    EMILIE FERN, Digital Loft|Jun 29, 2022

Montana ranks as the fourth least affordable state in the US, with a 2.78% difference between the average wage and cost of living in the state. The study, carried out by careers board Lensa, analysed the affordability gap in states around the US, comparing the cost of living to the average wage to reveal the percentage difference. The study also looked into grocery costs, housing prices, the cost of utilities and transportation costs to assess each state's affordability. You can view the full...

  • This Month in Montana History: June

    RAE BRUCE, Jefferson County Museum|Jun 29, 2022

JUNE June 5, 1901 (121 years ago): The Montana School for the Deaf and Dumb in Boulder honors its first graduates, Lena Flesher and Blaine Hurst. At the time, the school was referred to as the Montana Deaf and Dumb Asylum, reflecting accurate terminology of the time, but by our standards, it is more accurate to call it by its later name of a school. Here, blind students learned various manual industries and deaf students learned lip-reading, in addition to standard academics. June 11, 1880 (142...

  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 6/25/1997

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 29, 2022

June 25, 1997 The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) and Montana Rail Link (MRL) were discussing possible arrangements that would lead to MRL operating freight trains over the trackage west of Whitehall over Homestake Pass. Both BNSF and MRL officials confirmed that negotiations were taking place, but it remained unclear if the negotiations would produce a sale of the track from BNSF to MRL, a lease agreement, or any agreement at all. A Pasco, Washington resident was fined for damaging a rock formation at Lewis & Clark Caverns....

  • Between the Stacks: 6/29/2022

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Jun 29, 2022

The Summer Feeding Program will serve Tuesday through Thursday that week as our lunch providers will also be closed on the fourth. Children wishing to have lunch with us that week will need to come to the library as there is no 21st Century program from July 4-7. I had the opportunity to attend the Belfer National Conference for Educators on the Holocaust this week. The...

  • How Do You You-Know-What in the Woods?

MOLLY ABSOLON, Writers on the Range|Jun 29, 2022

Poop talk makes everybody fidget and giggle uncomfortably. We like our poop to disappear. We want shiny white porcelain toilets and privacy. But how do you cope when you’re in the woods behind a tree? When I took my first course at the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming, years ago, the preferred method of waste disposal was bringing a trowel to dig a six-inch cat hole, a practice still the norm for many backcountry travelers today. There was even a how-to guide by Kathleen Meyer, published in 1992, titled bluntly, How to S...

  • Stay Safe in Your Summer Travels

    JANET KENNY, Vision Zero|Jun 29, 2022

As residents and visitors head out to explore Montana, MDT is urging travelers to remember the serious nature of driving and join the commitment to Vision Zero – zero deaths and zero serious injuries on Montana roadways. Memorial Day to Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” due to increased traffic deaths nationwide. At other times of the year, the nation often travels less – either by choice or limiting factors such as season or weather conditions, and travelers stay closer to home and use increased caution while driving. Ho...

  • Motorcycle Safety Tips for Summer Travel in Montana

    SHEILA COZZIE, Vision Zero|Jun 29, 2022

Montana’s scenic views make it an ideal place for motorcyclists to “hit the open road” when warm weather arrives and it is important to remember that we all share Montana’s roadways and safe behaviors like observing the speed limit, staying alert and only driving sober can mean the difference between a memorable summer ride and the tragedy of life lost on our roads. Preliminary numbers for 2021 indicate there were 25 motorcycle fatalities in Montana, representing almost 12% of the total fatalities for the year. Of those fatalities, 16 were un...

  • Lane Filtering Legal in Montana

    Jun 29, 2022

Did you know? Lane filtering for motorcycles is legal in Montana, per the passage of SB9 by the Montana State Legislature in October 2021. • Cottage Industries - Montana Style: Momma Lou's Fine Furniture

    MARTA VARELA, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 29, 2022

Not unlike others, Sandie Metcalf came into herself as an artist late in life, after she retired. It was then, painting on furniture in her Montana Cowgirl Ranchy style, that she attracted clients to her unique furniture pieces. After 40 years of not painting she discovered that she did have talent – quite a bit of it. Though she grew up thinking she'd like to be an artist, growing up on a ranch between two small towns in central Montana and attending a tiny school, left her unprepared for M...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Watermelon Wedge Steakhouse Salad

    Jun 29, 2022

Steakhouse fans eagerly anticipate digging into the savory cuts of sizzling beef waiters serve up. The precursor to that portion of the meal is often a wedge salad, which offers a crisp complement to the richness of the steak. Wedge salads are traditionally made with iceberg lettuce and drizzled with a flavorful dressing and often blue cheese. However, there are no set rules when it comes to wedge salads. With this recipe for Watermelon Wedge Steakhouse Salad, courtesy of the National...

  • Creating Fiction from History -

    Jun 29, 2022

This photo would have been a somewhat familiar scene in 1942 Kansas. However, this was not Kansas, though it was 1942. On the small New Jersey farmstead of Don and Lois Hottinger, the harvest was better than usual. The spring rains (not too much)and the summer heat (not too hot) had worked together to provide Lois and Don with the biggest and best harvest they’d seen with their own eyes. Lois had heard tell of her great-grandparents, the Oglethorpes, bringing in over 50 bushels per acre. That h...

  • Naked Eye Events in the Night Sky

    JOE WITHERSPOON, Cottontail Observatory|Jun 22, 2022

All of the planets will be up in the night sky from the 16th of June at 4:35 AM through the 27th of June at 4:40 AM. When all the planets rise they will create an arc across the Eastern sky from 91 degrees on the 16th to 107 degrees on the 27th. The last time this happened was about 100 years ago and won’t happen again until 2041. On the 24th the planets will be visited by the waning crescent Moon halfway between Venus and Mars. The hardest planet to spot is Mercury because it stays low on the horizon and has a low magnitude. However, on the 2...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: June Part II

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jun 22, 2022

In 1896, just like today, people were looking forward to the official start of summer. Nationally, headlines included the fire that destroyed Hope, Idaho; the first session of the 53rd Congress concluded with only 50 members present and fighting between members from Texas and California; a building collapse in San Francisco kills five. Locally, flooding is a concern. The following are taken as written from the June 19 and 26, 1896 editions of the Jefferson Valley Zephyr. The accompanying photo...

June 18, 1997 Whitehall small business owner Bill Baycroft and Whitehall resident Chad Murphy - a warden for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks - were appointed and sworn in as new town council members during the regular Whitehall Town Council meeting on June 16. The Jefferson County Economic Task Force planned to expand, become more aggressive, and looked at the potential of modifying its organizational structure. The Task Force, created in 1995, was funded through a metal mines tax and was designed to find approaches to improve...

  • Midwives Bring More Healthcare Options to the Women of Southwest Montana

    MCKAYLA HAACK, St. James Healthcare|Jun 22, 2022

Babies are born every day. In fact, 249 were born in Butte at St. James Healthcare just last year. Over 200 births and over 200 different birth stories. Even twins have slight variances in their entrances. Every mother has a birth story to share, but before they ever begin the labor process, a lot of thought, planning, and preparations go into that very moment. Different women want different things and sometimes her baby, her body, and her circumstances can impact the way her birth story takes shape. Having options is important, and now, the...
