'Twas a soiree to remember! This past Saturday evening in mid-July, the Gentlemen's Club of Jefferson County met, in a tent erected for this shindig, in the environs of Whitehall, Montana. This spectacular event had been organized several decades previous by Mr E.G. Brook himself (not pictured). Although Mr. Brook had long passed, many of his descendants were present, as well as the spirit of the late "Founding Father." As this was supposed to be a male-only event, and indeed was attended by man...

For many teenagers, college is the first time they make money decisions without parental assistance. But if they don’t fully understand how finances work, they leave themselves open to making costly and long-lasting mistakes. “Many teens don’t intuitively know how to manage money. That’s why it’s critical for parents to sit down with their kids and have an open and honest discussion about financial basics,” said Michael Sullivan, a personal financial consultant with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt management...
Returning to the new school year will be different for some students. Many states are seeing increased cases with the Delta Variant or are implementing new COVID mandates. However, America is finally being unmasked. America’s young people are of a statistically low risk from COVID based on the CDC’s own data and should mitigate their own risk. Returning to college will present challenges, whether post-covid hurdles, adjusting to on-campus learning, or avoiding issues with substance use—there are going to be certain risks and challenges. Most...

This fall, college students are returning to campus, many for the first time in over a year, marking the start of new classes, new friends, and new living spaces. Through their annual Campus Fire Safety for Students campaign, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and The Center for Campus Fire Safety (CCFS) are working together to ensure living spaces are as safe as possible for students heading back to school this September. Campus Fire Safety Month raises awareness about the threat of fire among college students in both on- and...

See the beautiful Clearwater and Swan River Valleys and enjoy this popular campground park known for its smooth water, good fishing and water sports. Placid Lake was named after the Adirondack Mountains' Lake Placid by Hiram Blanchard, a New Yorker who moved to the area in 1892 to form the Clearwater Land and Livestock Company. A dam was completed below the lake's Owl Creek outlet in 1972, and the park was created in 1977. The park offers an opportunity to view rednecked grebes, ospreys, common...

In Japanese cooking, tempura is a delicate dish of batter-fried seafood or vegetables. The light and crispy coating on the food gives it a distinguishable and hard-to-resist flavor. Tempura is often served as an appetizer or side dish. Even though it has a Japanese name and has been enjoyed in that country for centuries, tempura actually has European origins. Food historians say that tempura can be traced back to the influence of Portuguese merchants and missionaries who arrived in Japan in the...
The non-partisan League of Women Voters is sponsoring a voter registration station to provide an important service to our community and area. “Is your voter registration current?” is the question posed as you pass the flag-bedecked booth in the park across from Bordens. “Will you be 18 by election day? Are you a new Montana resident? Have you changed your name or address? Would you rather receive a mail-in ballot?” Voter registration and mail-in registration forms are available for these updates and will save a trip to Boulder or your county...

I am pretty sure we all agree that we want life to get back to normal already. So, it pains me to tell you that COVID-19 cases in our community of Butte and our surrounding areas are rising. Subsequently, COVID hospitalizations are increasing and the healthcare community anticipates this trend to continue. The Delta variant is now becoming the dominant strain in Montana. This is bad news on many levels. For one, this variant is more contagious. People who have been infected with the Delta variant, even those who have no symptoms, carry more...
Sunday was quite the downpour in Whitehall, but I must say, it was lovely to wake up and feel the cool air pouring in my windows. It made me realize how fast fall is approaching with all the fall programs beginning in September. I don’t know about anyone else, but it seems this summer just disappeared before we even had a chance to enjoy it. A reminder that the library will be closed on Labor Day, September 6th. We will be open regular schedule the rest of the weekend. I thought I would give everyone a little fall preview of the new programs w...
AUGUST 8, 1996 Jefferson County Health Nurse Paula Anders called the Ledger Friday to ask cooperation in alerting Whitehall area residents to an outbreak of pertussis – whooping cough – in the county. Although none of the latest cases are in Whitehall and most are in the north end of the county, Anders said she is concerned that the disease could spread, especially with school starting soon. A little bit of public education might help nip the spread in the bud, she said. According to an informational flyer from the Center for Disease Con...

Designed for school safety teams, educators, school nurses, mental health professionals, law enforcement, and emergency and disaster preparedness coordinators, the Jeremy Bullock Safe Schools Summit has a theme of School Safety – Post Covid Re-group and Re-energize. “Over the past year, edu...
Perhaps one of the most personal decisions you can make every day is deciding what to eat. But what happens when multinational corporations in the agricultural industry take that power away from the individual by using their size, wealth and power to determine the price and selection on our grocery shelves? For these conglomerates to influence what we consume, they first need to control the people who produce our food. That is where the corporations’ real power lies: dominating what is grown, how it’s produced and, most critically, how the...
SCREAMS COME TRUE, Whitehall’s haunted house and hay maze, has been scaring kids and adults every October and we are excited to start plans for the 2021 installation! Yes, SCREAMS COME TRUE is in its THIRD year AND we survived a pandemic! 2020 was a bit strange for us, as we had to accommodate COVID-19 Restrictions and set up timed appointments for entering the haunted house, as well as disinfect after each tour—but we did it! SCREAMS COME TRUE is an amazing opportunity to be a part of something unique and exciting. We are looking for ass...
