  • Dear Editor: Climate Crisis

    DON LEPINSKY|Feb 2, 2022

Dear Editor, The Salt Lake Tribune recently published a letter to the editor by a young Republican who stated that an overwhelming majority of young, college-age Republicans are in favor of conservative leadership on climate issues. He is a proponent of legislation that will expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure and promote clean energy technologies, like carbon capture. Access this letter at https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/letters/2022/01/19/letter-young-utah/. Well of course young men and women are for mitigating the climate crisis....

  • Thought Provokers: 2/2/2022

    Feb 2, 2022

White shoes go well with everything except outside. It’s crazy to think how incredibly easy it is to ruin your life while it’s considerably harder to manage your life as it is. If you’ve ever stood up on a bus, you’ve effectively made it a 25,000 lb skateboard. History says dinosaurs laid eggs and evolution gave us chickens from dinosaurs, so logically the egg did come first and not the chicken. The fuller your phone battery is by the end of the day, the better your day was. Everyone hates being used, but no one wants to be useless. The kit...

  • Dear Jo: 2/2/2022

    Jo|Feb 2, 2022

Dear Jo, I need your thoughts about a good friend who, at the end of the month of my birthday or the first week of the next one, hits me with a birthday card. Then she says she doesn’t know my exact birth date but at least she remembers the month and, therefore, I should be thankful. Four years later, I am tempted to tell her if it’s not important enough to remember the day, then why bother? Am I wrong for feeling this way, or should I just be thankful she at least remembers the month? Sincerely, Birthday Girl Dear Birthday Girl, A little fin...

  • Register Now For Hunter Education Classes

    Feb 2, 2022

Several in-person hunter educations classes have been scheduled around the state over the next several months. While online classes are also available, there are several advantages to in-person classes, including hands-on experience, mentoring, and the opportunity for students to ask questions and hear advice from experienced hunters. “We value our hands-on classroom courses and field days, all done with the dedication of our excellent volunteer instructors,” said Wayde Cooperider, outdoor skills and safety supervisor for FWP. “We feel that...

  • Connecting Point: Toil and Time

    BILL LANES|Feb 2, 2022

The self-serving slogans “Make America Great Again” and “Build Back Better” contrast with the wisdom of the Bible’s Ecclesiastes. Most Americans find a purpose for living beyond daily living. The great poet Robert Frost said, “Most Americans are deeply spiritual,” and I agree. Today, again studying Ecclesiastes, I hope you’ll find inspiration. Solomon explores the topic of life’s purpose throughout the entirety of Ecclesiastes. The maturing Solomon found that wisdom and pleasure in and of themselves were meaningless. In the process, he exami...

  • Joseph Edward Green, 68

Late on Thursday night, January 20, 2022, our dad, Joe Green, unexpectedly passed away at Community Hospital of Anaconda, surrounded by his loving family as the snow fell softly. He was at peace. Our dad grew up on the rough and tough streets of Butte, Montana. He was born to Frank and Dorothy Green in Butte, Montana on November 12, 1953. He was the third in the line of eight siblings. • Between the Stacks: 2/2/2022

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Feb 2, 2022

Last Thursday we had a truly extraordinary program as Cindy Buscarow shared her family's Holocaust history with a full audience. There was silence as she spoke of her family's attempt to rescue her grandparents and great-grandparents, followed by their realization that they could not escape. They were fully aware of what was happening to the German Jews in 1943 and what their fate would be. Cindy shared heart-breaking letters as they said goodbye to their children and wished them the best. It wa...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: February, Part I

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Feb 2, 2022

FEBRUARY - PART I In 1896, the Sousa band was a popular feature at concerts and in February 1896 had a lot of Whitehall residents headed to Butte to listen to the Sousa military band concert. The following items are taken as written from the February 7 and 14, 1896 editions of the Whitehall Zephyr. The picture is an advertisement from the February 7th edition. Frenchy Miller recently made a batch of cream-colored soap, and after cutting it into small pieces, placed it in a cheese box near the fr...

STEVE SACRY, Whitehall Trojan Wrestling Coach|Feb 2, 2022

The Whitehall wrestling team finished their home schedule last Friday. In the mixer with Dillon and Butte High JV, Whitehall came to compete. After 22 individual matches, Whitehall ended with a 21-1 record. In wrestling, earning a pin shows complete domination over the opposing wrestler. All 21 of the Trojan victories came by pin. The evening started with Ethan Wock wrestling at 182 against Dillon. He earned a pin in less than a minute. Later in the evening he also pinned a wrestler from Butte....

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Caramelized Peanut Milk Chocolate Bark

    Feb 2, 2022

Peanut and chocolate has always been a tasty combination. The saltiness of peanuts pairs well with the sweetness of chocolate, which is why many desserts feature this combination of flavors. Cakes and cookies may be prime outlets for pairing peanuts and chocolate, but so can homemade candies, like chocolate bark. Caramelized Peanut Milk Chocolate Bark from Chocolate Obsession (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) by Michael Recchiuti and Fran Gage mixes peanut butter right into the chocolate to give it an...

  • Creating Fiction from History: 2/2/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Feb 2, 2022

Rosie, or more correctly Rosa Lynda Cabellharo, was born April 1, 1927, to Daniel and Felice Cabellharo. Proud to belong to one of the original Mexican families who inhabited the small town of Farmersburg, Iowa, Rosie was now about to turn 15. The Cabellharos were good Roman Catholics; that, coupled with their ethnicity, meant quinceanera! In a nation emerging from the greatest depression ever known, as well as still reeling from Prohibition, Farmersburg was not ready to send any of her sons to...

    Feb 2, 2022

  • Montana Park of the Week: Whitefish Lake State Park

    Feb 2, 2022

Whitefish Lake was officially recognized as a state park in 1960 but has been a water-based recreation source for thousands of years. The lake was named "Whitefish Lake" back in the 1850s but got its name from the Salish in the area, who referred to it as eplxyu, meaning "has whitefish." That fish is Prosopium williamsoni, or more commonly the Mountain Whitefish. A mature woodland is featured on this beautiful and secluded campground and beach. This park is your base camp for adventure....
