JUNE 20, 1996 Stopping traffic is what utility workers did when they reached the Pipestone Creek Bridge just east of Whitehall. The job foreman said they are installing 17 miles of fiber optic line from the U.S. West building in Whitehall to the Cardwell area. Easements for in town still needed to be worked out, the foreman said. He said the work would probably take until late July or early August. It’s finally summer in the valleys of southwest Montana, but it’s still spring or even late winter up in the mountains, the Forest Service reminds area residents. Melting snow and rain have left soils in the higher country saturated, and the Forest Service and leaders of off-road vehicle groups are asking the public for help to prevent damaging this basic natural resource. Debbie Austin, Forest Supervisor, Beaverhead/Deerlodge National Forest urged everyone going into the mountains to take some simple precautions. “First, avoid meadows, espec...

JUNE 6, 1996 Montana may be the “Last of the Big Time Splendors” and Butte may be the “Can-Do City” but how does one identify Jefferson County? That’s exactly the question people often ask, according to the Jefferson County Economic Development Task Force. And that’s exactly the question the group hopes to answer through the “Jefferson County Official Slogan Contest.” The purpose of the contest is to develop a slogan line that identifies a common, unique characteristic about Jefferson County in order to promote the county for tourism and busine...

MAY 16, 1996: The history it represents took 100 years to create, but the Whitehall Centennial Quilt took only about a decade. While that may seem like a long time to make one quilt, the reason for the delay is apparent from the intricacy of the quilt. Six years after Whitehall’s centennial, the quilt was presented to the Jefferson Valley Museum Monday to be exhibited when the museum opens May 25. Embedded in the blue of the Big Sky Country emblem is the Whitehall Centennial logo which honors the diverse lifestyles found in the Whitehall a...

MAY 2, 1996 What should Whitehall be in the year 2010? What can Whitehall residents do to guide the community in that direction and steer clear of undesirable changes? Those questions are the focus of a project called Vision 2010 which has been underway for several months and is about to result in some concrete plans. On Monday, May 6, Whitehall residents will get their first glimpse of architectural plans developed after a series of public meetings. The plans, created by Montana State University architectural students, provide visual and...

Greg and DeAndra Parks of Whitehall have been chosen by the Jefferson Valley Habitat for Humanity (JVHFH) as the second family to receive a Habitat for Humanity home. The first home, built for and with Bill and Margaret Carhuff, was completed in December. Although the announcement of their selection is great news for the Parks family, Greg and DeDe know that it means they face some hard work ahead. Every “partner” family chosen to receive a home must contribute at least 500 hours of “sweat equity” for the Humanity program. That did not come as...

Producers will have only one opportunity to enroll in the commodity-related provisions of the “Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act,” which is expected to be signed into law this week. . . . This bill, which provides farm payments through the 2002 crop year, keeps intact the general “freedom to farm” framework that has been discussed since last summer, and is not influenced by Market prices. There are several implications of this framework for producers making planting decisions. . . . Trojan Athlete of the Week is Crystal Wilkins...

WBA President Wally Madsen explained that the town council has obtained a $10,000 grant which it plans to use to repair sidewalks along Legion Avenue. Madsen said city officials wanted to find out whether the businesses wanted “plain Jane” sidewalks, patterned sidewalk s, brick sidewalks, or some other variation with/without planters. After a lengthy discussion on the funding for the project and the costs for engineering, t...

The designation, good for three years, entitles the community to be listed in promotional materials sent by the state to businesses interested in moving to Montana as well as other benefits. The promotional materials include information gathered by local residents about the services and assets of the area during a rigorous application process. The shop is seeking a manager now and will be advertising in the Ledger for 8 to 10 other employees about two weeks before the shop opens, he said. A few low-lying areas along the Jefferson River near Cardwell experienced some flo...

FEBRUARY 29, 1996 The Whitehall of 2010 should be different from the current Whitehall in some ways, but in many significant ways it should remain a lot the same, even bringing back some of the community events which were treasured in the past but have faded over the years, area residents said at a Vision 2010 meeting held Feb. 21. . . The community design team, made up of four senior architecture students and Professor Ralph Johnson, (a Montana State University community design team) plans to take the ideas they hear from the community and...

Madsen noted that two businesses are moving to new locations and WBA member and town councilman Pat Peltier said the council just approved four new business licenses. Saying that he did not see any open...

FEBRUARY 15, 1996 It looks as if it will be possible to reconstruct the Whitetail road mostly within the existing right of way, Commissioner Leonard Wortman said during Thursday’s regular county commission meeting. It may be necessary to go ten or fifteen feet outside of the existing right of way in some places, and perhaps a bit more in one area where a curve would be eased, Wortman said. But it apparently will be possible to reconstruct the road without taking up as much private land as thought earlier, he said. . . . Split Diamond Ranch o...

Topper is a deputy of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and his wife Gail is the Whitehall area dispatcher. “When things go to heck at Delmoe Lake, we give Top a call and he’s up there, even in the middle of the night,” said Jefferson District Ranger Grant Godbolt in presenting a plaque to the couple. “We get Gail up, too,” Godbolt added. . . . Jefferson County has “a real serious problem,” Gam...

The fourth annual Fiber Fest held at the Copper K Barn outside of Whitehall on July 18 and 19 got off the ground through the sheer determination of founders Kami Noyes and Betty Kujawa. Kami stated that this year had been more challenging but she felt it was worth it as she feels we all need a release from the stress of today so she went through the entire process, met the constant changes and received much support online. Finally, over 26 vendors and teachers from all over Montana and...

Are you fed up with fatigue and want your life back? This was the challenge thrown out by Bethel Wagner at her Sept. 5th workshop. Wagner who stated that she has always been interested in health related subjects, obtained her Health Coach Certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She also has received her "gut health" certification. If we are honest with ourselves we know why we are fatigued – why we fight with "brain fog." But sometimes it just takes someone to point it out to...

They came from Canada, New Zealand, Washington, Idaho, Florida, Tennessee and many towns within the Great State of Montana to learn the stories of this historic area and to catch up on the “good ole days.” It was Whitehall’s Frontier Days Celebration of 2019 and, once again, the crowds came to cheer the alumni parading down the street, to marvel at the old cars in the Rod Run, to attend the Fine Arts Show, to take part in the Ranchers Roundup and to take a Historic Tour of the area around White...
