  • Spring Is Coming Too Soon

PEPPER TRAIL, Writers on the Range|Feb 23, 2022

Ah, what a beautiful day! The air has that magical quality it sometimes gets in spring, a caressing softness on the skin. The buds on the plum trees are swelling, and the robins have ascended to the tops of the trees, where they’re singing with abandon. But… it is February. Today’s high temperature was 72 degrees, almost 20 degrees higher than normal and a new record. At this time of year, the mountains surrounding my southern Oregon valley should be deep in snow. The high country lakes should be full, but frozen. The sky should be gray and,...

  • Helena Man Sentenced for Poaching Trophy Moose

MORGAN E. JACOBSEN, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks|Feb 23, 2022

A Helena man received a lifetime ban from hunting and trapping in Montana as part of his sentence for illegally killing a trophy moose east of Townsend in 2019. Shiloh Berry, 41, was sentenced Friday in Broadwater County District Court after pleading guilty last fall to unlawful possession of a game animal, hunting without a valid license and waste of a game animal. In addition to the lifetime ban from hunting and trapping, Berry's sentence includes a three-year suspension of fishing...

  • Fish Hawk Campground Temporarily Closed Due to Misuse

BRITTANY JONES, Montana Bureau of Reclamation|Feb 23, 2022

Fish Hawk Campground at Canyon Ferry Reservoir is closed until further notice. Reclamation issued a press release in October 2021 after continued misuse occurred at the campground last summer and fall. Large amounts of garbage were recently dumped at Fish Hawk Campground and visitors have continually left behind trash that led to the decision to temporarily close the site. Reclamation is proud to manage Canyon Ferry’s public federal lands, that belong to the American people, and exist for the benefit of all, and will release another notice w...

  • FWP to Begin Work on New Elk Management Plan

    Feb 23, 2022

During the recent hunting season-setting process, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks heard from people across the state with opinions and ideas about the challenges facing elk management in Montana. As FWP embarks on developing a new elk management plan, staff are looking at ways to address those challenges. “We heard from so many people during our season setting process and many of them had good ideas,” said FWP director Hank Worsech. “We are now looking at ways to look at those ideas and see what can help us address some of the challenges we face...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Cousin Cleavon's Bobcat Jerky

    COUSIN CLEAVON|Feb 23, 2022

In my opinion, bobcat is one of the hardest animals to get but satisfies the most indiscriminate tastes. You can either use hounds to track the cat down or use a trap to get him by his foot. When using hounds, all you do is let them out of the truck and drink all the beer you want until you hear them dogs go crazy. The one problem with hounds is that they can leave the hide all holey. That means you will not be able to make that sexy bobcat rug for your wife for Valentine's Day. As for...

  • Homo What?

Toford Kroshus, Montana Man of Mystery|Feb 23, 2022

A Fire Marshal decided to ignite a large bucket of gasoline to burn the built-up soot in his chimney. His fireplace was cold. He stopped sliding the sloshing bucket of gasoline across the hearth when his favorite polyester disco suit, the powder blue one with wide lapels, flash-melted. A lit cigar stub dangled between his blistered lips. His body’s defense mechanisms mitigated shock, fought infection, and accelerated the healing process. He survived. His pension plan and disability benefits e...

  • Creating Fiction from History: 2/23/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Feb 23, 2022

Ella Jean Berry was born October 4, 1905, to Franklin and Rosalind Berry, of Dubuque, Iowa. Both of her parents perished at an early age in a horrible train wreck. This unthinkable tragedy occurred the first day of Spring the year that little Ella turned five. Leaving Ella with her nurse, the Berry's had boarded the Rock Island train which ran from Cedar Rapids to Waterloo, on a business/pleasure trip. Unfortunately for Ella, she never saw her parents again, as the train, a combination of two...
