Winter sports season is in full swing with fresh snow on the slopes, but is your body ready? As an avid skier and snowboarder, I know firsthand how much fun these activities can be—but I also know the toll they can take on muscles and joints. The right conditioning routine can help keep us on the hill and out of the emergency room. As an active participant in winter sports, I’m always looking for ways to improve my own fitness and educate others about the importance of maintaining strength throughout the winter. The demands of winter spo...
Imagine a million-acre wilderness: Mountain peaks. Rushing rivers. Bears and wolves. Now imagine a city the size of, say, Chicago. In my corner of Montana every summer, those two things merge. Montana is home to Glacier National Park, and 30 years ago, the park had about a million visitors a year. Nowadays, the park attracts more than 3 million people a year. It's like a major city teleported to the spine of the Rockies. Those visitors have needs-food, restrooms, parking lots, and trails. They deserve to be safe. They expect to have fun. That's...

Fortunately for lemon bar lovers, this recipe for Lemon Bars from The Complete IBS Diet Plan (Rockridge Press) by Amanda Foote, RD, offers a sweet and sour offering with delici...

These were just some questions the eighth graders asked for their English assignment. Each student interviewed a person of their choice; nine of the...

Recently, I have been thinking about how certain stories have enriched my life. Some stories have helped me develop empathy. Others have given me a base for meaningful traditions. Many have provided me with a sense of belonging or purpose. I would like to share a few of these lived experiences that have connected me to the past and helped shape my values. Glimpses into my grandparents' lives through the stories they imparted left a lasting impression on me. My paternal grandmother grew up in a...

A buzz of children zips around their grandma, their energy is overflowing and infectious. It's clear they love it at her house. They are over there three times a week. Their grandma, Meg Bristol, gets up and down to help them find snacks, water or the toys they want, then she pulls them onto her lap for a story. The movements it takes to cater to the beelines that circle her, are basic - bending, walking, going up stairs - but they are done with intention and gratitude. "The last year and a half...

At least five elk calves were killed in mid-January in the Florence area of the Bitterroot Valley due to ingestion of toxic ornamental plants. The calves were found by homeowners in the area between Jan. 15 and 23. Necropsies conducted on two of the calves revealed high quantities of toxic Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) in their stomachs, and an examination of properties in the area revealed several of the plants that had been browsed. The homeowner voluntarily removed the plants. Ja...

Despite its name, chili can warm anyone up quickly. Chili is often spicy, which means the dish gives off warmth in a multi-layered approach. This recipe for "Totally Excellent Chili" from "Clueless in the Kitchen" (Firefly) by Evelyn Raab is spicy but not too hot and thin enough to be eaten with a spoon but not...
