Many years ago the Whitehall Ledger had a Volunteer of the Week spotlight, which featured the good-doings of one local person. This person could have done something helpful just the week prior, or have a voluminous history of volunteerism throughout town and our area. In 2023 the Whitehall Ledger wants to resinstate this spotlight but needs your help. Who do you know that has done something out of the goodness of their heart, without being asked, or is just always there to lend a helping hand? This could be someone few people know or someone...

It’s time to start voting! Visit the Ledger’s Facebook photo album entitled 2022 Photos of the Week (https://bit.ly/3UibZIt) and start voting! The Whitehall Sustainability Committee (WSC), with oversight from Golden Sunlight Mine, was formed in 2022 to help Golden Sunlight rank community projects in the Whitehall area by a local advisory group. In 2022 the WSC funded $135,000 worth of projects in the form of the upcoming playground on Legion Avenue and the upcoming daycare facility next to the Whitehall Schools. The project funding cycle is once again open and accepting project proposals until February 1, 2023. Think big, think the legacy of Golden Sunlight and what they hope to...
It’s the beginning of a new adventure for Bloom Health and Wellness, as they move the shop from the Borden’s side building to Resolutions Fitness’ space at 23 West Legion at the beginning of December. Bloom will expand their services in the new space with bioacoustic offerings. It’s the end of an era as well for The Whitehall Ledger, which w...
Two Whitehall entities requested the use of Whitehall Town property at the monthly Town Council meeting, held at the Town Hall on Monday, November 14. “Informal talks” had been had with each group with employees of the Town and with the Mayor. Jeannie Ferriss, Whitehall Community Library Librarian, requested the use of the old Whitehall Town Hall, located on Whitehall Street next to the library, in order to expand the library itself. In turn, the Town would then need to move the Whitehall Court office to the Town Hall, requiring them to per...

We all know the old saying: it takes a village to raise a child. However, that old adage can be applied to so many aspects of life. Most recently I've realized it takes a village to put on a community event. From Frontier Days to Fall Festival, to Shakespeare in the Parks to Screams Come True, there are so many people behind the scenes that don't receive the proper credit for everything they've done to make the event a success. Without that proper credit, we lose volunteers who make the event...
The Whitehall School Board met on Tuesday, November 1 and continued their discussion as to whether a four-day school week should be considered for the district. Whitehall Superintendent Hannah Nieskens presented information from the Three Forks school district, which recently converted to a condensed week and is most like our district, Nieskens said. Pros noted from the Three Forks research included: attraction for new teacher recruitment and retention, creates additional 30 minutes in the daily schedule for longer labs, etc., provides more...

The event donates a portion of its...
Jefferson County Commissioner candidates Mary Janacaro-Hensleigh and Dan Hagerty, both from Whitehall, are looking forward to Election Day on November 8th, both admitting it will be nice once the race for the Commissioner seat is complete. “Honestly, I’m tired of political campaigns in general,” Hensleigh said with a laugh. Hensleigh is currently the town of Whitehall’s mayor, and has been for the last 10 years; she will release the position to Town Council Chair Roy Milligan should she be elected as County Commissioner. “It should be very s...

November 8 is Election Day and, if you haven't already cast your ballot, the two Jefferson County Sheriff/Coroner candidates would like to request your vote on one of their behalf. However, while one candidate is more reserved and a bit better known on the South end of Jefferson County, and the other is more outgoing and known in the North, both stand for the same thing: the Montana Constitution and keeping the peace to uphold its laws. Both Captain and Detective Chad Cross, a resident of...

Nearly ten years after a four-day school week was originally discussed, the topic was once again broached at the October 4th meeting of the Whitehall School Board. Whitehall Superintendent Hannah Nieskens questioned the Board as to what they have heard in the community and whether or not to take the change into consideration once more, especially now that Three Forks and Boulder have moved to a four-day week. “I’ve had at least eight calls asking us to look into it,” Elementary principal Kurtis Koenig said. Nieskens said that the requests she h...

As the owner of the Whitehall Ledger, each week I have to make decisions on what is published. As a member of the media, I strive to be non-biased in my reporting and to never show my own personal opinions unless in my editorial. Several times I’ve been questioned about why I chose to print an opinion piece that was divisive or leaned one way or another. I’ve been called a “raging liberal” as well as a “right-wing conservative.” One extreme to the other, it seems. Why do I choose to print articles such as that on page 11? Do I agree with...
The Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC) voted 6-2 on Wednesday, September 21 to purchase the Rogers Building (3 Whitetail Rd), in which to house the Western Legacy Center (WLC). In June the JLDC had pulled out of negotiations to purchase the building, with JLDC Executive Director Eric Seidensticker stating that “the Western Legacy Center’s business plan is not in the best interest of JLDC at this time.” However, since June, JLDC had reconsidered their position and at the September meeting voted again, with 6 in agreement, 2 against,...
