Parents should make sure they have arrangements in place for the care of their minor-aged children when planning their estates, according to Montana State University Extension. To make sure parents’ wishes are followed, Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension family and economics specialist, and Kaleena Miller, MSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources agent in Madison-Jefferson County suggest parents create a will that names a guardian and a conservator in case both parents die. A guardianship provides for the care of the children until age 18 a...

The American Red Cross along with actor James Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, have joined together to urge all who are healthy to make this a summer full of life for patients by scheduling an appointment to give blood or platelets. As the nation transitions to a new, hopeful phase of this devastating pandemic and people begin to return to some of their favorite activities, the Red Cross is concerned about the impact this could have on blood donor turnout and the blood supply this summer. The need for lifesaving blood transfusions never...

Health is a lifelong journey. For each of us that journey is unique. Every one of us has our own approach to health and wellness. This week, National Women’s Health Week, serves as a reminder for women and girls to take steps toward caring for themselves and making health a priority. It is not easy to take steps toward better health. Women are often caring for people besides themselves. Life is busy. We are making history as we navigate a pandemic. What steps can we take toward better health? A...
State Leaders applauded the program as “…One of the finest projects I have ever seen undertaken by an Organization. . .” Numerous enough to notice, infrequent enough to startle at seeing, they stimulate reverence, sorrow, sympathy, curiosity, and caution. They affect us all to one degree or another. They are the white crosses which mark the sites of fatal traffic crashes along the highways of Montana. For over 68 years, these white crosses have reminded passing motorists of the dangers of the road, as well as the lives that have been lost...

Following on the heels of a March which yielded well below average mountain and valley precipitation, April delivered the same pattern of dryness with monthly temperatures once again vacillating from well above average to well below average during the month. "April yielded a little bit of everything in the temperature department. The month began with record warmth at mountain locations, which transitioned the low elevation snowpack to melt by the end of the first week," said Lucas Zukiewicz, wat...

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds landowners, watershed groups and others that this summer’s deadline to apply for Future Fisheries Improvement Program grants is May 31. The goal of FWP’s Future Fisheries Program is to restore rivers, streams and lakes to improve Montana’s wild fish habitat. Each project is assessed by an independent review panel and final funding decisions are made by the Fish and Wildlife Commission. To learn more about the Future...

There's no denying the appeal of dairy in home cooking. Dairy helps make foods silky, creamy and more satisfying. Cheeses in particular can make meals more rich and more flavorful, so much so that they can be truly addictive. Layering cheesy goodness can set any meal apart. That's just what happens with "Cheesy Chicken Tortellini Bake" from The Pampered Chef Stoneware Inspirations (The Pampered Chef Ltd.) by The Pampered Chef Test Kitchens. Freshly cooked chicken and homemade tortellini can be...

Promoting health and wellness are the pieces of my job that are closest to my heart. Creating opportunities for people to have an awareness of and make choices that improves their overall quality of life brings great satisfaction. I view wellness as a spectrum. For each of us, throughout our lives, we can move on that spectrum. There are times when we are more, or less, physically, emotionally or mentally well. Well-being integrates both physical and mental health in preventing disease and promo...

MAY 2, 1996 What should Whitehall be in the year 2010? What can Whitehall residents do to guide the community in that direction and steer clear of undesirable changes? Those questions are the focus of a project called Vision 2010 which has been underway for several months and is about to result in some concrete plans. On Monday, May 6, Whitehall residents will get their first glimpse of architectural plans developed after a series of public meetings. The plans, created by Montana State University architectural students, provide visual and...

Osprey nests can cause power outages and even fires, and their proximity to energized equipment puts the birds at risk of electrocution. NorthWestern Energy has installed hundreds of platforms to maintain service reliability and to provide a safe place for ospreys to raise their offspring. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the date of the Mexican army's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Though it is considered a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United States are significant. The holiday has now become a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. However, even people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico enjoy Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Some Cinco de Mayo...
Want to know the key to achieving your dreams and goals and realizing a true life of significance? Altering your beliefs about yourself. As motivational speaker Ed Mylett so perfectly sums up, there’s a governor on our lives, and it’s our identity -- what we think we’re worth; what we think we deserve. A good person in any endeavor will only take what he thinks he deserves. In other words, a good person will not take more from the table of life than what he thinks he’s worth. And that’s where our self-imposed governor on our identity comes int...

LaDonna Knox was born in Midvale, Utah, near Salt Lake City; where she lived until about a year ago. After attending Midvale Elementary and Hillcrest High School, she worked for a medical surgeries kit making company, before eventually deciding to pursue a degree in Administrative Assistance. She was a secretary for several years before switching up the pace and becoming an HR Director at a glass company, where she presided for 15 years. In 2006, when the economy was struggling, the glass...

The Jefferson Valley Hospice, a wonderful organization based in Whitehall, has been active in our community since March of 1983. It all started with a hospice training course where thirty-two people signed up, which was supplied by the Highlands Office and was the initial contact for the start of the operation. The state licensed the group in 1984. Out of the 32 original trainees, fifteen remain on board. Some of the original members included: Jackie Uivary, Dr. Sacry, Duane Scott, Brooke Connor...

Vaccination is very much on my mind. Jefferson County Health has been actively administering COVID-19 vaccinations for the past three and a half months. We have participated in training to store, handle and administer the vaccines. Scheduled appointments, provided education, set up clinics and administered doses. However, this is not the only vaccination effort I have been thinking about. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused barriers for some individuals in receiving preventative health care....
Are you tired of political bantering? It is incredibly complex. But, does it need to be? Every issue seems to be politicized, medicine, immigration, the environment, social justice, even sports. During the 2021 NCAA tournament, commentator Charles Barkley said, “I think most white and black people are great. I really believe that in my heart. But I think our system is set up where our politicians, whether they are Republican or Democrat, are designed to make us not like each other so they can keep their grasp of money and power. They divide and...
