  • The Slippery Slope of E-Bike Access

MARJORIE SLIM WOODRUFF, Writers on the Range|Jul 2, 2025

When I visited Bryce Canyon National Park recently, the shared paths were crowded with electric motorcycles. They say they are e-bikes: If they can rip uphill at 20 miles per hour without pedaling, I think of them as motorcycles. E-bikes can be class 1, 2, or 3. Class 1 provides assistance when the pedals are turned. Class 2 has a throttle that can propel the bike without pedaling. Both have a top speed of 20 mph. Class 3 bikes, also pedal-assisted, have a maximum speed of 28 mph. Only class 1 and 3 are allowed in national parks. Friends with...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Vegan Chocolate Mousse

    Jul 2, 2025

Being mindful of one's diet is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Certain foods, and particularly many desserts, are not exactly synonymous with healthy eating. Thankfully, many chefs and home cooks experiment with different ingredients to make sweets a little bit less indulgent. Take, for example, chocolate mousse, which can be delicious, but a tad heavy when loaded with dairy. However, Vegan Chocolate Mousse is made with avocado at the base. That's notable because avocados contain...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago... June, 1925 - Part II

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jun 25, 2025

June 1925 was a lot less violent than it was back in 1899. Still, there was plenty of bad weather and other bad news. Perhaps humor was the main item in short supply in the Jefferson Valley News that month, but several good examples were found. The editor must have been in a more solemn mood. National headlines were mostly moved to the back pages of the paper. Some of the top included the Amundsen-Ellsworth flight to the North Pole; the Teapot Dome scandal and who was indicted; and the upcoming...

  • Public Land Goes Back on the Chopping Block

    T.A. BARRON, Writers on the Range|Jun 25, 2025

The radical notion of selling off public lands is back. And this time it seems that only the Congress can stop the giveaway of America’s heritage to private interests—if its representatives listen to widespread public sentiment. Last week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee updated its budget bill to include making over 250 million acres of public lands in 11 western states eligible for disposal, including recreation areas, wilderness study areas, inventoried roadless areas, critical wildlife habitat and big game migration cor...

  • Whitehall Bio Weed Control: Dalmatian Toadflax

AVA BALOUGH, Whitehall Bio Weed Control|Jun 18, 2025

At this time of year, you might notice an infiltration of tall yellow flowers on your property. This Eurasian species arrived here in the early 1900s and has become quite the nuisance. Its thick, alternating leaves branch off of the thick stem, leading to the snapdragon-like yellow flowers located towards the top of the plant. You might have already guessed which noxious weed I am referring to: Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica). This invasive species thrives in cool, semiarid climates and...

The Hilger Valley Fire north of Helena marks the beginning of the 2025 summer wildfire season, and public health officials are urging residents to be prepared. “Though wildfire smoke lies outside a typical resident’s circle of control, there are little things people can do regularly to reduce their exposure to harmful and chronic air pollution,” says Jay Plant, Lewis and Clark Public Health Environmental Health Specialist. Exposure to wildfire smoke can harm human health, especially among individuals with existing lung and cardiovascular diseas...
