Donald Trump has once again proven he’s not just the worst president in American history — he’s the weakest. His latest stunt? Threatening to punish networks and revoke broadcast licenses because Jimmy Kimmel dared to tell a joke. Comedy. Satire. Free speech. The very things that built America. But to Trump, apparently, they are weapons of oppression… unless you’re worshiping him on cue. Let’s get real: Trump didn’t just sulk — he crossed a constitutional line. The Supreme Court is clear: government officials can persuade, they cannot coerce....

Dear Editor, What in the name of God has happened to us? Are we so blind that we cannot see? Are we so deaf that we cannot hear? Are we so dumb that we cannot understand? Are we so filled with hatred that we cannot love and appreciate one another? Are we so immersed in ourselves that we cannot live with one another in peace and amity? Are we so violent that we fail to comprehend the basic tenets of a democracy? The late Senator Mike Mansfield of Montana penned those words after hearing about...
Confidently stating the brand origin of a product leads people to assume it’s of higher quality, especially if they’re not familiar enough to know whether it actually is. (“We only serve xxxx Ranch Beef,” “We use xxx mattresses for every bed,” “We proudly serve xxx coffee.”) There are very few meals that won’t get more nutritious by adding broccoli. We consider it amazing that ancient bards could memorize whole epics, but then would sing along to dozens or hundreds of songs by heart. You rarely hear people discuss DEFCON levels in movies...

September 1925. When reviewing the news from old Whitehall newspapers, what to include is much easier than what to leave out. While much of the local news focused on who was motoring where, visiting, or having dinner, there are plenty of other events that remind us of the good old days, which were both good and bad. Some of the news sounds a lot like what we are seeing today, and some would be nice to see today. The national news in the September editions of the Jefferson Valley News included...

This is a...

The group discussed several other topics: • Another “Nicaraguan Drug Boat” was blown out of the water in the Caribbean by the US military killing three; no process, no evidence, in international waters, • more hoops to jump through for Land and Water Conse...

Back in my dad’s day, heading out for a hunt meant grabbing a knife, a shell belt, a canteen, and maybe a sandwich or two stuffed in a coat pocket. Simple, light, and effective. These days? My back hurts before I’ve even left the trailhead—and I haven’t packed an ounce of meat yet. The truth is, what you really need in your pack depends on the situation, the season, and your personal preferences. It also depends on who you ask—some folks swear by minimalist setups, while others pack like they’re staying overnight (even if they’re not). I’ll adm...

Fall means many things: leaves changing color, cool breezes, and plenty of apples to pick. When an afternoon spent at the local orchard provides a bounty of apples, people can turn them into flavor-packed treats. This recipe for "Orange-Glazed Apple Tarts" from "Small Sweet Treats" (Gibbs Smith) by Zac Williams is a fall treat that blends apples (or pears) with the bright flavors of orange and cinnamon. INGREDIENTS (Serves 4) 1 package (17.3 oz) puff pastry sheets, thawed 1 egg beaten with 1...

Incarcerated but Free: Four New Testament Books for Today I’ll call him Bob. We traveled for not a few years on business, and when he was the driver, he would get into the zone and could talk. We could go twenty miles, and he could talk the whole time. I’d sit quietly for those miles, and he would just jabber away. Talk about “talking a person’s ears off.” I was his captive, no foul. This gives us our title for this new series: Life Behind Bars. We will study four Epistles, otherwise known as the “Prison Epistles.” We will examine the b...
