Dear Editor, What is a Living Constitution? Since I have become politically involved (thanks to my youngest daughter), I have occasionally heard references to the Constitution as a living document. I have always regarded the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. What our great country was based on, and without it, the United States would just be another kingdom or worse. And of course, the only way to understand something is to learn about it. After many hours of researching the concept...

Dear Editor, I'm announcing my intention to seek reelection to Montana's House District 69. Serving this district has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I'm proud of the work we've accomplished together-from strengthening water policy, protecting our health care system, supporting public education, enhancing conservation measures and infrastructure, to ensuring fiscal responsibility and advocating for rural communities. While the election season is still months away, my focus...

ARTICLE CLARIFICATION: In the 9/3/2025 Whitehall Ledger it was stated that Shirley Baustian has four books she has illustrated. The Whitehall Ledger was incorrect - Baustian’s first two books were illustrated by Patsy Jensen; the remaining books were illustrated by Baustian herself. We apologize for any confusion....
The most common hairstyle is bald. AI would be less creepy if it talked like a robot instead of mimicking natural human speech. Humans feel bad when they see animals hurt, generations of evolution alongside companion species encoded empathy for animals possessing traits closer to domestic species in our psychology. Every new credit card expiration date feels like a lifetime away. But before you know it, some kind-faced barista says your card has failed. September 1899. There were celebrations for Montana troops coming home from the Philippines and sad news of people passing away from age, illness or by their own hand. Smallpox cases were reported in Kalispell and Great Falls and the Townsend boys from Waterloo reported on their experience with helping smallpox victims while they were in Valparaiso, Indiana. In Sparkhill, New York, four children died at an orphanage when fire destroyed nine of the ten buildings. In Chicago, nine workers died...

The September Whitehall Garden Club meeting, held at the EMS building, began with a historic "continental" brunch, brought in by Jayne Dean and Ann Palmer, honoring Our Founding Fathers' accomplishment of signing the newly written Constitution on September 17, 1787. We wondered what our Founding Fathers' favorite breakfasts were, so after some research, we discovered that GW loved hoecakes, JA had hard cider with each meal, and TJ enjoyed more of a "continental" style breakfast with muffins, a k...
It is rare that we at the Whitehall Community Library have the opportunity to prevent a tragedy from happening before it occurs. People say, “If only I had known,” or “What could I have done to help?” On Friday, September 26, from 1 PM to 2:30 PM, everyone will have a chance to learn the signs of someone who is contemplating suicide and what to do about it. The library is hosting a free QPR Suicide Prevention training. If you would like to attend, please call the Whitehall Community Library at 287-3763 to sign up. The Jefferson County Health...

Whitehall Indivisible (WI) is now meeting on Thursdays for the months of September, October, and November, and we will arrange our speakers accordingly whenever possible. The group discussed the Raging Grannies, monthly ukulele lessons in Butte, and Coursera free online courses, specifically “Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Explained.” With winter fast approaching, maybe a free online course or ukulele lessons is a good idea. On September 10, Jeff Mangan and the Transparent Election Initiative will present at 6 PM in the Copper Lounge of the Stud...
Part of my job as a Grand Canyon educator is picking up items that hikers drop or leave behind along the trail. Some of the things I’ve found this summer lead me to wonder, "What in the John Muir?" they were thinking. A fast-food burger, in the original wrapper. I suppose they left it for the timid woodland creatures, except if fast food isn’t good for us, why would critters want it? Someone’s last remains. When a hiker pointed out a shiny object off the trail, I clambered over rocks to find a sealed urn of cremains, which is illegal to leave i...
Governor Greg Gianforte announced the opening of the fourth annual Governor’s Youth Hunting Story Contest and is now accepting submissions from Montana youth and apprentice hunters ages 10 to 17. “For the past three years, young hunters across Montana have shared incredible stories that celebrate our hunting heritage and love of the outdoors,” Gov. Gianforte said. “As this year’s contest opens, I encourage all youth and apprentice hunters to take part and share their story.” To enter the contest, hunters must submit a story of no more than 500...

Montana has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. As a psychiatrist and Medical Director at AWARE, I witness firsthand how this crisis affects families, communities, and entire generations. There are unique factors that make suicide especially pressing here: our vast geography, the isolation that many Montanans experience, limited access to behavioral health resources, and a high rate of firearm ownership. These challenges are compounded by stigma around seeking mental health support...

As a growing number of schools across Montana consider switching to a four-day school week, a researcher at Montana State University and her colleagues are investigating the effects of such a change on children. Among other topics, MSU's Emily Tomayko and her collaborators have examined questions related to the impact of a four-day school week on adolescent health behaviors; physical education and obesity; and food security. They have also researched early elementary achievement and high school...

Many occasions call for cake as a centerpiece dessert. Whether you're celebrating a birthday or holiday celebration, having a go-to cake recipe on hand can ensure that guests get a slice of dessert that truly treats their palates. The good news is that homemade cake is easier than you would think to whip up. "Classic White Cake with Tuxedo Frosting" from "Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy" (Sourcebooks) by Jane Kartes is a traditional cake recipe with plenty of wow factor. The tuxedo frosting is a...
GEORGIA, I have a question, My girlfriend (30F) hates clothes. To the point where she has actively researched nudist colonies, and if it wasn’t for having to occasionally go into the office, she would have moved there long before she met me (33M). She’s always naked around the house. Which, for me, is really nice and not a big deal - she has a rockin’ bod. The issue is her two-year-old dog. The dog is a super cute and fluffy Great Pyrenees, very well trained, and huge. My girlfriend was there when her friend brought the heavily pregnant mom h...

Generally, our assumption regarding “justice” is linked to societal wrongs, and while that may be true in some cases. Please allow me to broaden the scope with a Biblical foundation. Throughout the Bible, justice is often closely tied to love, which involves demonstrating kindness and mercy to others. One of the most prominent texts in the scriptures is Luke 10, where Jesus uses the Parable of the Good Samaritan to make a direct point: Christians who claim to love God should demonstrate love in action towards anyone they encounter. His...
