Hannah Catalino and Lisanne Fear are currently making their way across the United States, plotting their course for this Fall's upcoming "5000 Miles, 5000 Mustangs" on the American Discovery Trail. The two left on Tuesday, April 13 in order to determine whether they were to take the northern or southern route of the Trail and prep their horses for what lies ahead. With their pack of dogs (Kayuh, Zaphyra, and Keiko) they began their 7000-mile road trip to determine the safest 5000 miles of...

  • Budget Resolution A Start on Money Misappropriation at Town

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Apr 14, 2021

It has been a rough Spring for the Town of Whitehall, with much scrutiny by the townspeople in regard to the misappropriation of earmarked funds being discovered earlier this year after. However, a budget resolution brought to the public and the Town Council for approval on April 12th should start to alleviate the money confusion. “The money was never “gone”,” Allissa Christensen, Town Clerk & Treasurer, stressed. “It was just put into the wrong accounts and used for the wrong items.” The Town has made it very clear that no one stole the money...

  • Editorial: Assumptions Are No Good For Anyone

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Apr 14, 2021

My editorial this week is in response to the letter below, commenting on my previous editorial from two weeks ago “Holy Cow, Slow Down!” As the author of the letter to the Editor did not sign their note, I can only address it here, in public. We all know what they say about assuming, and there are many assumptions in her letter. I also made my own assumptions in my previous editorial. She assumed I was talking about ALL semi drivers; I assumed readers would understand I was talking about vehicles speeding who need to slow down. If her hus...

  • Dear Editor: Wife of a Truck Driver and Damn Proud of It

    Unknown|Apr 14, 2021

Dear Editor, This letter is in response to an article written by you in your newspaper regarding “all the big trucks speeding down past your office.” I am a wife of a truck driver. You have no idea how many hours and miles a truck driver drives so that you can have a lot of the necessities that you require in life. They are some of the ones that worked non-stop during the COVID pandemic so that everyone had what they needed to live. They were not working from home, they were out in the public working every day and night to deliver products to...

  • Dear Editor: Keep the Skatepark Clean

    Stephanie Burtch Vinson|Apr 14, 2021

Dear Editor, After a trip up to Ringing Rocks with my three small children and some friends last Saturday, we decided to drive into Whitehall for a frosty treat from the KFC/A&W. After getting our treats in the drive-through, we made our way over to the town skate park and gazebo to let the kids eat their ice cream and run off their wiggles before our trip home to Dillon. I was shocked to see how much trash was laying on the ground in the park! There were pieces of push brooms, a broom head on the roof of the gazebo, innumerable bottles, cans,...

  • Name to a Face: Lonna Johnson "Wizard with the Scissors"

    Kristine Erinn, Contributing Writer|Apr 14, 2021

Lonna Johnson was born in Butte, but was raised in Whitehall. As far as she knows, she was in the first kindergarten class to be held at the Whitehall schools, making her an original Trojan! She grew up in the Whitehall school system, graduating in 1988. After graduation, she took odd jobs cleaning houses, as well as working at A&W for a year. She hadn't known what she had wanted to do with her life, but her Aunt lived in Great Falls told her that a hairstylist would always have a job no matter...

  • Go Ask Jo: 4/14/2021

    Jo|Apr 14, 2021

Dear Jo, Can you please advise me on a family situation? I recently moved to Montana in order to be closer to my aunt. She is a remarkable woman whom I love and respect. Her son, my cousin, recently moved back to Montana also. I enjoy time together with both. However, every time I go out to eat with them, he hits on the waitress. Now this may not seem like such a bad thing, but seriously, it is so bad that certain restaurants send men to the table to take our order his reputation is so bad. It is not funny, but is embarrassing and makes the...

