75 fair at all? I remember when Whitehall Transportation would go to,...
GEORGIA, I have a question, My wife and I are expecting our first child. She is seven months along, and we had an ultrasound yesterday to check on the progress of the baby. During the appointment, the tech was pointing out our daughter’s different body parts, telling us where the legs and feet are, etc. It was the first time we didn’t really need the help, because we could see our baby looking like a real baby! My wife started crying, and I was comforting her, when she said, “I can’t believe I’m making a human being!” I kept comforting...
ARIES Mar 21/Apr 20 This week, you are unstoppable, Aries. Your confidence will be shining brightly for all to see, and the right people are bound to take notice. Expect to tackle some projects. TAURUS Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, small comforts will bring big happiness to you this week. Plus, your natural charm will draw others in. A surprise in your home life will make your heart soar. Enjoy the moments. GEMINI May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, your words will be magical this week, whether you're pitching ideas or chatting with friends. There's not much you...
As Christians, we share doctrinal views that include core Biblical truths, such as salvation through Christ by repentance. Then there are secondary teachings that we can hold varying degrees of thought on, such as the method of water baptism or the timing of the rapture, which are not salvation issues. One subject that is often debated or possibly neglected includes the Christian and being part of a local faith community or the church. I’ve often said, “You can be a Christian and not go to church.” A person can repent of their sin and choos...
What is it about top executives in monopoly utilities that makes them want to play cowboy capitalists? Case in point is NorthWestern Energy’s plan to provide power to gigantic data centers. With great ballyhoo across the state, NorthWestern Energy announced it signed a “letter of intent” to provide as much as 1,000 megawatts of electricity to Quantica Infrastructure for its proposed data center. That’s more than their current total electric load of 760 megawatts. That amount of power would use all of NorthWestern’s existing generatio...
A bass singer who can whistle has an insane natural range compared to most animals. Being a kid is the free trial, while adulthood is the overpriced subscription. Somewhere out there, there’s a stranger whose bathroom schedule matches yours down to the minute. Instead of slowly raising the heat to cook frogs in a pot, you could just cover the pot with a lid. There are people out there you haven’t met yet who will love you. A true food challenge would be eating a large quantity of food that the challenger doesn’t like. Your cat/dog proba...
History has always been a great teacher. We can either learn lessons from history or fail to listen to history. In our modern age, I believe there is a tendency among Christians to somehow hold a view that we are morally above early Jewish believers. For example, when reading about Moses and the Israelites during the period when the 10 Commandments were given, many today think, “How could the Israelites be so blind to their idolatry?” The worship of golden calves is blatantly obvious as an idol. There is danger in picking apart the Isr...
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Try to get the whole picture before you proceed, Aries; otherwise, you may be moving along blindly, and that can make matters worse. Patience is a valuable asset right now. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, sometimes a major conflict ends when one party walks away and finds something better to occupy them. Identify the source of your frustration and then decide if it’s worth it to proceed. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 You can seemingly energize the people around you, Gemini. They will flock to you for inspiration this week, and y...
Kissing booboos is one of the most basic examples of the placebo effect at work. Superman must go to sleep every night hearing the cries of people begging for his help. There’s probably a lot of money that will never be spent in the USA simply because it is comprised of $2 bills that people save because they’re uncommon and interesting. The default position of the toilet seat could indicate whether it’s the wife or the husband who holds power inside the house. The Tour de France should have a second competition where they get electric pedal...

Dear Community and Editor, Whitehall Community - if you missed the BROTHERS GRIMM SPECTACULATHON you missed a great performance! This play was absolutely DELIGHTFUL!!! CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved in the production! You made my night and rocked this production! Coming from the perspective of someone who was there for almost every rehearsal, and all the funny parts were no longer funny anymore, seeing it come altogether was fantastic! The actors were phenomenal -you would never have...
GEORGIA, I have a question, About three months ago, I purchased a $300 BBQ grill at Home Depot. I needed to rent a truck for $20 to haul the grill to my house. As I was processing the paperwork, the salesman went and grabbed a new assembled unit for me. After 20 minutes, the paperwork was processed, and I met the salesman at the front of the store, where he loaded the grill onto the flatbed. I tipped him and his coworker, then drove home. After unloading the grill, I returned the truck and enjoyed a grilled meal that evening. About three weeks...
Has your family walked through the dynamics of settling a late relative’s estate? Neither my wife nor I have experienced this yet, as our parents are still living, for which we are grateful. Over the years, I’ve known other families who have gone through some very difficult circumstances settling estate matters, all the daunting legal details, and sadly, unhealthy expectations within the family where possessions are contested. I’m reminded of the parable Jesus discussed in Luke 15, which is often referred to as the parable of the prodi...
