  • Creating Fiction from history: 1/12/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Jan 12, 2022

The year was 1918. The Armistice had just been signed and it was Frannie's birthday, her 18th, to be exact. Frannie, or more correctly, Francoise de Bordeaux, was born in the relatively small community known as Lemonweir Mills, on November the 11th, in the year 1900. Being one of the very few French inhabitants of that part of the territory, Frannie was proud of her heritage. Less than 150 years earlier, of course, her ancestors had been rousted from these shores. Her family had been among the...

  • How a Small Town Got Its Child Care Center

    KEITH HAMMONDS, The Boulder Monitor|Jan 12, 2022

In the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 16, a massive haul truck inched into Boulder carrying a 70-foot-long building. Crews steered the structure off Main Street at the L&P Grocery, then down Monroe Street for a few blocks before turning onto West Fourth Avenue and settling, around 6 a.m., behind Boulder Elementary School. Boulder had its child care center. The building's midnight run, from the Jim Darcy Elementary School north of Helena, took six hours. Really, though, it capped a yearlong journey that...

  • Montana Park of the Week: Makoshika State Park

    Jan 12, 2022

The name Makoshika (Ma-ko’-shi-ka) is a variant spelling of a Lakota phrase meaning ‘bad land’ or ‘bad earth.’ Today, as Montana’s largest state park, the badlands of Makoshika are set aside for visitors to see and enjoy. In addition to the pine and juniper studded badland formations, the park also houses the fossil remains of such dinosaurs as Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops. A newly remodeled visitor center (with a gift shop) at the park entrance houses a Triceratops skull and other badland interpretive displays. The park includes an...

  • A New Predator Stalks the West

PEPPER TRAIL, Writers on the Range|Jan 12, 2022

The grizzly bear. The wolf. The cougar. These magnificent creatures, apex predators, how can we not admire them? People cross the world for the opportunity to see one in the wilds of Yellowstone or Alaska. There, we view them from a distance, free to indulge our awe in safety. It has been a long time since Americans lived in fear of wild beasts. But now that fear has returned. Fear felt not just in the woods, but also in cities and towns: Paradise, California; Talent, Oregon; and now in suburban Superior and Louisville in Colorado’s Boulder C...

  • Creating Fiction from History: 1/5/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Jan 5, 2022

Barbara Jo Stafford, or Barbie as she was commonly known, was an only child. The circumstances of her emergence into this world were quite miraculous; some might even say magical and mysterious. Jo Ann and Jacob, Barbie's parents, had been trying for some time to have a child, but with no luck. Having exhausted all the standard, doctor-approved means, the Staffords decided to try some rather unconventional ones. A friend of a friend of a friend told Jo Ann, over a quilt one Tuesday morning on a...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: January 1896

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jan 5, 2022

There was plenty to celebrate at the beginning of 1896 and 1922 even with winter still keeping people close to the woodstove. Whitehall was rebuilding after a series of serious fires during early 1895 and it had survived the "greatest depression ever known in the United States..." At the start of 1895, there were 20 businesses and professionals in town. At the start of 1896, that had grown to more than 32 and the Zephyr listed details on 60 new buildings in town, all built during the previous...

An EAS involves expanding the local calling area to include nearby exchanges such as Butte. In Whitehall’s exchange, phone customers pay long-distance rates for calls into the Butte exchange. The EAS would come with a cost increase for all affected customers. Options under review would increase Whitehall’s rates by an amount between $2.10 to $10.19 dep...

LORRAINE CARLI, National Fire Protection Assoc.|Jan 5, 2022

Nearly one-third (30 percent) of U.S. home fires involving Christmas trees occur in January. With this post-holiday fire hazard in mind, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) strongly encourages everyone to keep the festive memories and remove the hazards by disposing of Christmas trees promptly after the holiday season. “As much as we all enjoy the look and feel of Christmas trees in our homes, they’re large combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreac...
