NOVEMBER is Diabetes Awareness Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the estimated percentage of adults 18 years and older who are undiagnosed is 27.6%, representing 11 million people.

Diabetes awareness saves lives: Understanding diabetes, recognizing the warning signs, and taking steps to manage blood sugar can help prevent serious complications and improve quality of life.

What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body regulates blood glucose (sugar). It occurs when the body does not make enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively.

Know the warning signs:

• Excessive thirst and frequent urination

• Feeling unusually tired

• Increased hunger

• Blurred vision

• Unexplained weight loss

• Cuts or wounds that heal slowly

• Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. (Type 2 diabetes may develop without obvious symptoms, so regular screening is important.)

Types of diabetes:

Type 1: An autoimmune condition in which the body produces little or no insulin.

Type 2: The body does not use insulin effectively or cannot produce enough.

Gestational diabetes: Diabetes that develops during pregnancy.

Prediabetes: A condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, signaling a high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

Rare and specialized types: These have various causes (i.e. inherited, slow progression, pancreatic damage, caused by other diseases, etc.)

How can we prevent or manage diabetes?

• Eat balanced meals

• Choose vegetables, whole grains, fiber-rich foods, and appropriate portions. Avoid pre-made, processed foods.

• Stay physically active

• Aim for regular movement, such as walking, cycling, or swimming.

• Check your blood sugar

• Follow recommended screening and monitoring plans, especially if you have risk factors.

• Get regular checkups

Early diagnosis and proper treatment can reduce the risk of complications.
