  • The Ledger Tradition Continues... 24 Best Wishes for 2024

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 3, 2024

In the January 7, 1998 issue of the Whitehall Ledger, owner Glenn Marx offered up 98 Best Wishes for 1998. What a great idea - and in the January 4, 2023 edition I restarted this tradition, though lucky for me, as we entered 2023, I only need to offer 23 Best Wishes. Now, on to 2024, and some best wishes for the new year! 24) Best wishes to everyone involved in the highly anticipated new Golden Sunlight daycare facility. 23) Best wishes (and speedy finishing) to the new Whitehall Town Pump. We can’t wait to see it! 22) Best wishes to the W...

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 3, 2024

PHOTOS THAT MADE 2023: Hundreds of photos were sent to the Whitehall Ledger in 2023 - landscapes, portraits, events, and more. Each week a photo was named BEST of the week, then placed on Facebook for your enjoyment. At the end of each year, the most "liked" photos are named the best. This year's first-place honors go to Sarah Smart's cloudy winter day. Second place is Tanya Johnson's peacock with a rainbow in the Jefferson Valley. Third place goes to Judy Chadwick's lovely river capture. Want...

  • Thought Provokers: 1/3/2024

    Jan 3, 2024

A majority of people’s last word of the year is “one.” Most people’s first word of the year is “happy.” There are billions of birthdays, but only 365 birthdays. People who can read minds in fiction rarely take the opportunity to read an animal’s mind. In 20 to 30 years, nursing homes and assisted living facilities will be playing Gangsta Rap. 100% of people who don’t understand the difference between causation and correlation will die. One of those songs you listen to might be your pet’s favorite and you have no way of knowing. Future g...

  • Our Town 125 and 100 Years Ago...January 1898 and 1924, Part I

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jan 3, 2024

8 YEARS AGO - JANUARY, PART I: A new year has just begun and a new century is just around the corner in January 1898. Unfortunately, miner deaths in Butte and Anaconda were all too commonplace. In London, Ontario, 30 people were killed when the floor in the city hall collapsed under the weight of several thousand who had gathered after election polls had closed. The U.S. Congress was heading back to work with a focus on the Hawaiian annexation question, a contested senate seat for Oregon, and immigration and finances. In Arkansas, a horrific...

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 3, 2024

JANUARY 6, 1999 The Whitehall Town Council, worried about liability exposure and possible court-imposed fees and damages, voted during a special council meeting on Monday, January 4, 1999, to both approve funding a legal defense for council member Ron Robertson and seek a legal clarification on whether or not the Town is legally obligated to fund Robertson's legal defense. Robertson, who serves as public works director for Whitehall, was also a town council member; a recent order by Montana...

  • Strength Training Program for Seniors

    KALEENA MILLER, MSU Extension|Jan 3, 2024

For many of us, exercising alone isn’t as enjoyable as doing it with others. For the past three months, community members have gathered at the Assembly of God Church in Whitehall to exercise together. For one hour, twice a week, you can find these fit folks moving around with dumbbells and ankle weights – doesn’t that sound fun? MSU Extension brought this strength training program to Whitehall after community members voiced interest in it, expanding upon the newly launched programs in Sheridan and Ennis. The class is open to all, there is no...

Celebrated for its spectacular scenery, remote location and excellent trout fishing, the Smith River is one of Montana’s most sought-after outdoor recreation experiences. A person applying for a Smith R...

  • Bear Identification Test Available Online Only

    Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks|Jan 3, 2024

Beginning this week, the Bear Identification (ID) test is available online only. Black bear hunters in Montana are required to pass the Bear ID test (distinguishing black bears vs. grizzly bears) to obtain a black bear license. Previously, hunters had two options to complete the Bear ID test – online or via a paper test available at regional offices. The paper test is no longer available, and hunters must now complete the test online. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks made the change to online only to streamline the licensing process. FWP encourag...

  • MSU Researcher Finds Sleep Deprivation Makes People Less Happy, More Anxious

    CARA PALMER, MSU News Service|Jan 3, 2024

Sleeping less does more than just make us tired. It can undermine emotional functioning, decrease positive moods and put people at higher risk for anxiety symptoms, according to a study led by a Montana State University professor who synthesized more than 50 years of research on sleep deprivation and mood. “In our largely sleep-deprived society, quantifying the effects of sleep loss on emotion is critical for promoting psychological health,” said Cara Palmer, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology in MSU’s College of Letters and S...

  • Connecting Point: The Family Tree

    BILL LANES|Jan 3, 2024

Ancestral genealogies are often searched today. Our youngest son has been looking into our family’s history recently. I just knew it, there is a “Thor” dating back to our Scandinavian side! In the age of the Internet, a person has multiple resources when it comes to a detailed family tree, all at a click and most likely at a cost. Luke, one of the disciples of Jesus, was meticulous as a personal physician. He also sought to investigate the claims and teachings of Jesus Christ thoroughly. In chapter 3 of his account, he includes a compr...

  • Editorial: A More Well-Rounded ME in 2024

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 3, 2024

Every New Year’s I set myself up for failure. I’m going to lose 30 pounds this year! I’m going to wake up early and go for walks every morning! I’m going to cut sugar, wheat, milk, and all things fattening out of my diet. Yeah...right. However, this year feels a bit different. My best friend Stevie, when we were making New Year’s plans, stressed me out when she said she wanted her NYE to be “intentional.” What does that mean? But it turned out to be an evening of girl talk, Love Island Games, and creating 2024 vision boards. We ended the eve...
