One of the greatest things about networking with other libraries at conventions is sharing resources. I discovered that a larger library has a huge selection of STEM kits they are willing to share with the Whitehall Community Library for programming. I also found a great source for wildlife programs and speakers. Sharing saves the library hundreds of dollars in programming costs, not to mention that we don't have the space to store fifty or sixty boxes. We can't wait to open the list and start...

Chapter One: Me and New Friends Hi, my name is Brooke. I just moved from Missouri to West Virginia, which is a very haunted state, or at least I heard. I don't believe in that kind of stuff. Anyways my house is beautiful. And my room is huge! It's probably my imagination, but I've been seeing shadows lurking in the corners of my room. Today is my first day of school. Maybe if I make some friends, they'll show me around. When I got to school, they announced me as a new student. The teacher...
Several species of ticks are native to Montana, and they are a common sight for runners, hikers and campers in the spring and summer months. But for the first time, specialists in Montana have identified a blacklegged tick in the state, a species that can carry and transmit Lyme disease. Rocky Mountain wood ticks and American dog ticks are commonly seen in Montana, said Marni Rolston, a diagnostician in MSU Extension’s Schutter Diagnostic Lab in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology. Rolston identified the specimen, which was f...

Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of a masa dough and fillings, then steamed in a corn husk or banana leaves. While tamales certainly are delicious, the time-consuming nature of making them may compel some to avoid preparing them at home. This recipe for Chicken Tamale Pie offers the flavors of tamales in a single-pan dish. Try it, courtesy of 30-Minute Meal Prep (Sourcebooks) by Robin Miller. DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Coat a 9-inch pie plate or oven-safe skillet...

Fashions have changed, towns have become cities, and cities are metropolitan areas, but some things are not much different now than they were 100 years ago. The following news items are taken as written in March 1925 editions of the Jefferson Valley News. Outside of Montana, headlines include the Federal Probation Act, which became law and allowed probation as an option for a federal prison sentence. Calvin Coolidge was inaugurated for a second time, with the event broadcast on the radio for the...

I have been writing this column for almost nine years and normally write 50 columns a year. That is a lot of words to share with our patrons! It always touches my heart when I miss a week and patrons come in see if I am alright or ask other staff where I am. That is one of the wonderful things about living in a small town where everyone knows everyone...

A decision was made to buy two new doors for the ambulance and police garage. According to information released this week from the Local Government Center at the University...

Let me introduce myself! I'm Brandi, the assistant Librarian here at the Whitehall Community Library. I have been asked to write this week's column; so I thought I would take this opportunity to share my passion here at the library. It is my goal to help each and every child grow to be a lifelong learner. I love seeing that "light bulb" moment when a child finally gets it - the wheels start turning and a thousand why questions follow. They ask such amazing questions I have to research and learn...

Try this version courtesy of 300 Best Stir-Fry Recipes (Robert Rose) by Nancie McDermott. INGREDIENTS: 4 ounces dry rice noodles 1/4 cup chicken stock or...

In March 1899, there was plenty of news to report from around the world and here in the valley. Fighting was ongoing in the Philippines, and a front-page story made it clear that the government there was not fond of the U. S. forces. Our troops in Havana, Cuba, were fighting a typhoid fever outbreak that was not helped by the primitive sewage systems. A young man with the Northern Pacific in Helena chose suicide as the way to get out of his marriage. Montana Governor Smith vetoed a bill that wou...
