  • Remembering Coach Loomis: Former pupils fondly reflect on mentor, friend

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

The Whitehall area suffered a huge loss Saturday with the passing of longtime coach and educator James Loomis. The first person elected to the Whitehall High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Loomis is remembered not only for his accolades as a coach, but for the tremendous impact he made on students and the local community. During a hall of fame ceremony in February of 2016, Loomis was inducted by two of his former wrestlers Shane Shaw and Mike Hedegaard. Earlier this week, the two shared what Loomis meant to them as a person and coach, and also...

  • Bringing the past to life: Graham takes inspiration from old photos

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

Growing up in Indiana, Whitehall resident Bonnie Graham showed an early interest in art. She took inspiration from her father who she said saw the beauty in everything, and would encourage her budding love of drawing. Last Sunday afternoon, an Artists Reception took place at Boulder Hot Springs to showcase her drawings on display through March in the resorts dining room. While the day was already extremely important as a chance for Graham to showcase her work, it took on even more significance...

  • Golden Sunlight mill set to run in mid-February

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

January was a quiet month for production at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine. At last week’s Community Transition Advisory Committee meeting, Mine General Manager Dan Banghart reported the production for the month was 0 ounces. Banghart said this was because the mill run has been deferred to this month. At last month’s CTAC meeting, Banghart stated at the start of the year they would run the mill twice a quarter. The first will take place in the middle of the February, and the second in mid March. He added they are hoping to achieve the sam...

  • Editorial: Something for everyone at Whitehall Library

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

While the heart of a library will always be the books, they can also provide a place for the community to gather for a variety of events. This is certainly the case at the Whitehall Community Library. I would really like to encourage residents who have not been the library in a while or at all, to come check out some of the interesting things going on. Some of the the many happenings currently scheduled at the library are computer classes, a writer’s group, book clubs, origami, adult water coloring and Tai Chi. There is truly something for e...

  • Column: Scotland?

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

People always ask me what the busiest day is for a small weekly newspaper. That's a pretty easy answer, both Monday and Tuesday are equally hectic, and a lot is getting done to ensure the paper will come out on time. Sometimes the best way to make these days a little less stressful is to not only work hard on Thursday and Friday, but to also work a little bit on the weekends. Even if it's an hour covering an event or writing a story, it lessens the workload of a very small staff. There are a few weeks where I have finished five or six stories,...

  • Trojans learn from 2016 5B District tournament

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Feb 15, 2017

They remember. Oh how they remember. The reference is to the 2016 District 5B tournament in Belgrade when the Whitehall High School boys basketball team went 0-2, thus failing to advance to the Divisional. The Trojans entered as the No. 2 seed, which earned them a bye in the first round. But they didn't play like the team that earned that bye and saw their season end. Whitehall coach Zach McLean and three of the team's top players – Braden Larsen, Andrew Simon and Max Feight – now echo sim...

Just moments after a 54-46 win over Townsend Friday night in Varsity Gym, Whitehall High School boys basketball head coach Zach McLean said any win in the tough Southern 5B League is a huge win. It turns out Whitehall had more than anyone in the league during the 2016-17 regular season. With the season sweep of the Bulldogs, the Trojans (14-4, 8-2 Southern 5B League) won the outright league title and will open next week's District Tournament in Belgrade with the number one seed. Whitehall will open the tournament Friday against the winner of...

The fifth seeded Lady Trojans are set to face rival and fourth seeded Boulder Thursday night at 6 p.m. It will be the third matchup of the year between the two squads, with the Lady Panthers picking up a 47-35 win at home, and a 34-23 win in Varsity Gym. Whitehall head coach Herman Gerving believes his team matches up with Boulder well, but said they need to come out of the gates...

The Whitehall High School wrestling team sent seven wrestlers to last week's state tournament at the MetraPark in Billings - – all seven walked away from the Metra Park Arena with at least one victory. "State is always a great experience. It's hard to prepare for if you haven't been before," coach Steve Sacry said. "I was pleased that everyone scored a win in their respective weight classes." The Trojans were led by Sophomore Connor Johnson who placed for the second consecutive year, f...

  • For Your Information

    Arcylle Shaw, Contributing Writer|Feb 15, 2017

Friday was a perfect day for skiing at Great Divide North of Helena. All of the students of the school boarded the school buses and made it a day of fun in the sun. Extras tagged along, too. Nice it was Friday. They could sleep in on Saturday. Trish Reiss headed up the planning and decorating crew for the Valentine Dinner at the Cardwell Church. Red Apron Catering served prime rib (it was delicious!), along with baked potatoes, etc. Cindy Brennan and her helper always prepare a great tasting meal. Games to keep the crowd busy as the food line...
