This is reflected in the May 1 snowpack percentages, with southwest and...

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is continuing its focus on trout health and population monitoring in the upper Jefferson River basin as part of a cooperative research effort that began last year. Since then, FWP has collaborated with Montana State University in three PhD studies looking at causes of mortality for adult...

For 17 valley irrigators, the new millennium and the new technology will eliminate irrigation guesswork and wasted water and energy. Many community members - and some guests helped celebrate Spring...

Fishing licenses will not be required May 10 and 11, and the forecast looks fine. In 2021, Gov. Greg Gianforte signed into law Senate Bill 61, which makes it free for anyone, resident and nonresident, to fish in Montana on Mother’s Day. Montanans have enjoyed free fishing on Father’s Day weekend for more than 10 years. Here’s a rundown on the latest fishing report for area reservoirs: Canyon Ferry:...

Members of the Jefferson River Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Alliance conducted a two-month fundraising campaign over the winter and purchased the 4.43-acre parcel sight-unseen in January. This was the first opportunity for group members to see the new campsite. "Saving open lands is a sacred mission, said chapter member Michael Enk...
Public lands are one of our country’s great equalizers. It doesn’t matter how much money you have—a billionaire and a bus driver both get the same access to our parks, deserts, rivers and forests. Each one of us owns these lands together. They are literally America’s common ground. Like so many Americans, I’ve built a life around public lands—exploring them, defending them and working to ensure they remain open to all. From my early days in Montana to leading the Bureau of Land Management and now as president of The Wilderness Society, I...

Mark your calendars this week for a day of Japanese adventure. Nao and Nanako will be here on Thursday, May 8th, at 2 PM and 5:30 PM. They will teach everyone to play a Japanese instrument called a Koto and learn about Japan. The 2 PM session is designed for children, and the 5:30 PM session is for older students and adults. Noa is returning to Japan in July, so this is the last time we can enjoy her presentations. We had so much fun with her last summer when she taught the summer reading childr...

You may have noticed all of the new mulch and weeding done to the front and side yards of the Whitehall Community Library this last week. The Friends of the Library donated ten bags of mulch to keep the moisture in and the weeds out. Our many volunteers have been working hard to get the flower beds ready for summer, and we can't wait for all the irises to come up that Brandi planted last fall. We are not sure what color they are, so this will be a fun surprise. Have you ever wanted to learn...

Members of the Whitehall Rotary Club and three other volunteers completed filling 49 large bags with sorted aluminum cans earlier in April for delivery to the recycling center in Butte during Earth Day week. They received a higher price during that time for the aluminum, which totaled 2919 pounds. Money earned from this effort helps fund the club's many local projects. Non-member volunteers included Tom and Sarah Ahlin and Thane Burtch. Thane hauled the bags in multiple trips to Butte, for...

In my most recent column, I shared a few accounts from my personal and professional life that I consider "Stories Worth Telling" – narratives that provide insight into my views and values on preventing illness and promoting community health. Today, I'd like to share one more – the story of a rural Montana boy who grew up to become the world-class scientist and great public health champion Maurice Hilleman. Still largely unknown, Hilleman was born and raised on a farm in Custer County. He was dri...
To breathless media coverage, a company called Colossal Biosciences now claims to have produced three genetically engineered pups of the long-extinct dire wolf. Scientific criticism followed fast. The company’s press release claimed the pups to be “the world’s first de-extinct animals … brought back from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed by Colossal from ancient DNA.” Experts in paleogenetics pointed out that only 14 genes, with 20 differences between living gray wolves an...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff, in cooperation with Montana State University, have begun the second year of tagging trout in the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, and Madison rivers. This effort is part of ongoing research aimed at understanding trout declines and fish health concerns in rivers in the upper Missouri River Basin. When anglers report these tags, it helps researchers better understand how environmental conditions and other factors contribute to the population recruitment, survival, and mortality of trout. “This is a great c...
