  • Editorial: Meth: No stranger to small town America

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jul 5, 2017

The past several issues of the Whitehall Ledger have included feature articles about the meth problem in the state of Montana. The series was written by students at the University of Montana School of Journalism, and paints a frightening picture of the nationwide epidemic. As a publisher, I felt it was important to run these articles to let residents learn a little bit more about the problem. Unfortunately, small town America is not immune to meth and it is a problem in Whitehall, Boulder, and every other town or city in Montana. What is...

While they both excel at other sports, the two agree that baseball is their favorite, and both have played since they were four-years-old. The Outlaws are based...

  • Editorial: Thanks for running for office

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jun 28, 2017

A total of six candidates have filed for the four open positions in the upcoming Town of Whitehall elections. The Ledger would like to take time to personally thank each and every candidate that stepped up to the plate and made the decision to run for office. Serving as a Mayor or on the Council in any town has a lot of challenges, and often times it can be more difficult in a smaller town. The position requires many hours of meetings, research, as well as being a visible part of the community at a variety of events. The hours are far more...

  • Column: Just Right

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jun 28, 2017

I saw a picture on the Internet earlier today that really grabbed my attention. It was of probably a second or third graders response to the question, “Why are grown ups weird?” The child answered “Every one of them says how are you? And you always have to say good even when you are not.” This really got me thinking. There are probably ten times a day when I’m asked the question and my usual response is “good”. Earlier this morning I was in the line at the gas station and I saw someone I know and I said I was good, and moments later did the...

The Ledger editor has complete information on another page. It is going to take some research on the part of the Board to come to a resolution. Oh, for the time when we could use our own dumps to dispose of all that junk. I think that it was cheaper, too. During the hotter months of the year the hike to the entrance can be a solid workout followed by relaxing and...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jun 21, 2017

Every once in a while I catch something that is important and it is well worth it even if I have navigate through a mess of strange emails. I have four addresses that I use, and earlier today I went through all of them. While trying to delete some of the messages today I found some I had missed from letters to the editor prior to the election in November so I still miss...
