Rocky Mountain Development Council, Inc. (Rocky) will have supplemental foods available for Whitehall area seniors on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 11 AM to 12 PM. Pick-up is at the Whitehall Senior Center. There is no charge for the food. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a program where seniors can receive regular allocations of free food every other month. State and local health officials are reporting the first West Nile Virus (WNV) detection of the year in mosquitoes sampled from Blaine County. No humans or horses have tested positive for WNV yet this season. Infected mosquitoes can transmit WNV when they bite, and the increased risk of WNV transmission to humans and horses is expected to continue through October – or as long as mosquitoes are active in the state. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is advising anglers that portions of the Beaverhead River, Bitterroot River, and the entire Jefferson River are closed to all fishing daily from 2 PM to midnight, effective Wednesday, July 19. A spectacular picture recently appeared on social media of a young lady in Arizona. She was poised on the edge of a cliff emblazoned with sunset colors. Our summer is quickly moving along. The toadflax insects are finished. All the adults have laid eggs, and most have died of old age. We are in the middle of collecting leafy spurge flea beetles (Aphthona spp.) and are doing well with numbers. Next week we hope to start collecting spotted knapweed root boring weevils for the many requests we are receiving. The Jefferson Valley Museum will be offering their annual historic bus tour during Frontier Days, July 28th and 29th. There are three tour times on Friday (1:30 PM, 3:30 PM, and 5:30 PM) and one on Saturday (2 PM). Each is limited to a maximum of 10 people. 4 Paws Rescue near Cardwell, Montana is having a raffle to help our rescue pets. These pets are either abandoned or have been released by owners.
