St. Patrick's Day began as an opportunity to honor St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who was credited with bringing Christianity to this island nation. Through the years, St. Patrick's Day has transformed into a celebration of Irish culture as well as a day for fun and fanfare. Of course, no celebration would be complete without delicious food. Although corned beef may not be the most authentic representation of Irish cuisine, it certainly has become synonymous with St. Patrick's Day....

MARCH, Part I Like March 2023, in March 1897 the U. S. Congress was in session and discussing controversial issues. In Montana, the Gallatin valley...

The Whitehall Garden Club meeting was everything 'green' including the beautifully laden table created and designed by Laura Horn and Glenna Waltee. Delicious "Pots Of Gold" egg bites, fresh green grapes, green veggies, green lime juice, and two types of traditional Irish soda bread were enjoyed by all. With the luck of the Irish, scrumptious Blarney Stones were also served, but we believe 'tis the wee leprechauns that took off with them to be hidden in the shamrocks....because they disappeared...

Five Montana Tech seniors have spent much of the past year working through a senior design project where they test whether or not waste mine tailings from the Yankee Doodle Tailings Pond could be used in a growing environmentally friendly industry. "Green" concrete reduces the amount of cement needed by substituting other materials. In 2022 it was estimated that 7-8% of global carbon dioxide emissions originated from the production of cement. In the students' experiment, they created concrete...

The 40 days (excluding Sundays) that comprise the Lenten season traditionally require abstaining from meats and other rich foods on key days during this sacred time on the Christian calendar. The faithful move to more humble foods as they choose to be reverent and focus on Jesus's sacrifices. Simple meals of vegetables and fish tend to be staples in Christian households this time of year. When seafood is not the typical first choice for families, it could be challenging to come up with new ways...

Nolan is considered a leading filmmaker of the 21st century, as well as a director who pushes the boundaries of what can be done in live action, from the semi-truck flip in The Dark Knight to the Tesseract scene in Interstellar. Bringing a child into the world is also hoped to be a beautiful, healthy experience, counting the tiny fingers and toes and enjoying baby snuggles. However, sometimes this beautiful experience becomes a heart-wrenching test of strength, both for the baby and the parents. Unfortunately, this is exactly what Liam, Samara, and baby Doran are currently going through. Due to Samara’s previous health issues, the couple and their doctors believed the chances of conceiving were very slim. However, on S...

Recent and current cold temperatures across the state have resulted in higher-than-expected energy bills for many Montana residents. Increased utility company operating expenses for some utilities, including local property tax increases which went into effect January 1, may have also contributed to a recent surge in the prices customers are seeing on their bills. To reduce energy costs, the Montana Public Service Commission encourages consumers to take steps to conserve energy and protect their homes against the cold. The following energy-savin...

Digital technology has caused the biggest changes to teenage life in many decades. Typical American teenagers spend about half of their waking hours on their smartphones. They are on the phones when they are alone at home and when they are hanging out with friends. When I compare my own teenage years in the 1980s with those of my parents in the 1950s and ’60s, I realize how much more rapidly habits have changed in the past 15 years than in the previous 50 years. My teenage experiences and those of my parents weren’t all that different. We tal...
