Just a few days after the annual Jefferson County Fair, organizers are pleased with the turnout at the 2016 event. "The 2016 fair was one of our best ever. We had a record-breaking number of people involved in many of our activities," fair board member Terry Minow said. According to Minow, attendance was definitely up overall in 2016. She said good weather played a part, but she also heard how much people appreciated how affordable the fair and rodeo is for families. "With a $2 parking fee, no...

  • Column: I wouldn't do that

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 31, 2016

There is something so spell binding about someone telling you "I wouldn't do that if I were you." I'll be the first to say it happens to me more than I would like to admit, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who falls prey to these viscous, yet captivating words. Thankfully this story isn't about me doing something I was told wouldn't be the best of ideas; I will instead give the honor to Melissa. The poor girl is sitting only about five feet from me as I type this and has no idea that I'm about to share this wonderful story, but she will learn...

When the Whitehall High School volleyball team took to the court last weekend in Manhattan, they did so for the first time under new head coach Lauren McDonald. A former coach at the middle school, McDonald has told her squad that it doesn't matter what class they are in or what their last name is. "If you show up and you put forth effort and we see that, than that's what we're going for, " she said. Having worked with a lot of the freshman and one of the sophomores on the team, McDonald said th...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 31, 2016

While it would be safe to say that Whitehall High School senior Hunter Flynn has had a great career in his time as a member of the cross country team, he's not quite done yet. Flynn, who finished fifth at state as a junior, is on a mission during the 2016 season that started last week in Boulder. He has his sights set on a first place finish at the state meet later this year in Kalispell. "The ultimate goal is a state title, and it will be me and Bryant Edgerton of Townsend fighting for that...

  • Trojans demolish Herders, Columbus next up

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 31, 2016

There was no doubt about this one. The Whitehall/Harrison High School football team started strong last Friday night in their first game of the season against Sweet Grass County, and never looked back in the 40-0 victory. The Trojans had a monster game from senior quarterback Braden Larsen who finished with six touchdown passes, and also dominated with a swarming defense that pitched a season opening shutout. "I love what I saw, but we still need to clean some things up," head coach Dan Lacey...
