  • Dear Editor: In Support of Judge Dan Wilson

Hon. DANNI COFFMAN, Flathead County District Court Judge|Sep 25, 2024

Dear Editor, It is a common refrain that voters know little to nothing about judicial candidates. It is for this reason that I am sharing my experiences with Judge Dan Wilson, candidate for the Montana Supreme Court. As someone who had previously appeared as an attorney before Judge Wilson, served as a substitute Justice of the Peace in his court (prior to him being elected as District Court Judge), served with him in Rotary, and now works with him as a District Court Judge in the Eleventh...

  • Dear Editor: In Support of Shannon O'Brien

    JUNEAU McCULLOCH and KEENAN|Sep 25, 2024

Dear Editor, Questionable spending, suspension of fiscal responsibilities, who's looking out for the children? $67 million! That's the amount state auditors recently reported as State Superintendent of Schools Elsie Arntzen's "questionable spending" of federal pass-through money intended for local public schools. It is the responsibility of the state superintendent to ensure that federal money is allocated for its intended purposes and to hold schools accountable for how they spend those...

  • Thought Provokers: 9/25/2024

    Sep 25, 2024

Generation X is a placeholder until hindsight provides a better descriptor. It’s possible that the only animals that live on all seven continents are humans and penguins. Asking a good question is a skill. A plastic, screw-top bottle of Coca-Cola would have been a one-of-a-kind luxury 150 years ago. 300 years ago, it would have an energy potion in a magical bottle. Today, it’s tooth-rotting garbage packaged in trash. When a story ends with the protagonist waking up from a dream, it breaks your suspension of disbelief and the character’s suspe...

  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 9/22/2024

September 22, 1999 The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recently organized a tour of riparian-area restoration and management projects in the Belgrade and Whitehall areas to encourage healthier riparian zones. Along with managing cattle grazing on their riparian areas, they must also manage a large elk herd that has migrated to lower-elevation private ground due to recreational pressure in their...

  • Bridging the Gap Between National Suicide Prevention Month & National Service Dog Month

    Dog Tag Buddies|Sep 25, 2024

Montana has consistently ranked among the top three states for deaths by suicide over the past 40 years. Among our veteran population, the numbers fluctuate but remain nearly double the national average per capita. Unfortunately, we may never know the exact figures due to how the Veterans Administration calculates these statistics. While the numbers are alarming, it's even more concerning how the Veterans Administration addresses these needs, often relying heavily on medication. This approach...

  • How Fire Remakes Montana's Landscapes

    ZEKE LLOYD, Montana Free PRess|Sep 25, 2024

On Sept. 15, dry pine needles littered the forest floor, forming a beige blanket over charred soil. Insect chatter echoed through the woods while a woodpecker pounded the trunk of a scorched Douglas fir, scattering chips of charcoal. In mid-July, when the Horse Gulch Fire burned at its most intense, firefighters cut a perimeter along the timberline's edge, just beneath a ridge's saddle. Now, a narrow lane of overturned soil, evidence of firefighting bulldozers, separated blackened earth from...

  • How a Controversial Poison is Saving Utah Lake

TED WILLIAMS, Writers on the Range|Sep 25, 2024

Ninety-five-thousand-acre Utah Lake is a major water source for the Great Salt Lake. If it dries up or sickens, so does the Great Salt Lake. Fifteen years ago, it was dying. But the controversial herbicide glyphosate saved it. Virtually everything most Americans think they know about glyphosate-the active ingredient in products like Roundup-is wrong. That's because social media and ads by lawyers offering to sue Bayer (owner of Monsanto, glyphosate's original manufacturer) are rife with...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Hot Holiday Punch

    Sep 25, 2024

Images of warm family gatherings dominate millions of people's holiday season memories. But the warmth inside a home come the holiday season does not mean it's not cold outside. Indeed, snow-filled landscapes and/or temperatures below freezing are not uncommon come late December. As the mercury drops outside, families can warm up inside with a batch of Hot Holiday Punch courtesy of Lines+Angles. INGREDIENTS: 16 cups water, divided 5 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen, plus extra for garnish 2...

  • Just Ask Georgia: 9/25/2024

    GEORGIA|Sep 25, 2024

Georgia, I have a question, My (32f) fiance Peter (30m) had arranged a candle-lit dinner in a hotel room. There were flowers, rose peddles, and music. It was my favorite dinner and my favorite dessert. Peter was in a tuxedo, and I was wearing a dress. That evening was amazing. While I was eating, my IBS started acting up. I ran to the bathroom. It was mortifying, but I was comfortable enough with Peter to allow him to come in. I apologized for ruining our evening while on the toilet, and he said it was okay. I felt he wanted to ask me to marry...

  • CONNECTING POINT: Are the Lights On?

    BILL LANES|Sep 25, 2024

I appreciate living in the modern age as an American, we have so many connivances and advancements in technology including electricity, lights, heating, cooling, running water and sewer, transportation, internet services, and so much more. Others are less fortunate around the world, so we should keep this in mind. Many incorrectly assume Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. While it is true that in 1878, Thomas Edison first patented the incandescent lightbulb to become commercially available, the invention of the lightbulb belongs to Humphry...
