When Brian and Corinna Ervin moved to Montana from Sacramento eight years ago, they retired their street bikes for horses and a more relaxed lifestyle, at the same time, paving the way for a new artisan business. After a horse ride with a friend, Brian returned home thinking how cool it would be to tell people he'd built his own saddle. Later, he turned that desire into CBE Leathers, saddlery, and custom-crafted leather goods. After the horse ride, in 2018, Corinna found a school that would...
The clothing is in, the poster displays are almost done, and the hard-working teenagers of the Holocaust Project are ready to share a year of learning with the public. Next Thursday, April 28, at 7 PM, the Library will host the Rescuers/Survivors Fair with our teenagers representing a real-life survivor or rescuer from the Holocaust. Each patron who comes to see this amazing enactment of courage, survival, heartbreak, and selflessness will receive a passport to the past as they visit different centers. Each teen will share the life of a person...

April 17, 1997 Casino Night, the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department annual fundraiser, was under investigation by the Montana Department of Justice regarding a complaint filed by Holly Stratton of Whitehall alleging improper actions during Casino Night. The complaint was divided into two parts: 1) apparently involved alleged fraud associated with one dealer, one table, and one group of players; and 2) possible permit, procedural and administrative violations by the department. Other legal questions included the legality of blackjack and...
DID YOU KNOW: • Trees conserve energy in the summer and save you money. • Properly planted trees can cut your air-conditioning costs by 15-35%. • Trees help clear the air. Trees produce the oxygen we breathe and reduce air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and retaining particulates. • Trees bring songbirds close by. Birdsong will fill the air as trees provide nesting sites, food, and cover for countless species. • Trees around your home can increase their value by up to 15% or more. Studies of comparable houses wi...
Carlie Jessop, Elementary Counselor: Happy Spring everyone! Hope you all enjoyed a much neededbreak and are ready to close out another fantastic school year! In the next month or so, we will be wrapping up learning about different tools we have for our Zones of Regulation, so be sure to ask your kiddo what tools they have in their toolbox! The kinders recently watched a read-aloud book called, What If Everybody Did That? This story helped them think about how their actions affect those around them. My hope is that they will think about what...

I’m disgusted with American journalism. It’s boring. I blame editors for assigning uninteresting stories, and people interviewed for being evasive. So, for a modest fee, I provide journalists with stories that could have happened and quotes that should have been uttered. Contact me at CustomFacts.org. None of the above is true. But if it got your attention, recall that in most forms of journalism, lies are frowned upon. Not so with wildlife photojournalism. Liars dominate. This galls me because I work with so many honest wildlife pho...
After deer and elk permits were drawn Thursday, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks uncovered an error in the drawing process affecting less than three percent of applications across the state in 10 hunting districts. This year the Fish and Wildlife Commission changed several elk hunting districts to “first and only choice” for applications, meaning if hunters want to hunt any of these districts, they forfeit the option to list a second or third choice on their application. Due to an error in the current licensing system regarding “first and only...

Rattlesnake is one of the easiest meats to acquire. You can normally find them on the road during the summer. Rattlesnakes love warm places, because they are cold-blooded, just like my ex-wife. There are only two ways to get rattlesnakes, one is to find them dead on the road, and the other is to shoot them. If you acquire a snake on the road, throw a handful of rocks at it, to double check if the snake is alive. No one wants a snake to jump at them, any more than a spider over your head. As soon as you can tell it is dead, put your boot on its...

My name is James Reiff, I am writing to introduce myself to those of you in the community who do not know me. I have been part of the Whitehall and Cardwell communities my entire life. My wife, Logan, and I both attended K-12 in Whitehall. Our two kids are current Whitehall students. After graduating from Whitehall High, I attended Boise State University where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with minors in Political Science, Biology, and Chemistry. I received my Doctorate of Law...
Dear Jo, I am dating a beautiful woman. She is the whole package: beautiful, intelligent, fun. We share so many interests and every time we are together, it is better than the last time. Why am I writing? Well, the other day was a warm and sunny one. We went out for lunch and a walk. She wore sandals...her feet were so bad. She has scaly, yellow toenails. Her feet look like I could carve a pound of dead skin off each one. Her toenails look like weapons! That is all bad enough, but it gets worse. She had thick, grayscales between her toes! What...

April 1896 & 1922 Part 1 In April 1896, people were eagerly awaiting the actual start of spring weather. Things in national headlines were not too different than now – murder-suicides, kidnapping plots for a prominent person, political bantering. The Battleship Iowa was launched from the Cramps’ shipyard. The following is local news, as written in the April 3rd and 10th editions of the Whitehall Zephyr. Mining: Another small shipment of ore has been made from the Golden Valley; the last came within a few cents of netting $120 per ton; it is...

The sun is shining, the temperature is Montana warm and the aroma of freshly made maple bars is wafting through the conference room. Of course, we follow our noses to the "social hour" table laden with the most scrumptious homemade and thickly on-the-spot-frosted maple bars! Mary Ann Carey and Maureen Dawson were the providers of the sweet fare, but Lori Carey from Boulder was the creator! Not to miss mentioning, there also was a beautiful fresh fruit salad, and a display of living flowers...

There was such a positive response to the Teen Mental Health First Aid Training that we are going to offer it again in May. The eight-hour training will be from 8 AM to 5 PM on Friday, May 6 at the Library. Lunch and snacks will be provided and the training is free to any adult who has contact with teenagers or children. It covers different mental health issues, how to identify them, and what to do next. There are also sections on suicide and addiction. With all of the pressures young people...

The Whitehall Rotary Club presented their latest Wheelchair Award to Bill Pullman in recognition of his many service projects to the community and the valley. These include the film premier that provided financial support to the Jefferson Valley Museum, the new park Main Street Green, and his involvement with the new Gold Junction Presents. A donation was made in Mr. Pullman's honor to The Wheelchair Foundation from money donated by patrons of the Whitehall KFC/A&W. The Foundation then provides...
Spring fever is in the air, with quarter four well underway. We have 34 middle school track students, 40 high school track students, and 12 students playing golf. We are proud of our students for getting involved, knowing the sunshine and activity is great for them! Additionally, the 21st Century Grant Middle School program continues to keep more middle school students involved with a seven-week series called Battle Bots. Students are using LEGO bricks to create robots with motors and gears that will navigate using a remote control. They are...
April 10, 1997 March snowstorms and temperatures varied across the state adding snow to many already well-above-average snowpack levels, according to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Jefferson River drainage was at 136 percent of average snowpack. The ranks of volunteers assisting with “Spring Clean Whitehall” expanded with civic groups and local businesses donating time, money, and effort to the cleanup project. In support of both the Whitehall cleanup and Arbor Day, Golden Sunlight Mine provided 450 ponderosa pine seed...
