It would appear you are once again stuck with me, Miss Brandi, for this week’s update from the Whitehall Community Library! Let’s talk about Early Literacy! It’s not just about your child learning to read. In fact, there are several skills your child needs to master before they start learning to read. Print Awareness: Understanding how print works, reading from left to right, top to bottom, and that the words they see have meaning. Letter Knowledge: Recognizing the different shapes of each letter, knowing their names and sounds, and recog...

The April meeting for the Whitehall Garden Club (WGC) was held Wednesday, April 2nd, at the new Whitehall Ambulance building. The conference room is very nice, accommodating with beautiful tables, chairs, and other aspects that are conducive for successful business meetings. Great technology features, too. Thank you for letting us use the conference room. The weather was not friendly for our hostess Boulder friends to come, so Janet Finney and Kathy Ross were delighted to step in and set up a...
March 31st marked the end of the winter moratorium in Montana, which is that period of time when regulated utility companies need to first obtain approval from the Public Service Commission before disconnecting a customer’s natural gas or electricity account for non-pay. With the end of the moratorium, many Montanans need some help catching up on that winter energy bill. There are two main sources of home energy assistance in Montana: One is LIHEAP and the other is Energy Share. Montanans can apply for LIHEAP through April 30th. LIHEAP is incom...

Hamburgers are a staple of backyard barbecues. When summer arrives, few foods embody the laid back vibe of the season better than grilled hamburgers. There's nothing wrong with a traditional approach to hamburgers, but going the extra mile and augmenting the flavor with some special ingredients can make these beloved summertime staples even more popular. If that's your goal, then consider this recipe for "Hamburgers with Stilton Cheese, Caramelized Shallots and Mushrooms." INGREDIENTS: For...

Whitehall Elementary fourth grader Aleena McDonald has been selected as the first place winner in the Missoula Public Library's fiction writing contest for her age group. In January, Mrs. Loomis gave the class information for the writing contest and encouraged students to submit an entry. Aleena took the initiative to write a story and, with the help of her parents, submitted an entry before the deadline. Last week, Aleena was notified that her submission, "The Shadows," a seven-page,...

MARCH 29, 2000 The Whitehall High School building was burglarized sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning on March 26-27, and chemistry laboratory equipment, money, and a VCR were among the items stolen. Entry to the school was gained through a broken window, and some doors and locks inside were also damaged. The Whitehall Town Marshal Topper Giono investigated the crime scene, and the burglary remains under investigation. This is the first time the school has been broken into this...

The Whitehall Elementary fourth grade took first place! The Whitehall PTSA said they had never seen so much dedication. Because of this, they are rewarding every grade with an ice cream party! The fourth graders will also get to choose a pizza or taco party and an extra recess. What a battle between first grade and fourth grade! Great job!...

One of the greatest things about networking with other libraries at conventions is sharing resources. I discovered that a larger library has a huge selection of STEM kits they are willing to share with the Whitehall Community Library for programming. I also found a great source for wildlife programs and speakers. Sharing saves the library hundreds of dollars in programming costs, not to mention that we don't have the space to store fifty or sixty boxes. We can't wait to open the list and start...

Chapter One: Me and New Friends Hi, my name is Brooke. I just moved from Missouri to West Virginia, which is a very haunted state, or at least I heard. I don't believe in that kind of stuff. Anyways my house is beautiful. And my room is huge! It's probably my imagination, but I've been seeing shadows lurking in the corners of my room. Today is my first day of school. Maybe if I make some friends, they'll show me around. When I got to school, they announced me as a new student. The teacher...
Several species of ticks are native to Montana, and they are a common sight for runners, hikers and campers in the spring and summer months. But for the first time, specialists in Montana have identified a blacklegged tick in the state, a species that can carry and transmit Lyme disease. Rocky Mountain wood ticks and American dog ticks are commonly seen in Montana, said Marni Rolston, a diagnostician in MSU Extension’s Schutter Diagnostic Lab in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology. Rolston identified the specimen, which was f...

Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of a masa dough and fillings, then steamed in a corn husk or banana leaves. While tamales certainly are delicious, the time-consuming nature of making them may compel some to avoid preparing them at home. This recipe for Chicken Tamale Pie offers the flavors of tamales in a single-pan dish. Try it, courtesy of 30-Minute Meal Prep (Sourcebooks) by Robin Miller. DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Coat a 9-inch pie plate or oven-safe skillet...

Fashions have changed, towns have become cities, and cities are metropolitan areas, but some things are not much different now than they were 100 years ago. The following news items are taken as written in March 1925 editions of the Jefferson Valley News. Outside of Montana, headlines include the Federal Probation Act, which became law and allowed probation as an option for a federal prison sentence. Calvin Coolidge was inaugurated for a second time, with the event broadcast on the radio for the...

MARCH 22, 2000 Frontier Days expands to two weekends! The NRA Rodeo and new event - a carnival - will run July 21-22 with a parade, street dance, and much, much more set for July 28-29-30. JTL Construction was awarded the Whitehall Road improvement project contract during the March 16 meeting of the Montana Transportation Commission. Still, like everything associated with the project, there was some controversy with the bids and contract award. The Whitehall Road construction project, on the dra...

I hope you all enjoyed Brandi's column last week - it is always nice to get a different perspective on things at the Whitehall Community Library. I have been writing this column for almost nine years and normally write 50 columns a year. That is a lot of words to share with our patrons! It always touches my heart when I miss a week and patrons come in see if I am alright or ask other staff where I am. That is one of the wonderful things about living in a small town where everyone knows everyone...

Cooking at home enables anyone to customize ingredients and gain control of the foods they eat. Too often, commercially processed items contain ingredients that compromise consumers' overall health. This recipe for Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake is made from pantry staples. Whether baking alone or with the family, try this recipe, courtesy of The Pampered Chef® Stoneware Inspirations (The Pampered Chef®, Ltd). INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 2...

MARCH 15, 2000 The Whitehall Town Council had a busy agenda during its March 13 meeting. By the time the council adjourned, it had hired a town attorney, given initial approval of a community decay ordinance, heard an update on the street paving project, and then decided to get tougher with abandoned and unlicensed vehicles. A decision was made to buy two new doors for the ambulance and police garage. According to information released this week from the Local Government Center at the University...

Let me introduce myself! I'm Brandi, the assistant Librarian here at the Whitehall Community Library. I have been asked to write this week's column; so I thought I would take this opportunity to share my passion here at the library. It is my goal to help each and every child grow to be a lifelong learner. I love seeing that "light bulb" moment when a child finally gets it - the wheels start turning and a thousand why questions follow. They ask such amazing questions I have to research and learn...
