One of the greatest things about being in a library for many years is meeting some amazing people. I just got off the phone with Kyle Groves, the magician visiting the Whitehall Community Library, and he is excited about coming here next Wednesday, July 16th, at 10:30 AM. I remember when he was assisting his father, Mr. E, while children laughed, clapped, and were amazed at everything they saw. Now, Kyle is entertaining a whole new group of young readers and spreading the message that reading is...

Celebrate! Celebrate! Diane Ward ensured that the Whitehall Garden Club (WGC) celebrated the 250th birthday of our country, as well as the retirement of Glenna Waltee, the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs' State Treasurer, a role she had performed admirably for 15 years. Thank you, Glenna, for your dedication and love of our beautiful state of Montana and everything "gardens!" The brunch table was filled with red, white, and blue delicious breads, deviled eggs, fresh fruit, and a pitcher (or...

This photo was found in the pages of a book donated to the Whitehall Community Library several months ago. Montana law requires the Commission to pass regulations that will decrease wolf numbers t...

Even as summer winds down, there is still plenty of time to reap the rewards of backyard gardens and warm-weather entertaining. Refreshing salads are favored at such gatherings, and the interesting pairing of peaches and tomatoes makes the most of these fruits when they're at their peak. Sweet and savory flavors combine in this recipe for Peachy Tomato Salad courtesy of The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook (Rockridge University Press). This delicious side pairs best with grilled fare. INGREDIENTS: 2...
The American Red Cross urges all donors to give blood now to keep the blood supply strong this summer. Type O blood products are most needed on hospital shelves – especially in the face of summer challenges that can quickly cause blood and platelet reserves to drop. In addition to summer fun and holidays, severe summer weather can have a sudden impact on the ability to collect blood and platelets. Scheduling and keeping donation appointments are crucial this month to ensure blood products are constantly available in the weeks to come for all p...
NorthWestern Energy has received reports of scammers targeting their Montana customers, falsely claiming payments haven’t been processed and demanding immediate payment to avoid disconnection. This scam has been reported in Whitehall as well. Please take precautions: • Protect yourself. Do not engage with these scammers. • Remember, NorthWestern Energy will NEVER demand immediate payment. NorthWestern Energy sends multiple disconnection notices before shutting off service and offers several bill payment options....
Many people have been stopping by the historic fishpond in the center of Whitehall to see the trout that are normally there by the Memorial Day weekend. However, this summer the pond is dry and the fish are missing. Why? The Town of Whitehall’s decision to chlorinate the water has made it impossible to stock the pond this summer unless a fresh water source can be provided for the fish. Trout cannot tolerate any level of chlorine. The Whitehall Rotary Club has been looking into various options to make stocking the pond a possibility for this s...

Construction is now substantially complete on the Whitehall Urban Pavement Preservation Project. Crews plan to return in mid-July to apply seal and cover (chip seal) over the newly paved roadway, weather and other factors permitting. After chip seal is applied, the surface will cure for approximately a month before crews return to install permanent roadway markings. There are no longer any length or width restrictions through the area. However, short-term lane closures may occur during chip...

Happy Independence Day! The Whitehall Community Library will be closed July 4th and 5th, but will be open regular hours the rest of the week surrounding the holiday. The book drop is always open if you need to return items, or have company coming, and want to clean out the house. I am personally sorting fabric before my daughter comes this month, so she has a place to sleep. There will also be no lunches on the 3rd and 4th of July, as the cooks in Butte are taking a mini-holiday. These ladies co...

The clustered stems, expanding root system, milky white sap, bright green flowers encased in a yellow-green bract, and narrow leaves are characteristics of one of Montana's notorious noxious weeds, leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula). This species, like many other noxious weeds, is an Eurasian native species. It was most likely introduced to North America via contaminated ship ballasts, and the earliest recorded presence in North America dates back to 1827. This herbaceous perennial is a threatening...
This is one of a series of articles focusing on estate and legacy planning. Authors are Kaleena Miller, Madison-Jefferson County Extension Agent, kaleena.miller1@montana.edu and Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension Family Economics Specialist, marsha.goetting@montana.edu. When I visited Bryce Canyon National Park recently, the shared paths were crowded with electric motorcycles. They say they are e-bikes: If they can rip uphill at 20 miles per hour without pedaling, I think of them as motorcycles. E-bikes can be class 1, 2, or 3. Class 1 provides assistance when the pedals are turned. Class 2 has a throttle that can propel the bike without pedaling. Both have a top speed of 20 mph. Class 3 bikes, also pedal-assisted, have a maximum speed of 28 mph. Only class 1 and 3 are allowed in national parks. Friends with...

Being mindful of one's diet is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Certain foods, and particularly many desserts, are not exactly synonymous with healthy eating. Thankfully, many chefs and home cooks experiment with different ingredients to make sweets a little bit less indulgent. Take, for example, chocolate mousse, which can be delicious, but a tad heavy when loaded with dairy. However, Vegan Chocolate Mousse is made with avocado at the base. That's notable because avocados contain...

June 1925 was a lot less violent than it was back in 1899. Still, there was plenty of bad weather and other bad news. Perhaps humor was the main item in short supply in the Jefferson Valley News that month, but several good examples were found. The editor must have been in a more solemn mood. National headlines were mostly moved to the back pages of the paper. Some of the top included the Amundsen-Ellsworth flight to the North Pole; the Teapot Dome scandal and who was indicted; and the upcoming...
