FIRST TIME EVER: Whitehall Town Councilman and pastor Bill Lanes participated in Saturday's Demolition Derby in Dillon for their opening summer event. Lanes has crashed nearly 87 vehicles in over 125 rounds, but had never been rolled. On Saturday, due to a good hit and soft arena sand, he found himself on his lid in the arena. Thankfully he only suffered a bruised shoulder!...

THE GNOMES ARE COMING TO WHITEHALL, arriving at various locations on June 16 just in time for the Enchanted Forest Faire. Keep an eye or two open for this incredible invasion. Watch where they stop! The Whitehall Chamber has hidden several gnomes for a Gnome Roam throughout town - find all the gnomes in these locations (including the golden gnome), take a selfie with them,...

Dear Editor, I would like to make a comment about the way people in town drive. Somebody in a red truck pulled out to make a left turn right in front of me today at the Conoco station intersection and if I hadn't slammed on my brakes, I would have T-boned him right in the driver's door. I have had a big dump truck pull out right in front of me coming out of the side street by Family Dollar without even stopping at the stop sign. I always drive 25 mph as posted in town and there is always...

JUNE, PART I All was not quiet in Montana back in June of 1897. A sheepherder had been killed by a group of renegade Cheyenne and seven more deaths followed. Ranchers were arming themselves and fear was rampant in eastern Montana. In western Montana, bets were being placed at the racetrack in Anaconda where nearly 150 horses were listed. In the eastern United States, new appointments were being made for federal government offices; a Christian mission in China was attacked and all were feared...
JUNE 10, 1998 Whitehall would get a brand-new water tank built and operational by August 1, and the Whitehall Town Council was assured of full warranties and full compliance with water tank specifications as called for in the Whitehall water improvement project. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) public information officer Dennis Unsworth said the department timetable called for between two or three weeks of rock removal before Highway 2 would be reopened for travel. Unsworth estimated the cost of the road clearing to be between...

On an almost "Spring" day, the WGC met for their June meeting at Borden's conference room. The Social Half-Hour was hosted by Kathy Hatch and Maureen Dawson (and if this reporter wasn't so focused on eating, she would have remembered to take a picture!). The morning treats were just that...a real treat... including a delicious egg bake, fresh fruit salad, and a scrumptious homemade rhubarb cake, albeit the rhubarb was from Butte, none available yet in Whitehall. What a wonderfully fresh and...

What is a firewall, and do I need one? In today's increasingly interconnected world, safeguarding your digital assets and personal information is paramount. One vital tool in the realm of cybersecurity is a firewall. At its core, a firewall acts as a barrier between your computer or network and the vast expanse of the internet. It monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic, determining what data can pass through and what should be blocked. Essentially, a firewall serves as a gate...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will kick off the biennial hunting season-setting process earlier to allow for more public engagement and greater transparency. Public involvement will begin in June and end in November. In the past, public involvement happened primarily in December and January. FWP will conduct scoping meetings around the state from June 15 to July 15. FWP staff will look to hunters to provide broad input on regulation changes they’d like to see. Staff will also look for feedback on a few specific proposals. These scoping meeting...
A hunter killed a grizzly bear in self-defense last week in the Madison Range southeast of Ennis. The person was hunting black bears in a remote parcel of private land in the backcountry on June 5 when he was charged by a grizzly bear. The hunter shot and killed the bear with a pistol and was not injured. The hunter notified Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks the same day. Officials from FWP, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest conducted a field investigation with help from the landowner and confirmed the...

This lovely little Clarks Nutcracker stopped by Jill Honer's home just the other day to say hello. Honer sent this picture to the Ledger along with a little history on the little bird. The Clarks Nutcracker was the second bird listed in Lewis and Clark's journal. Therefore, it was named after William Clark. William Clark first observed it in 1805 along the banks of the Salmon River, a tributary of the Columbia River. Its scientific name literally means "nutcracker of the Columbia." Lewis...
Hiking and camping season is upon us. People come from every state just to camp and hike in Montana. Our woods are bountiful and amazing. But when you go hiking and camping you are plagued by bloodsuckers called ticks. Sometimes you get one or two ticks on you and sometimes even more. I found ticks pairs very well with a peanut butter sandwich and are high in protein. The tricky part of this recipe is catching the ticks. Worst, you could get Lyme disease. You could hike thru the woods and wait for them to latch on to you, but this method is slo...
Georgia, I have a question, We are concerned our only son isn’t having children. Every time we bring it up with him, he seems to have a new excuse. Recently when we tried to discuss this with our daughter-in-law directly, she said her high-powered career would be severely impacted if she didn’t plan child-bearing carefully because she doesn’t get paid parental leave at her workplace. We tried to encourage her by saying that she doesn’t even need to work since our son is very successful and we have considerable means. This seems to have offende...

Other longings are harmful, even destructive to ourselves or others as warned against in the Bible. Author and speaker, Ben Bennett states “Failure to address legitimate longings is often behind our unhealthy thoughts and destructive behaviors.” Ben founded the Resolution Movement- a global movement helping people overcome hurts and struggles to thrive in life, check out this initiative at res...
