    Kristine Erinn, Whitehall Ledger|Apr 28, 2021

The Jefferson Valley Hospice, a wonderful organization based in Whitehall, has been active in our community since March of 1983. It all started with a hospice training course where thirty-two people signed up, which was supplied by the Highlands Office and was the initial contact for the start of the operation. The state licensed the group in 1984. Out of the 32 original trainees, fifteen remain on board. Some of the original members included: Jackie Uivary, Dr. Sacry, Duane Scott, Brooke Connor...

  • Jeffco Health Department Update: 4/28/2021

Pam Hanna RN, Jefferson County Public Health Supervisor|Apr 28, 2021

Vaccination is very much on my mind. Jefferson County Health has been actively administering COVID-19 vaccinations for the past three and a half months. We have participated in training to store, handle and administer the vaccines. Scheduled appointments, provided education, set up clinics and administered doses. However, this is not the only vaccination effort I have been thinking about. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused barriers for some individuals in receiving preventative health care....

  • Connecting Point: Keeping Your Balance in a Country at Odds

    Bill Lanes|Apr 28, 2021

Are you tired of political bantering? It is incredibly complex. But, does it need to be? Every issue seems to be politicized, medicine, immigration, the environment, social justice, even sports. During the 2021 NCAA tournament, commentator Charles Barkley said, “I think most white and black people are great. I really believe that in my heart. But I think our system is set up where our politicians, whether they are Republican or Democrat, are designed to make us not like each other so they can keep their grasp of money and power. They divide and...

  • Whitehall Elementary Principal Check-in: 4/28/2021

    Apr 28, 2021

Greetings, Trojan Community! Do I dare say that after the recent rains we are now finally done with winter and snow? I know 215 elementary students who are almost unanimously ready for the sun to start shining on a regular basis. Though we all know the weather can sometimes put us into a lethargic mood, I think it is very important to put into perspective where we have been in the past year and, perhaps more importantly, where we are planning to go in the next. A year ago this weekend, I was edi...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: April 1921

    Arlene Weber, Jefferson Valley Museum|Apr 28, 2021

April 1921 Part 2: The following is taken as written in April editions of the 1895 Whitehall Zephyr. A petition has been circulated in Boulder and extensively signed, praying for a direct mail service between here and the county seat. As it is now it takes two days to send a letter 35 miles by railroad. A circus procession, if a good one, is often an amusing sight, but never half so interesting as the procession of ore teams to be seen daily on our streets from the Aurora, Broadway and High...

  • Ledger: Looking Back 25 Years - April 25, 1996

    Catherine Ellerton, Whitehall Ledger|Apr 28, 2021

How often does a barbershop quartet stroll through Whitehall these days? Whitehall area residents will have a chance to enjoy the four-part harmonies at an April 27 concert while also raising money for the local school music program. “The Chord Rustlers,” a group of 30 barbershop quartet singers from Bozeman, will present “Stepping Out with a Song” along with members of the Whitehall High School Concert Choir on Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m. “The Chord Rustlers” will present a variety of music from Western cowboy songs to Southern ballads. • Recipe of the Week: Ratatouille

    Apr 28, 2021

Vegetables are an important component of a nutritious diet because they are full of vitamins and minerals. According to the online medical resource Healthline, vegetables also are loaded with antioxidants and other plant compounds that help fight free radicals that damage cells. Vegetable serving sizes typically range from 1/2 cup to 1 cup. The Mayo Clinic and other health organizations recommend three to four servings of vegetables per day. One way to ensure that vegetables are a primary part...

  • This Week's "Change That Up" Tip...Take Action

    Apr 28, 2021

When you have a goal -- whether it’s starting a business, getting in better shape or traveling the world -- it’s easy to look at someone who’s already successful in that domain and then trying to reverse engineer their strategy. While that can be useful, one thing that you have to realize is that the habits and strategies that successful people are using today are probably not the same ones they were using when they began their journey. What is optimal for them right now isn’t necessarily needed for you to get started. There is a differe...

  • Name to a Face: Pamala Bowed - The Ice Cream Lady

    Kristine Erinn|Apr 21, 2021

Pamala (pronounced Paw-Maul-Uhh) Bowen was born in Blackfoot Idaho to hardworking parents. She was born a high-functioning autistic child but she has never let anything stop her. Her family moved to Idaho Falls and lived there throughout her school years. When she turned thirteen she became terribly ill. She found out when she was fourteen that she had cancer. She went through emergency surgery and appreciated the world more. She joined her high school cheer squad and was well-regarded by her pe...

  • We Are HER Announces 2021 Retreat; Looking for Support

Stevie Croisant, We are HER Founder|Apr 21, 2021

Like many businesses and organizations, we had to pivot when COVID hit last year. Through our organization We Are HER, several volunteers and I had planned a five-day retreat in Paradise Valley for 15 survivors to attend. The point of the retreat? To help survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault find healing through connection, story sharing, and education about trauma. One week before we selected the 15 survivors who would be travelling to Montana to attend our retreat, the news of the...

  • Jeffco Health Department Update: 4/21/2021

Pam Hanna RN, Jefferson County Public Health Supervisor|Apr 21, 2021

Without volunteers to rely on, it is hard for me to imagine how Jefferson County Health Department would have fulfilled its many responsibilities this year. We have been assisted by mask makers, contact tracers, telephone answers and paper filers. Volunteers have worked from home, come to our office and responded to our vaccination clinics. They have entered data, directed traffic and administered vaccinations. Their service to us and our residents has made a positive impact on our community....

  • Connecting Point: A Reminder

    Bill Lanes|Apr 21, 2021

It’s quite common for people to say, “I’m a good person. I do good things for others. I volunteer a lot.” I’ve heard a version of the following a time or two, “I love God, go to church and say my prayers.” Another candid conversation for refreshment of great value for all American adults concerns the subject of salvation. While it might be somewhat true “good people” exist, we need to be careful about concluding that “being good” somehow equates to salvation. This is a heady subject, and it is part of my writing and preaching for the next coupl...

  • Whitehall Superintendent Check-in: 4/21/2021

    Hannah Nieskens, Whitehall Schools Superintendent|Apr 21, 2021

Teacher appreciation week is the first week of May, and this year more than ever, I am thankful for the excellent staff I work with. I have been an educator for 21 years, and the past 13 months, beyond a doubt, were the most challenging of my career. I know the teachers felt the brunt of the changes, even more than I did. When schools closed abruptly last March, teachers were obliged to speedily reinvent their craft to supply students with digital instruction. The Whitehall teachers rose to the...
