Cookies are a versatile treat that can incorporate a wide range of ingredients. There are no rules when it comes to making cookies, which means amateur bakers can take to their kitchens and whip up a batch of these beloved treats with whatever they have on hand in the pantry or refrigerator. Blueberries might be a go-to ingredient when baking a pie at home, but they also make for a delicious addition to a freshly baked batch of cookies. This recipe for "Butter Cookies With Blueberries" from...

Little did people realize in May 1926 that the great depression was just a few years down the road. The front page of the JV News was filled with local, mostly good, news. National and world news were a few pages back in the paper. President Coolidge was greeted by more than 2,000 Boy Scouts during the 16th convention of the scouting national council. A gold rush was growing in Canada; Kilauea was erupting; Lions International was planning a convention in San Francisco; airmail service was...

I'm sure you are wondering if Miss Brandi at the Whitehall Community Library can talk about anything other than early literacy? NO! This is such an important topic, and with summer reading just around the corner, I thought this was the perfect time to hijack the column. An Ohio State University study found that kids who have one book read to them daily hear roughly 296,000 words by age five, whereas children who are rarely read to hear roughly 4,600 words. Reading five books a day pushes the cou...

Before he died at age 87 in early May, Ted Turner knew that stewardship of land would be his real legacy. Of course, he might also be long known for starting CNN and 24-hour news, as well as building a major league baseball team, his hometown Atlanta Braves. He also started a UN Foundation to help bring peace to the world, thanks to his starter $1 billion contribution, and he tapped former U.S. Sen. Tim Wirth of Colorado to lead it. Wirth recalls how Turner, once dubbed “Captain Outrageous,” liked to shoot from the hip and could never be bot...

When the weather warms up outside, the desire for healthy, lighter fare rises alongside the mercury. That leads many people to turn to vegetables, which can satisfy hunger pangs but do not typically create feelings of sluggishness. Vegetables can be cooked in myriad ways, and some can even be eaten raw. If raw vegetables don't sound all that appealing, then roasting is a great way to eat healthy without sacrificing flavor. This recipe for Roasted Vegetables With Pignoli Nuts from Lines+Angles...

Whitehall Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chiara Schober recently encountered a roadside sign that reads, "There is a rest area 15 miles away," seemingly innocuous but profoundly misleading to travelers passing by Whitehall, MT. This personally affects our community, as it misleads countless weary drivers into assuming they must continue on the highway to find essential facilities and services, when in fact Whitehall businesses are mere minutes from the next exit. Many drivers miss our...

Members of the Whitehall Rotary Club were busy on May 12th painting concrete areas on the historic fishpond that sits at the south end of Main Street. All exposed rock was coated with a clear sealer. The club has scheduled a second maintenance day to repaint the eagle that sits on top of the center column, clean the interior, stain all of the wood structure and clean the granite tiles. If the non-chlorinated water supply to the pond can be done before the end of May, fish should arrive by early...

Summer is upon us, but I wish someone would inform the weather. As I am writing this, patrons at the Whitehall Community Library are telling me it is supposed to snow tonight. Given that forecast, it seems strange to state that the library will be closed on Monday, May 25th, for Memorial Day, then open the rest of the week at regular hours. I am working on a licensing agreement with an organization dedicated to teaching people over 50 all aspects of the digital world. The program includes workshops, classes, resources, hands-on experience, and...

"However, 30 percent of Jefferson County renters are facing rental costs they cannot afford."...

Stroke is a medical emergency. When it happens, every minute matters and calling 911 right away can save a life. Too often, people wait to see if symptoms pass or try to drive themselves to the hospital. That delay costs precious time. During a stroke, parts of the brain are deprived of blood and oxygen, and brain cells begin to die within minutes. The faster treatment begins, the better the chance of recovery. Strokes are usually caused by blocked arteries (85%) or bleeding in the brain. Immediate response is essential in either case. Know...
