INTRODUCING KATHLEEN FIKE: Greetings Whitehall! I pray all is well and you are feeling blessed. I thought I would share my thoughts and ideas via email and also post them in our Whitehall Ledger. This will achieve more and help avoid any hearsay. I realize it will be difficult to get Town folks interested, especially after speaking with a few folks, who felt their thoughts and input are usually dismissed. Why should they get involved when not heard? It is because of this statement that we MUST...

Dear Editor, The news keeps telling us how divided we are, but I don't believe that - I think shared interests far outpace the things that divide us. Music is one of them. The Montana Chamber Music concert on Saturday drew a packed house that was as politically diverse as possible, with everyone supporting and enjoying the event. Whenever help was needed - to carry a wheelchair over the stairs to the porch, to find a music stand, to help pack up chairs after the concert, haul furniture back...

Dear Editor, SYNERGY: Stop The Crisis. What is it that creates success in an economy? Is it Socialism? Is it Capitalism? Socialism is a government-controlled economic system intended to benefit everyone according to their individual needs. The government controls the system from top to bottom. Sound OK? Capitalism is an economic system where private individuals or businesses own production resources and operate for profit. Prices, production, and distribution are guided by supply and demand in...
Sad. The hate I see is sad. A week ago, last Friday, I was talking with a friend whom I have known for years. Pleasant, smiley conversation. We talked about the study commission and the lack of citizen care. Joked about things and then he turned to me in a complete change of mood and asked if I was still an avid Trump supporter. I told him what I tell everyone: I'm not an avid supporter; I am a supporter of a person who will work in the interest of the United States and its citizens, not other nations or non-citizens above citizens. He harshly...

Dear Editor, I invite your readers to a peaceful protest - the No Kings Rally on October 18th. I'm inviting all of you to show up and join me this Saturday, October 18 at the Butte Plaza Mall at noon for the No Kings Rally. I'll be carrying a large American flag, so I'll be easy to find. "But I don't have a sign!" Butte Indivisible has a pile of signs you can shuffle through and borrow. Also, you can just walk around and wave at people, signless. Sometimes people hand out little flags. "But I've...
Most humans are ok with being licked affectionately by strangers as long as they aren’t human. Werewolves would be transformed all day since moonlight is sunlight reflecting off the moon. If you ask someone if they have ever lied, and they say “yes,” you must believe them. Since they all require batteries or some form of power, electronics are actually a subscription. The praying mantis in A Bug’s Life had a moth as a spouse because he loved his life. Despite all their problems, peasants in feudal times probably slept a lot better than we do. V...

Everyone keeps telling me they cannot believe how fast this year is passing. It seems like just yesterday Brandi and I were planning summer reading and now there is snow on the ground! The cold weather brings out many of my favorite pastimes such a quilting, reading, painting, and project finishing. It is also the time for getting out of the house when I just want to stay home with a good book and a cup of tea. The Whitehall Community Library offers many programs for all ages to give patrons a...
American politician Patrick Moynihan once said, “You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.” This idea is at the forefront of the minds of Whitehall Indivisible (WI). If everyone were indeed accessing the same accurate facts, would the opinions be as widely divided? We think not. We do not believe in “alternative facts.” We acknowledge multiple perspectives on a single event and recognize the need for thorough research. Since we first started meeting in February, we have discussed the role of the media,...

Nick, Student Council President, is honored this week for his willingness to do many council activities and for bringing assemblies back "to life."...

Jacqueline Uivary passed away on October 9, 2025, at Meadowlark Manor in Whitehall, Montana. Jackie was born on March 11, 1930, to Earl and Helen Heberling in Northampton, Pennsylvania. She was an only child for 10 years until her four brothers, Jim, Dick, David, and Dan, were born. During the summers of her childhood, her family tent-camped full-time at a local reservoir so her father could be closer to his work. It was here that Jackie's love of the water and reading began. Jackie was a good... Full story

Fortunately, three archery hunters are uninjured after two recent encounters with grizzly bears in the Taylor Fork south of Big Sky. The first encounter involved two hunters on Sept. 29. They were hunting in the vicinity of a known elk carcass when they saw a grizzly bear. To make their presence known, the hunters yelled at the bear. The bear reportedly came toward the hunters, and they each fired once with handguns. Both the bear and the hunters left the site without further incident. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff learned of the...

This summer, a grizzly cub in Grand Teton National Park gained international fame after an adult male bear killed the yearling's two siblings. The sole survivor of the attack, dubbed "Miracle," then separated from its mother to fend for itself, sometimes hanging around a busy area of the park. As Miracle's story spread, the cub became the object of fascination for thousands of people. Perhaps that's no surprise, as many of us are intrigued by the grizzly's power and strength, along with the...
Paul, a most enthusiastic follower of Christ, sacrificed his life and devoted himself fully, encouraging others to believe. In Ephesians Chapter 2, Paul describes what it means to be brought back from death. To us, he seems a bit metaphorical. He is passionately earnest: “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, g...

It's common to indulge in sweet treats a little more often once the holiday season arrives. Halloween kicks off people's tendency to consume more desserts and candies, and Thanksgiving, and later Chanukah and Christmas, may round out the year on a sugary note. Desserts can be made a bit healthier with the right ingredients. Nuts certainly can pack nutrition into each sweet bite. This recipe for "Pecan Cream Cheese Cookies" features pecans prominently. With only 4 grams of carbohydrates per servi...

Blasting demonstrations. Life-like nursing simulations and cadaver dissections. Deep dives into artificial intelligence and video game design. There's no better place for high school students to explore in-demand careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) than Montana Technological University's Fall Tech Day, to take place on November 14, 2025, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. "Tech Day is perfect for students who aren't quite sure what they want to study, deciding between a couple of dif...
One of the renowned primatologist’s final acts was to record a video message for the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, just days before she died. The name David Graybeard may not ring many bells, but it struck the science world like a sonar blast when it hit the scene in the 1960s. Naming violated rules of the scientific community at the time, when Jane Goodall gave it to a chimpanzee she was studying in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park. Giving animals names anthropomorphized them, invited emotional bias, and disrupted the statistics. So, whe...
