The new signs in town herald the twenty-first season of the Jefferson Valley Museum. Since 1996 the historical building has shared the history of this area with the many visitors from the 50 States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Within these walls of one of the oldest buildings in Whitehall is held the story of the town, the valley and the people. These buildings and grounds were "rescued" by volunteers and are still lovingly maintained by volunteers. Even though the season is from Memorial Day...

While a final decision has yet to be made, it appears local residents will be heading to the polls to let their voices be heard about the creation of the Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District. The Jefferson County Commissioners will make the decision whether or not to put it on the ballot at their May 30 meeting in Boulder. In the past few months, there has certainly been a lot of debate about the possible district, and it has been a passionate issue among many local residents. There has also been a lot of confusion about the protest forms...
I've got to admit that last Wednesday I was really starting to get nervous. Usually during the winter months I always know there is a chance that the newspaper might be delayed a few hours or possibly a day because of weather, but that isn't something that crossed my mind once the month of May rolled around. While the weather in downtown Whitehall was raining, it was snowing fiercely with just a small climb in elevation. Just moments after Melissa went to pickup the Ledger from the printer in...
RaeCille "Sis" Dawson, 72, of Boulder, received a call on May 12, 2017 with an offer to paint the most incredible landscape view imaginable. She was embraced by the loving arms of her family and in the comfort of her home as the call was accepted. Her journey began in Butte on April 23, 1945, born to Weston & Isabella Strasser. Prior to graduating Beaverhead County High School in 1963, she dominated beauty pageants and maintained the same beauty and grace as she continued on to earn a degree in...

Nonie Sacry told me once “If you have too much to do today, be thankful, and pray for those who have nothing to do.” Good advice and these past few weeks, I should have been praying a whole lot!!! The Special Election on Thurs. will be an interesting day. I know, my life isn’t any busier than most this time of year - I just suffer from lack of focus. Every year the Cardwell students (or as they are often called in years gone by, scholars), have a Declamation Contest. This year it was held ‘on its own’ without being the end of the year, etc...
It was an evening of glitz and glamour with a bit of tap and ballet and hand stands, splits, back bends and somersaults thrown in. It was the "Dancing Through the Decades" Dance and Tumbling Recital held at the Star Theatre on Thursday, May 18th. The Christensen School of Dance presented their students in a high energy program that had the audience entranced. The majority of the young dancers not only took on the intricate steps of ballet but took on the challenge of tap dancing. If that wasn't...
The Library will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday May 29. In response to the young patron who asked me why we were closed on that day, here is the answer. Memorial Day came out of the horrific casualties the United States suffered on both sides during the Civil War. On May 5, 1868, General John Logan, a Union general, declared there would be a yearly observance to honor those who had died in the Civil War. The day was originally entitled Decoration Day and only celebrated in the northern states. The Southern states kept their own form of...
A tremendous high school tennis career for Whitehall's Monica Sepulveda came to an end last week at the Class B-C State Tournament in Missoula. Competing in what head coach Kerry Sacry was one of the best fields he has ever seen at state, Sepulveda was eliminated from competition after dropping her first two matches. Sacry said after finishing fourth at the Divisional Tournament, Sepulveda had to play against the top seed from the other division. She fell in her first match 6-1, 6-2 to Ellie Ber...

Hi Folks, We held last week’s meeting at Bordon’s in Whitehall. We approved the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan for Jefferson County. DES Coordinator, Doug Dodge has done a lot of work on this and has involved folks from all over the County. We held the final Public Hearing before we decide whether to put the creation of the Ambulance District on the ballot later this year. If we do decide to go forward, Clerk and recorder, Bonnie Ramey will open a 145 day filing period for folks who may want to run for the Trustee positions for the District. Bonn...
