July 1899. Some of the front-page news could be from today. The Brazos Valley in Texas was devastated by a massive flood. Hundreds were rescued, and hundreds died. The early estimate was as many as 300 deaths, with the loss of livestock, crops, and other farm losses estimated between $7,000,000 and $15,000,000. The other loss was also in the millions. In today's dollars, the farm loss would be between $271,000,000 and $581,000,000. Near Anaconda, a massive forest fire was destroying valuable...

It has definitely been an adventure this summer with all of the road construction right out the front doors of the Whitehall Community Library. I was admiring how beautiful it looked when everything was blocked off again to chip seal the highway. You can still get here, as hundreds of readers proved last week, just come in by the post office if First Street is blocked off. The highway workers are trying to make sure no one gets hurt; they aren't here to inconvenience anyone. My admiration for...

A summer barbecue or picnic wouldn't be the same without the perfect dessert. While a slice of pie with ice cream on top is a fan favorite, a fruit tart can be a welcome change, especially when it's bursting with juicy, delicious berries. This recipe for "Blackberry Streusel Tart" from "Classic Stars Desserts" (Chronicle Books) by Emily Luchetti is full of blackberries that are soft and juicy. Select varieties of blackberries, such as olallieberries and marionberries, which are not too tart nor...

Whitehall Indivisible hosted its first speaker of July, Jeff Mangan and Chris Burke of "The Montana Plan," at the Whitehall Elementary School Library on Wednesday, July 2nd. The Montana Plan is a 2026 ballot initiative aimed at removing corporate spending from Montana elections. Unlike recent efforts to remove dark money from influencing Montana elections, this will not attack Citizens United regarding free speech. Instead, the Montana Plan will rely on the 10th Amendment's states' rights to...

One of the greatest things about being in a library for many years is meeting some amazing people. I just got off the phone with Kyle Groves, the magician visiting the Whitehall Community Library, and he is excited about coming here next Wednesday, July 16th, at 10:30 AM. I remember when he was assisting his father, Mr. E, while children laughed, clapped, and were amazed at everything they saw. Now, Kyle is entertaining a whole new group of young readers and spreading the message that reading is...

Refreshing salads are favored at such gatherings, and the interesting pairing of peaches and tomatoes makes the most of these fruits when they're at their peak. Sweet and savory flavors combine in this recipe for Peachy Tomato Salad courtesy of The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook (Rockridge University Press). This delicious side pairs best with grilled fare. INGREDIENTS: 2...
The American Red Cross urges all donors to give blood now to keep the blood supply strong this summer. Type O blood products are most needed on hospital shelves – especially in the face of summer challenges that can quickly cause blood and platelet reserves to drop. In addition to summer fun and holidays, severe summer weather can have a sudden impact on the ability to collect blood and platelets. Scheduling and keeping donation appointments are crucial this month to ensure blood products are constantly available in the weeks to come for all p...

Many people have been stopping by the historic fishpond in the center of Whitehall to see the trout that are normally there by the Memorial Day weekend. However, this summer the pond is dry and the fish are missing. Why? The Town of Whitehall’s decision to chlorinate the water has made it impossible to stock the pond this summer unless a fresh water source can be provided for the fish. Trout cannot tolerate any level of chlorine. The Whitehall Rotary Club has been looking into various options to make stocking the pond a possibility for this s...

Construction is now substantially complete on the Whitehall Urban Pavement Preservation Project. Happy Independence Day! The Whitehall Community Library will be closed July 4th and 5th, but will be open regular hours the rest of the week surrounding the holiday. There will also be no lunches on the 3rd and 4th of July, as the cooks in Butte are taking a mini-holiday. These ladies co...

The clustered stems, expanding root system, milky white sap, bright green flowers encased in a yellow-green bract, and narrow leaves are characteristics of one of Montana's notorious noxious weeds, leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula). This species, like many other noxious weeds, is an Eurasian native species. It was most likely introduced to North America via contaminated ship ballasts, and the earliest recorded presence in North America dates back to 1827. This herbaceous perennial is a threatening...
