March 3rd marked the halfway point of the 68th Legislative session. We heard hundreds of bills in committee and on the House floor. The last week was filled with long hours and high emotion as legislators fought for their legislative priorities. Here are a few takeaways from our session thus far: Key pieces of legislation have passed both chambers and will be sent to the Governor. These include a property tax rebate of $1000 to residential property owners paid out in 2024 and 2025, and an...

A new bill being considered by Montana lawmakers would permanently restrict the State’s ability to enhance public access, protect critical wildlife habitat, and support working farms and ranches. HB 462 seeks to redistribute how recreational cannabis tax revenue is spent in Montana. Over the next biennium, it would strip over $30 million in voter-approved revenue from the Habitat Montana Program and permanently block the program from tapping those funds again. “In its current form, this bill would limit the state’s long-term capability to pr...

Republicans’ number one goal this legislative session has been to provide financial relief to Montanans struggling with Joe Biden’s inflation and the high cost of living. An early, priority package of eight pieces of legislation is aimed at delivering on that mission. Together, these bills combine to immediately put money in Montanans’ pockets, provide long-term tax relief, and reduce taxpayer obligations into the future. House Bills 192 and 222 return over $700 million of Montana’s historic budget surplus directly to taxpayers in the form of...

Thank you for reaching out to me regarding my thoughts on Montana House Bill No. 328. House Bill 328, as it reads, states: ‘An act providing for increased transparency and accountability in government by requiring certain government entities to record their public meetings in audio and video format; requiring those entities to publish the audio and video recordings to the government website within 1 business day after the public meeting, etc.’ When I ran for my current position as Jefferson County Commissioner, I both heard and personally exp...

"Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!" is a famous line turned into a cliché from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz used to express fear. In the 2020s, the fear of "Lions and Tigers and Bears" has been replaced with the fear of "climate change and anti-vaxxers and Article V of the US Constitution," which are strange bedfellows indeed. Oh my! There has been the same banter going on back and forth around a resolution that has been trying to get passed through our legislature since 2015 to add Montana...

The 2023 legislative session has begun. The House of Representatives is off to a productive start for the people of Montana. Many of the bills heard thus far are part of Governor Gianforte’s “Red Tape Relief Initiative” to delete laws no longer used and also to streamline how business is accomplished within state agencies. Legislative committees have had hearings on important bills. The first one was HR-1. This defined how we as legislators conduct the business of the House for the people of Mo...

I wanted to take a moment to update everyone on some of what has been happening at the County lately. We are winding down the distribution of the $2.4 million we were allocated in American Rescue Plan Act money, most commonly referred to as ARPA money. We made our best effort to spread this money around the County to help folks recover from the adverse effects of the Covid pandemic. The County is working on applying for a Federal Access Grant to improve a deteriorating section of the Cataract Cr...