  • Whitehall/Cardwell Based We Are HER Helps Thousands

    Apr 14, 2021

"I just remembered thinking of my parents and how they must have felt thinking they might lose both of their children," said Stevie Croisant, founder of the local nonprofit We Are HER (Healed, Empowered, Restored). "First, it was a real possibility that my brother wouldn't come home from Afghanistan. But then it became clear that they might lose me to domestic violence." We Are HER helps survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault heal after trauma. The organization was founded after...

  • Connecting Point: Truth in an Obscure World

    Bill Lanes|Apr 14, 2021

A danger we may not have taken seriously enough, a danger that has grown throughout the present generation and now may be in clearer view, is that objective truth has been canceled. The effects of Cancel Culture are raging all around us; we see this in the daily news. Are we seeing the process of a disaster? Perhaps we in the church have been too fearful to sound a constant alarm. I’m proposing a simple platform, striking up honest, personable, and intellectual discussions. Dialoging is something we should all strive towards. Faith and c...

Greetings Trojan Community! If you have a third, fourth, or fifth grader this year, you have probably heard them talking about the SBAC tests (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) this week. We began our testing on Tuesday, and this assessment will last through the rest of this week. We will then take a week off and resume testing on the following week. These tests provide a very clear picture of what our students have learned this year as well as the areas towards which we need to focus more instruction. I often refer to these assessments...

  • Flynn Closes Out Cross Country Career Happy

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Apr 14, 2021

"Just before the race the emotion set in as I realized that this was the last cross country race I would ever run as a Blue Hawk. There were tears in my eyes as I stepped up to the line knowing that I had given everything I had to the sport of cross country for 8 years now," Hunter Flynn said, happily recalling this past weekend's National Cross County Meet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Flynn, a Whitehall alumni who took the Trojan cross country team by storm during his years in Whitehall, brought his...

Pam Hanna RN, Jefferson County Public Health Supervisor|Apr 14, 2021

In late 2020, the first COVID-19 vaccines were approved for use in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On December 23, 2020, Jefferson County Health Department received its first allotment on Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. We were overjoyed! There was cheering and singing and a few tears of relief. Those hundred doses of vaccine felt like hope. They felt like hope because up until then our only defense against a virus that had changed the course of our daily lives were non-pharmaceutical interventions...

  • Kilns, Kilns & More Kilns at Jefferson County Museum

    Melody Pesta, Jefferson County Museum|Apr 14, 2021

“Kilns, Kilns, and More Kilns: Remnants of Western Industry” is the newest exhibit at the Jefferson County Museum. This exhibit features images of an historical remnant critical to the nineteenth century mining industry in the Western states—the stone or brick kiln. These large ovens allowed materials to be heated to high temperatures under controlled conditions. Most photographs show old kilns that transformed wood into charcoal, an important fuel which produced high temperatures needed for smelting raw ores during the frontier era. These...

  • Our Town 100+ Years Ago: 4/14/2021

    Arlene Weber, Jefferson Valley Museum|Apr 14, 2021

The following is taken from the Whitehall Zephyr, April 5, 1895, as it was written. The accompanying ad is also from that edition. Sam Wade has bought the restaurant property, on the corner opposite Fergus' store, and will soon make extensive improvements thereon. Sam is "our kind of people" – full of enterprise and vim. If appearances and sounds do not deceive us there are many bluebirds, robins, meadowlarks and nightingales putting in an appearance; in view of the recent spells of weather, how...

  • Ledger: Looking Back 25 Years

    Catherine Ellerton, Contributing Writer|Apr 14, 2021

Greg and DeAndra Parks of Whitehall have been chosen by the Jefferson Valley Habitat for Humanity (JVHFH) as the second family to receive a Habitat for Humanity home. The first home, built for and with Bill and Margaret Carhuff, was completed in December. Although the announcement of their selection is great news for the Parks family, Greg and DeDe know that it means they face some hard work ahead. Every “partner” family chosen to receive a home must contribute at least 500 hours of “sweat equity” for the Humanity program. That did not come as...
