It was a speedy meeting of the Whitehall Town Council on Monday, October 20, at the Town Hall, as finishing up summer projects and preparing for winter was on the to-do list for the Town over the last month. Whitehall Town Clerk Sarah Unruh reported that $20K in past due water/sewer balances have received reminder notices and doorhangers; unpaid balances will be submitted to the County to be added to tax bills at the end of the month. Unruh also noted that she has not had time to regularly update the Town’s website, but if anyone notices any s...

As ever-increasing food costs and other everyday expenses push more Montanans toward food insecurity, the Town Pump Charitable Foundation is providing over $2 million in grants this fall to combat hunger in Montana, and several local organizations are participating. The Foundation is matching $1.2 million to help raise $4 million during its annual "Help Those in Need" fundraising campaign for Montana food banks through Nov. 30. Additionally, the Foundation in October awarded 110 grants totaling...
In the 2025 Montana Legislative session, House Bill 719 was passed, which now requires voters to provide their year of birth on the affirmation envelope. Please be sure that before submitting your voted ballot to the Election Office, the affirmation envelope includes your signature along with your year of birth. A ballot will be rejected if it does not include these two required items. MCA 13-13-201(e). This requirement became effective on October 1, 2025. As standard procedure, the Election Office will always try to reach out to the voter if...

Hello Everyone, The election is going on and before you vote, I have to tell you... I have no team. I was hoping I could be a part of the Whitehall team. I think our team will make some great plays. With encouraging, coaching, and having our heart and mind on getting to home plate. I hope you will allow me to be on your team. I’m sure we will have some foul balls and pitch some walks, but if we catch those errors, we will cross the home plate together. Vote Kathleen Fike for Mayor! KATHLEEN F...

Dear Editor, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “Anyone who knows me, knows that I DETEST politics!” Having read Jim Buterbaugh's Op-Ed on “Hate,” I cannot with any honesty back him on every point. Burt, on his main point, we are in total agreement! The senseless vitriol that we see, hear, and read about on a daily basis is taking its toll on this nation! At least for those who observe the evening news (I’ve also said this before, I almost religiously DON’T watch the news). The prob...

Dear Editor, This is a response to Jim Buterbaugh. Dear Jim, Sometimes the pot calls the kettle black. Much of the discord and lack of civility in this country is coming from the very top. While you say you are sad because of the reaction of some people to the behavior of the president, you immediately start right in, blaming others. You say "bite me" and your two words, starting with "F"? This does not lend itself to bridging the divides in our country. Donald Trump is a mean, vindictive man....

Dear Editor, I would like to respond to Jim Butterbaugh’s Sad op-ed in the Whitehall Ledger. Jim, your editorial expresses more hate. I think the Bible quotes to ”turn the other cheek.” Your opinions should be accepted as well as your friends without malice. There are good Americans in both parties. Yes, you are right; many people have left both parties. Our Congress members of both parties, especially in Montana, never respond to our concerns. Yet we taxpayers pay their salaries to repre...

Dear Editor, This is to the residents of the American town of Whitehall, Montana. I am writing a reminder to citizens of Whitehall, Montana, aged 18 years old and above, to vote in the election for Mayor, our town manager. This is a very important duty of you as an American to vote. Voting is not a privilege; it is an earned freedom to cast a vote on how your town is run and what will best determine your and your children's future. Choose the candidate who can make the lives we live better, and...

Dear Editor, With the upcoming election for Whitehall mayor, I would like to encourage residents to get involved in local government. I appreciate both Linda Jung and Kathleen Fike answering various questions in a recent edition of the Whitehall Ledger. Why is involvement vital for Whitehall? First, getting involved in various forms of local government by inquiring about a wide range of committees. Many people are not aware that the three wards can have multiple town council representatives, and...
In last week’s paper I read a rather long Op-Ed from Jim Buterbaugh entitled “The Hate I See is Sad.” I agree with Jim that there is a great deal of hate in this country right now. In the last five years FBI data shows a marked increase in anti-Asian crime, anti-Jewish crime, and anti-LGBTQ crime. Of the more than 11,000 hate crimes reported to the FBI in 2023 over half of them were anti-Black crimes. Clearly we have a problem in this country with hate. So I read Jim’s letter hoping that he would share some insight into how to address this pr...

