  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: 9/14/2022

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Sep 14, 2022

Was it a change in the weather or something else? By September 1896, law and order in the valley seemed to have withered in the summer heat. The rest of the state was not much better. Constable Thomas Coombs of Butte was attacked by five "roughs" and nearly beaten to death when he tried to serve an arrest warrant on one of the men; Mrs. Rose Heimbach of South Butte was thrown in jail for attacking Mrs. Susie Snelling with vitriol after Rose said, "You can have my husband, but first take this,...

  • Cottage Industries - Montana Style: Liz Schramm's Montana Naturals

    MARTA VARELA, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 14, 2022

It should come as no surprise that Liz Schramm knows her bath and beauty products, having started making them twice and both times when it seemed the best course of action for her. The first time was more than 30 years ago in Las Vegas and more recently, here in Whitehall six years ago. Shortly after her daughter was born, Liz and her husband John realized she had skin issues and couldn't use any soaps, even baby soaps, or laundry detergent. With no Internet, Liz turned to her grandmother who...

The school has been working towards the removal of the unrepairable courts for several years, though with the acrylic in the refuse, it has been difficult to find somewhere to...

  • Creating Fiction from History: 9/14/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Sep 14, 2022

Harriet Peregrin Smith, Hattie for short, possibly pictured here, was born to a mixed couple in Georgia. Her parents, Reginald and Darlene Smith, had been approved for a marriage license after special consideration, even though the ban against interracial marriage remained in effect at the time. One may wonder at the strings that must have been pulled. Fortunately for Hattie, the strings were pulled and thus her birth was legitimized! Hattie was possibly three-months-old when this photograph was...
