Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park are seeking volunteers to help with a post-season cleaning of the caverns. Volunteers in this event will get the chance to see the caverns up close as they work to reduce some of the impacts of visitors’ presence in the cave. The project will be Saturday, Oct. 2, and will begin with an orientation at 9 a.m. at the main (lower) Visitor Center. Staff and volunteers will then continue to the cave, toothbrushes in hand. The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are falling, and everyone is starting to think about indoor activities. On Thursday, September 30th, at 5:30 p.m. the Library is hosting a family and friends game night. Three Forks resident Ted Roberts is bravely fighting Glioblastoma Multiform, one of the most aggressive human cancers. Over the weekend his friends and family traveled to his home for a family reunion and what may be a final visit. Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) officials report that nearly one in three Montanans aged 65 and older have reported falling at least once in the last 12 months. Further, about 1,900 Montanans were hospitalized due to unintentional falls in 2020. And, one in five falls result in a serious injury. DPHHS Falls Prevention Program Manager Melissa Dale said the issue really begins to impact Montanans after age 55. Antlers, horns, hides and skulls that were confiscated by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks enforcement will be auctioned on Sept. 25 at the National Auction House in Billings. Items include 50 big horn sheep skulls, 390-plus-inch bull elk, moose, deer, elk, bear, mountain goats, mountain lions, martins, antelope, bobcats and more. The Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted regulations for Montana’s first traditional muzzleloader season at its meeting on Aug. 20. House Bill 242 was passed in the 2021 Legislative Session and established a nine-day muzzleloader heritage hunting season for deer and elk that begins on the second Saturday following the end of the regular season.