Skunks invade Whitehall yards. To the year of the drought, the year of the fires, and the first year of a new millennium, you can add this in Whitehall: 2000 is the Year of the Skunk, as skunks have invaded the town. Possibly fueled by a lack of food in the dry creek bottoms that skirt the edges of Whitehall, skunks have waddled in large numbers to Whitehall yards, alleyways, and porches in search of food. FWP wardens have stated "this is the worst year for skunks I've ever had in my 11 years...

Thank you to everyone who has been sending jeans to the Whitehall Community Library! We still need more as it takes 546 denim squares plus 546 cotton squares to make one bed quilt. We are taking both denim and cotton fabric if you have old projects sitting at home that will never get done! The girls are working really hard every week, and they are making real progress with their cutting and block designs. This Thursday, October 23, at 5:30 PM, we will be hosting the Homeschool Mom's Night Out...

October 1925 – Winter arrived early with heavy snow in some areas, just like 2025. The Jefferson Valley News was sharing stories from 25 years ago, just like now. The following are national and local news items that appeared in the October 1925 editions of the Jefferson Valley News, some edited for length. The American Legion dance ad appeared in the October 29, 1925 edition. NEWS REVIEW OF CURRENT EVENTS: According to the London Daily Graphic, the British government has learned that since 1...

The inductees were chosen from a field of candidates nominated by the general public. Inductees are honored for their notable contributions to the history and culture of Montana. "The Hall of Fame exists to honor those who have made an impact in their part of the state and represent Montana's authentic Western heritage for future generations,"...
At least 15 people from Whitehall attended the No Kings rally in Butte, with several attending rallies in other parts of the country. Everyone reported good spirits, clever signs, and a positive atmosphere. The participant count across the country was around 7 million, making Oct 18th the largest demonstration in US history. For those who question the point of the rally, Andrew Egger of The Bulwark said it best: The “No Kings” protests had one specific and concrete aim: breaking the mirage of Donald Trump’s supposed mass popular mandate. Three...
The right to know takes different forms at different levels of government. At the federal level, the Freedom of Information Act gives citizens a way to request government records. In Montana, the right is built directly into the state constitution (the “right to know”) and spelled out in the Montana Public Records Act. In this column, we explain both systems, how they compare, what information is requestable and where to start if you want to make your own request. The Freedom of Information Act was passed by Congress in 1966. It est...
“Better Together.” That’s the message shared by NorthWestern Energy (NWE) and Black Hills Corp. in a joint application (www.psc.mt.gov, Regulated Utilities/Electronic Filings/search Docket Number 2025.10.078) submitted today to the Montana Public Service Commission seeking regulatory approval for a merger between the two companies. The merger will combine the strengths of both companies, resulting in an organization with greater scale, financial stability, and operational expertise. It is designed to create a stronger, more resilient energ...
On Saturday, October 18th, Lower Rader Creek Road outside of Whitehall was targeted by trespassers and burglars. Some may have seen Whitehall resident Judy Chadwick’s Facebook report on her “interesting” afternoon after coming home from Butte. Chadwick’s property was the site of one of the invasions, where two of the trespassers were apprehended. The Whitehall Ledger requested information on the home invasions from Jefferson County Sheriff Tom Grimsrud. Grimsrud explained that a burglary occurred on Lower Rader Creek, involving one residen...

Risotto is a versatile dish that can be prepared with a wide range of ingredients. That versatility makes risotto a particularly useful option to consider when hosting loved ones during the often hectic holiday season. Because risotto can be made with just about any add-ins, hosts won't have to worry about coming home empty-handed during a last-minute trip to the grocery store. With that in mind, hosts can look to this recipe for "Risotto With Sweet Potatoes, Peas and Green Beans" from...
GEORGIA, I have a question, Would it be so wrong of me if I went on vacation without my boyfriend? First, let me explain. I (22F) want to go on vacation with my boyfriend (21M), but he keeps refusing to go anywhere with me until he gets a car. Weekends away? Nope! Abroad? Nope! His car comes first. He says it's getting too cold and his bike will only take him so far. But seriously? My sister went on vacation with her boyfriend of only four months, and my boyfriend of almost three years won’t go with me because he doesn’t have “play money...

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, otherwise known as gentiles (those outside of Judaism), cautions against being mediocre. We must keep in mind the context of the first-century church and its blending of cultures. For previous centuries, the Jewish people considered themselves “the people of God,” but with the accomplished work of the resurrected Jesus and the expansion of his church, nations were being grafted into God’s plan of salvation. Jesus came for the entire world. Especially for Jewish leaders, it brought about a decline for this mi...
